My '06 has been trouble free for a year and a half. Been one of the most reliable things I have ever owned.

I think the reason I may have had so many issues is because I tend to get the first generation or each motorcycle...
Not to mention I am unlucky when it comes to stuff going wrong.
Enjoy your bikes, do not worry I am sure they are all just fine!

I'm just really curious to know what Court said as the "life saver" solution...

The oil in my bike has been over filled and today I experienced the dead battery / bad voltage regulator (I expect) issue.

I have no intention of abandoning Buell or the 1125R, but it is quite frustrating.

I suspect buell rushing the bike into production for there 25th annerversity and is why we are having problems. Mike

Wow! That Roehr ups the HP from a V-Rod engine from 98 to 180 HP. That should get it moving pretty smartly.

But the limited production and $45 Large MSRP is not going to make a common sight on the roads.

Chameleon,
Try popping the battery on a charger... Once its more or less charged, disconnect the charger and measure the voltage across the battery terminals.
Then start the bike and measure the voltage across the terminals again.
If the voltage goes up to around 14V with the bike is running then the stator/regulator are working properly.
If the voltage is the same... in that case you will need to figure out if it is the stator or the regulator.
You can either do static or dynamic test of the stator...

Static is just measuring the resistance between the coils and ground (all should be infinite).

Dynamic is testing the AC voltage being developed by the stator while the bike is running. (I am not sure about the 1125, but typically 50-90V AC)
Just measure the voltage between all the coils (should be three in total, typically all yellow).

If the stator checks out that leaves the regulator as the problem...

In my case everything checked out fine, and indeed after charging it that one time I hav not had a problem since.

The Roehr sure is interesting... I would be curious to see one in person. Although its just a hair out of my price range.

Mike: I don't buy that... It would be huge negative PR to have recalls of the 25th anniversary bikes. Erik is not stupid and I believe he wants to put out a quality product; these are just bugs due to a new design. All new design vehicles have these issues. I knew the gamble going into this, but it's still a bit frustrating... At least the weather is crappy enough that it doesn't really boil my blood.

Interex2050: I did borrow my neighbor's charger and about 1.5 hours later was able to start it up and rode it for about 60 miles of mostly highways. I had it up to 145mph twice, but mostly cruised around 80, giving it plenty of opportunity to charge.
I monitored the voltage while charging, when just taking off and upon returning. The alternator was producing 13.8 volts at 4k rpm as I was leaving my house.
When I got home, first thing I did was get it in the garage, then turned the ignition back on in diag mode to measure the voltage.
It read 12.4 (slightly >50%) then, as soon as I turned on the fuel switch, quickly dropped down to 12.3, 12.2, 12.1 (slightly >25%). I cranked it and it started after about 2 seconds and voltage read 11.9 which is barely over dead.

It's going back to the dealer on Tuesday (they are closed Sunday & Monday) and they can sort this shit out.

I do for many reasons. It's not a slam that they rushed it. I think it's obvious the 1125R was the fastest way to bring the now ready engine to market. Using as many existing parts as possible. The fact that it was delivered with just days left on the calender from when it could have been released as a 2009 model. I know i will get flamed for this but I have no doubts in my mind working in design and marketing that the muffle was not designed to be exposed. Only the rear tip was designed to be seen, The chin spoiler/bellypan obviously did not make it in time for some unknown reason to the public. Maybe heat?

I know I will be flamed for saying that. I will only be vindicated when the subsequent models are introduced with all new matching pieces front to rear. Only then will it become unarguably obvious how rushed the 1125R design was.

I am not sure if it is true or not that they rushed it into production for there anniversary, it does make thence to me though this could be why we are having so many problems, or maybe it is because the motor is all new but built by a company that should know what works and what does not work. I do think there 25 anniversary is big, and what better way to celebrate it than with a new model, a new beginning of a new era, and a new direction that the company is going, so this is why I think that it could be possible that they did this, but I am just thinking it might be true with the problems half of us are having. I also think they planned for the bike to be ready for this but all of you know that when you plan things sometimes it takes allot longer than planned. Mike

I wouldn't fault Rotax unless metal parts give out. DDFI is all Buell, and the electrical system would not be a Rotax design either.

My guess is that the engine will be robust. So far the issues relate to things bolted to the powerplant, not the internals.

Yeah, if you can't get enough power, that is in the engine.

If it is the voltage regulator, isn't that outside of the Rotax design?

I don't know that there are that many problems. Several people here have reported issues BUT I would expect that on Badweb we would hear about every single issue that happens.

There seems to be some sort of voltage issue but how many of the bikes so far delivered have had a problem? We don't really know do we? The internet is a pretty bad source for decent statistics.

Was this bike rushed? I would say less than many previous Buells. I suspect the bike we are seeing is what they wanted as the first bike. Erik has been banging the STREET bike drum for years now so.

I don't think the frame deal is a defect. First I have looked at several bikes and have never noticed it but mainly the because the part would be judged first on how well it functions and by all reports it is a better frame the XB frame. Second it is lighter than the previous frame. In third and last place is appearance. If there is some very minor cosmetic issue it will be trumped by the first two.

I would also think that Buell will be working with the supplier to make it better but then we will hear that Buell should give all the guys with older frames new ones, sorta like the updated belt;)

BaggerMike:

How would this be different from any other year? Each Home Coming I have been too Erik spends a great deal of time wandering the parking lots looking at the Buelligans creativity and signing anything that will stand still long enough.

I remember him signing a friends S2 swingarm. Somewhere I have a picture of Erik almost laying down to sign the swingarm. I guess he would prefer a body part that was little easier to sign (although he did not hesistate for a moment to get down and dirty in the parking lot) ;+}.

Yes spartan but the voltage regulator was replaced so it is the battery or the charging system being weak. I know I am using the bike for touring and the bike is not desighned for this so I know I am asking allot, I will test everything then if it all checks out I will try a new battery and see if that is the problem. The V R can hurt the battery and if so might not be able to test for a problem so better to be safe than sorry. Mike

Chameleon,
Those voltages are really really low for a running bike, and the fact that it is discharging with the bike running is also a bad sign.
So it appears as though there is either a problem with the VR or stator.
But just make sure all the connections are secure between all the components in the charging system.
Good luck

P.S.
For the static diagnostic of the stator I forgot to add one more step... Also test the resistances between the individual coils, all the values should be above zero and close to one another.

Mike:
Buell puts on one heck of a party. They also bend over backwards to make sure that the attendees are take care of 110%. There are many stories how parts just appeared to fix whatever ails whomever was in attendance.

They also enlisted the services of the Dealers around the area to make sure anything that was built in East Troy, was taken care of right-away.

>>>Buell puts on one heck of a party.

And has since the days when we only dreamed of getting 10 people there. . .

This year will be the best year yet. It's kinda cool that they were not going to have one last year, hoping to rathole the budget for the 25th. The enthusiasm of Buell owners played a role in changing that decision and Buell was rewarded with a record turn out.

There will also be a chance, this year, to meet some people who seldom/never are seen on the internet but play a huge role in the world of Buell.

Some of us will be gathering in Europe in the weeks prior to Homecoming and will also be toting some pretty interesting Buellthusiasts back to East Troy.

Plan on relaxing, making many new friends, tying faces to names and just plain having a great time.

The time has flown since the days when every Buell owner in the USA could show and we still couldn't get a group rate. . . .

Very cool stuff indeed.

Interex I have the test equipment but no manual and hope to get one so I can test everything on the electical system and know then what needs to be done to make the bike power my gear, but for the winter I have a blast and it heats the gear better than both bikes the ulysses and the 1125R and want to know why but all I am conserned with is running my high and low beams with my heated jacket liner and gloves that is an extra 120 watts but could cut that to 90 watts by getting a 60 watt liner and give the 90 watt to my son, next winter I am setting up the blast with studded 90/10 dirt street tires and use that bike for the winter. I just got to get a better seat for it, out of all the bikes I have had which is allot the blast has the most uncomfortable seat that I have ever sat on, so that has to go and been searching ebay for a good deal. I am not sure if the service manual would specify the capabilities of the VR...
So by upgrading the stator and making use of the increased power, may overheat the VR.
I think the safest thing to do, to guarantee success, is to upgrade the VR and stator together.
Unless we can find the specs of the VR...

P.S.
Are voltage regulators no longer referred to as rectifiers?
Although rectifier was never the right term to use, but I am just used to it...

I agree and was told to run three v r and hook computer fans on them but that sounded like it would void the warranty, I will try a new battery when I get the bike back and then if the problem is not solved I will test everything and then if that checks out then I guess I need to sent the stator and voltage regulator out to this place I found I think it is listed above and they said to send them the stator and the magnet thing and they would rewind it, but with out the manual I can not do anything with out knowing the tq specs to put it back together right. I think running three voltage regulators would be rather excessive...
Unless those guys could really get three times the power out of the stator, and you can find enough things to hook up.
Actually that is a rather simple solution, adding another VR.
Then you can have completely separate circuits for your accessories and the bike.

I am sure you probably already know the following, but just in case...
Although I do not see why changing to a different battery would solve the issue though...
And here is why:
If you are drawing more current then is available after you take into account headlights/ecu/headlights/battery charging/etc;
1-If the current you want to use is slightly more, then the above the charge rate will simply be reduced.
2-If the current drawn in greater then the available current by exactly the amount the battery needs to charge the battery will simply not charge, but will not discharge either.
3-If the current draw exceeds both the "excess" current and the amount that would normally be allocated to charging the battery... The current flow will reverse from going into the battery to coming out to feed the draw. Hence you will run out of battery, while the bike is running.

Adding a higher capacity will just give you more time in situation 3

I think the key, as discussed earlier, is to make more current available.

Let me know how it turns out, I am rather curious
Best,
Peter
