Good point Zach, but I don't think Interex's design is any deeper than the stock pipe at it's narrowest point (middle of the dog bone). Not sure about width though. Where do you think it has clearance problems? |

In the center, I haven't measured, but the stocker gets real skinny where it passes under the motor. Seems like it's not much more than an inch thick. Just went out to the garage - stocker's almost 3" thick at its thinnest. Maybe a simple can will work - have to add a skid plate so you can jack it up. Z |

That one is just a "sketch"... I do not have my 1125 on hand to make any actual measurement. But 3 inches seems like a fairly decent thickness, I do remember that it also narrows at that the thinnest point... So if one maintains the width throughout it should be ok, I believe the reason that they made it so narrow at the thinnest point is because of the rear profile, which is approximately parabolic. I think I came up with a an alternative which is easier to manufacture, the one above would require to weld the inlet coupler to the shell. I think I can change it such that one can move the inlets to the front plug. I will most certainly PM the info the Kevin. |

I'd like to see something that looks and sounds good and is square on the bottom. I want to be able to put it on the frame jack and lift it up a foot or so to work on it. Without the cute little cradle an XB needs... Z |

I will see what I can come up with... I think I have an idea for what you want, I do not thing that it will as elegant looking but it should do the trick... What are the approximate dimensions of the frame jack support? I can come up with something that will (I hope) guarantee a nice deep sound. The only problem with me coming up with design ideas is that I do not have any way of realizing them myself, perhaps I can talk to Kevin if I come up with something that appeals to a larger audience. |

Lemme see what the spacing is on the jack when I get home later today. It's warming up here - 37 now - I'll still be taking the long way home. I think it's about a foot, but then again, I thought the muffler was an inch thick... I'll check. Once I get my welder going, I'm going to try opening the muffler and modifying the exhaust for a single, large tip instead of 2 little ones. Still very interested in a good replacement. Z |

Hey Guys the spacing on my jack is 14", I am studying the exhaust and it says on the website that the front chamber is a helmholtz chamber and reduces noise abatement. The inside of this exhaust is a design that must have taken some time to come up with and is very complex, I am trying to figure out how I would build an exhaust for this bike while keeping the tq band flat, I would settle for a little louder stock exhaust, but do not want to give up low end power for top end power, I did think a turbo would fit were the front chamber is than go under the motor to a wedge shaped muffler with duel outlets one on each side. Zack on page 36 in the book you got it does say that the twin exhaust outlets produce less exhaust noise than a single outlet so I will see what happens when you do this to your bike, good luck and hope you do not run into problems. I have a mig welder but do not want to do anything that might hurt the performance so I will wait and see what you other guys figure out. Mike |

Peter - The jack's bars are a foot apart, center to center, and 2" wide.

excellent... I think we are going to need a chin fairing with this one... hah |

If the exhaust needs length to produce power then maybe a front exit system would work better while being completely under-slung. |

Not_purple_s2, That is another thought... Although I believe there are other methods of "emulating" a larger volume and pipe length. At least from speaker design, I know that by using an absorbing lining material you can successfully emulate a larger enclosure. Although the biggest difference between speakers enclosures and mufflers is that not only do you get variable pressure waves but a net flow of fluid as well... Baggermike, I have always admired the amount of attention paid to the muffler design on the Buells... That is very interesting how they used the helmholtz chamber in the front. I think I understand the logic behind it... by adding the helmholtz chamber they are making the pressure waves longer, so in the end you get a "steadier" flow with reduced amplitudes. Allowing one to make the net flow higher while meeting noise emissions. Fun stuff... I wish I knew more about exhaust systems. |

Interex did you see the inside of the exhaust, if not go on the 1125R mimi website and look at the are fuel info and click on 2 and there are three pictures one of the exhaust with like a see through portion, it is amazing how they designed the exhaust and must of took allot or R&D. Mike |

Indeed I have... every time I see it, I become delighted. Its not often that one sees that kind of care put into something that most people intend to just scrap. Its just a shame they do not make them out of stainless. Mine has already started to rust, on the front and back... (Message edited by interex2050 on February 09, 2008) |

I was thinking it should because the tips are stainless but it would cost more and they probably figured that most people who buy the bike will change it. I am thinking of painting mine, I am not sure if any aftermarket exhaust makers can make a exhaust that will produce the almost flat tq line? I would like to have it louder but do not want to screw it up, I will be watching ebay to see if I can get one down the road to see if I can modify it, I read they went with two pipes to lower the sound and was wondering if cutting it open and putting one pipe might be good? I keep looking at that exhaust and the bike and it is going to be hard for someone to out do this design. Mike |

I always liked this exhaust by Roadracing Varese for the Ducati Monster: http://tinyurl.com/9fy7b Friend of mine (and former Duc shop manager) had one on his Monster and said it was hard to tune, though... Not only that, but also that muffler would be difficult for a small manufacturer to produce; because of the stamped parts required. The hardest part about coming up with a design for the Buell is that one has to try to make it easy to manufacture. |

I would like a little bit louder exhaust but do not want to loose or give up its powerband, I like it just the way it is power every were. The front of the exhaust has a helmholtz chamber to reduce noise abatement, now if this part of the exhaust can be removed I think it would be louder without hurting performance, also they used two small pipes at the rear for less noise and this is another area to modify for louder sound without hurting performance. I am no exhaust specialist just a metal fabricator welder so I am guessing. |
