I have a 2000 X1. And I am trying to figure out what years of the sportster I can use for engine fastners. Anyone know? For body panels and such any recommendations on what fastners or from whom? I know American Sport Bike has some sets but not sure if that is what you'all are using. The zinc stuff on this 16K bike is totally ratty and rusted. | ||

If you go to your dealer - and are *nice* to the parts guy - they can pull the OEM part numbers for the fasteners. Most of the listings in h-dnet display the thread pitch and length as the description. From there, just count how many you need and either get them from the nice dealer who pulled all those part numbers for you, or hit the local Fastenal store. Make sure you get the proper grade (which will be automatic at the dealer)! Chances are, any Evo sportster hardware "kit" will work just fine. That's up to 2003. Simple terms, get a kit for a four-bolt derby cover engine. For the bodyparts, you're going to need the OEM numbers, thread pitch/length, and there should be a reference sheet behind the parts counter for "X bolt equals Y stainless bolt". | ||

if you search the board there is a list of all sizes and types needed to replace your zinc coated with stainless. Just remember your zinc coated are grade 8 stainless will be grade 4 to 6 | ||

The parts books have, in the back, all part number bolts dimensions. Look up bolt 3886, and head type, length thread pitch, finish, etc. are listed. You can then skim through the size list and find different head types, stainless/zinc/etc. You can also, if you're dealer uses Partsmart, have them do a part search, enter * to do a fuzzy search, then enter the dimension needed. for example *1/4-20 will net you about 200 responses of every 1/4-20 screw HD/Buell ever used. This came in really handy when I converted all my jap-bike butter bolts to Beefy Vrod Fastener Love. In all reality though, I'm curious why the fasteners have rusted. Typically only harsh, super salty environments do that (The aluminum is usually nice 'n corroded, too). Here in the midwest (Ironically, part of the Rust Belt, for cars), fastener degradation is uncommon. I've always used HD fastener's in my other projects because they last, look good, and aren't butter soft, which you probably will find with hardware-store stainless, even in a grade 8. | ||
