I want to recoat my cam cover in blue powder coat to match my plastics. if i drain the fluids and just unbolt it and not touch anything else will I be ok? or will I be opening up a can of worms and have to retime the engine all over again?

You really should unload the cams by removing the rocker boxes.
The valve spring pressure pushing on the lifters can c0ck the cams when only one end is supported.

If you pull the cam cover, you may as well trim the bottom. Then powder coat it.

Oops, I see you have and XB, no need to cut the cover!

Yup you must unload the springs, otherwise your asking for trouble. Big trouble. Nothing that cant be fixed but why do it when your guranteed to be creating more work for yourself. If you dont have the FSM buy one and you can walk yourself through the procedure fairly simply. Hope that helps.

Al previously pointed out that you only need to remove one rocker box... you can rotate the engine to the appropriate position to unload the other.

Replace your oil pump drive gear while you are in there (unless you already have the new part, I think it showed up in the 07 models... you want the bright brass looking one).
