Garyz28's thread on helmet laws got me thinking - what type of helmet do you wear - any advantage / disadvantage to it?

NOLAN 102 target
best damn modular for the money.
it is not SNELL approved like an arai, but myself and Valentino Rossi ride differently.
it has very low wind noise for a modular (alot for a traditional full face)
no-fuss release chin strap,
great for cold or hot weather riding -controllable ventilation-
not to mention the N-COM system. it's friggin' saaaaaweeet!

Shark Rsi-

Its light weight, vents well, and doesnt have much wind noise. Its dot and ece 22-05 rated. I think its an excellent helmet for the price.

Arai Profile

DOT and Snell

Will probably look toward ECE 22.05 rated helmet next time.

After seeing that the highest impact probabilities lie on the chinbar areas, I will not be buying modular.

Like FT said the chinbar is key. That gorey motorcycle website had a helmet broken up by impact zones and the chin had the highest percentage. IHMO open face and modular, while safer than none, are not the best choice.

Remember it is a personal choice, A helmet does you no good if you leave it at home.

A helmet does you no good if you leave it at home.

The one that fits properly, is comfortable, and actually makes its way onto your head every time you ride.

I personally like the Shoei X-11.

Been sold on HJC since I tried an AC-10. Now rotate between a pair of AC-11. Will be shopping for an AC-12 later this year.

Im kinda liking the modulars. I was told at one establishment that there is no Snell approved modular helmet as the chin bar dont meet specs, even though a openfaced helmet can be Snell aproved. Is this true??

Ive read a few posts here about modulars being "not so good". Mebey Ill have to switch to a non modular. Ive got a hew-mungos cranium(XXXL)and its hard to find a good skidlid that fits. Any recommendations??

For everyday, go to market, type of riding, I really like my Nolan 102. I couldn't see very well through the drop down sun visor, so I removed it.

Since I wear glasses, getting the helmet on and off with the quick release chin strap, and opening front, makes it a lot more convenient for me on a trip with several stops.

It has a good 2 lever locking system that is designed not to open on impact. I tested the system the other day at relatively low speed, and the chin section got a bit of road rash, but it did not open, and I am still using it.

For serious sport riding, and track days, I use an Arai Profile which fits my long oval head. Getting it on and off is a bit of a chore, but it fits very well, and is very well constructed.

Arai Corsair has saved my life twice.

I still have one.

I've crash tested a couple others (KBC twice) but believe in the Arai.

(begin edit)

To clarify - the KBC were never hit as hard as the Arai.

The worst occasion in a race, I high-sided in T1 at Willow, landed on my head (probably when I got knocked out), John Lowery hit my head with front wheel on his 748 and then my bike bike landed on my head - the weight of the side case drove my face into the mud - helmet absorbed THREE impacts in that one high-side.

Yeah, I save every helmet.

Scorp 400, DOT/Snell
+ price
+ fit and finish
- noise
- clumsy shield removal

Previously I had a Schubert flip up (Pez dispenser). Nice helmet. Spendy and heavy though

Arai Corsair!!! I had the inner pads custom fit to my head and let me tell you, the helmet fits like a glove and is extremely comfortable. Not to mention all of the venting options on the helmet are easy to adjust while riding with gloves on. I'd also rate Arai's customer service as top notch! Well worth the money spent.

I have the Shoei RF-1000 (I think that is the designation, it is the middle priced one). I like it. It fits me well, is pretty quiet, and well vented which is important to me in Florida. It is my first full face in forever. I had been wearing a skid lid, but actually find the Shoei much more comfortable on trips. I do sometimes miss the open free feeling of the skid lid, but I have decided to stick with a full face. Not easy for us old Harley riders.

NOLAN 102 target
best damn modular for the money.
it is not SNELL approved

I talked the Snell rep. at the CW show last year and asked him why the Nolan was Snell approved. He wouldn't give a direct answer, he eluded to that Snell wouldn't approve modular helmets.

I have a Nolan N102, like it very much, a little warm in summer around Phoenix, but then again my Shoei and Arai are too.

picked this up at the ims in atlanta last weekend.

the wiki carbon fiber, weight is 3lbs and it's got the photochromatic face shield. no more sqinting my eyes off while riding in the sun. works great. besides the weight, there is very little turbulance and very little wind noise. the sizes run large cause i ended up getting a medium when all my other's have been alarge. did i say how great it works riding into the sun. i think it even works with the bike.

I wear a Schuberth C2 modular helmet these days. I find it a lot more quiet and comfortable than the Concept it replaced. Unfortunately, they're hard to find but it is a terrific helmet.

I also have a Nolan N100e, but I tend to wear that one more on my Beemer. Especially since it's colormatched to the K1200LT, not the XB12Ss.

After reading the article at Motorcyclist, I've decided there's no reason to spend the extra bucks on a Snell helmet. The exception to me is Arai... they're worth the money in comfort and fit even if they didn't have the Snell rating. Unfortunately they don't make a modular helmet and I've grown to love those.

Open face helmets do not meet Snell.
My understanding is that Snell would test a modular design, but none
have ever been submitted for testing.

After reading the article at Motorcyclist

There is a new article in the Feb 08 MotorCyclist talking about Snells new M2010 rating that brings them more inline with DOT and probably Euro standards (a less stiff helmet that passes fewer G's to the head).

I don't believe modular helmets meet ECE 22.05 either.

I know Givi's new helmet has interchangeable chin bars but they don't move so that they could get it to pass ECE 22.05.

Wore the Arais and Shoeis for years. Tried the Schuberth Concept and was hooked. Upgraded to the Schuberth C2 and even much better venting and chin bar locks.
After reading Motorcyclist's "Blowing the lid off" I bought a couple of Z1Rs. Light with marginal venting and cheesy interior, but with their safety rating and $89.00 entry price you don't feel bad replacing them after a season.
I'm not a brand name snob so when I get the "Oh man, why don't ya have a good helmet" question, my usual reply is "probably for the same reason you don't/can't read."

I found that the only helmet I would wear a lot is my Shoei. I had some cheaper, solid color helmets and never wore them cause they just didnt make me look cool. I spent good money on a new Shoei with some cool graphics, and I love wearing it because it feels so good, and I love showing it off.

Might sound vain and superficial to some, but its the truth in my case. Im sure Im not the only one that would be more likely to wear a helmet I thought was cool than one that wasnt.
