HELP- I'VE GOT A 98 S1 TRYING MY PATIENCE IT HAS 12000 MILES ON IT .IT IS NEWLY EQUIPPED WITH A D&D EXHAUST AND A FORCE WINDER AIR CLEANER. ITS BEEN REJETTED TO A 190 MAIN JET.THE PROBLEM IS IT BELCHES OR BACKFIRES THROUGH THE CARB WHEN I DOWNSHIFT TO A STOP OR WHEN IT TAKES OFF FROM A START .THIS OCCURS AFTER IT IS WARMED UP. AND IT DOES IT WHEN I RESTART IT AFTER A SHORT BREAK. THIS BIKE SOUNDS TOUGH AT THE STOP LIGHT BUT GETS EMBARRASING WHEN THE LIGHT TURNS GREEN .HELP PLEASE ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.THANKS RICK |

Your main jet was likely okay as it was; the 190 is probably okay now too. You likely need to upsize the pilot jet and adjust the idle air mixture screw. You say the bike belches or backfires when downshifting. Then you say it is embarrasing when the light turns green. What happens then? More backfiring? If so, then it's the pilot jet that needs upsized. Go to a 45, stock is 42. Remove EPA cover from over idle screw port and adjust screw to 2.5 turns out from full in. You should be good to go. |

What Blake said, also closely check for intake seal leaks. If they've not been changed in the last 2 years, you're way overdue. Both seals and the carb boot cost less than $12. Brad |

Make sure you have the intake seals tight as well. Rejetting my Cyclone was a no brainer. Swapped out the low jet to whatever was in the knowledge vault (45?), and backed out the fuel air screw 2.5 turns. Never had to mess with it again. Is it still a stock CV carb? They are pretty easy to take apart and *really* clean well, I had to do it on my KLR-250 twice (same carb but a little smaller). Taking the time to make every surface (important looking or not)perfectly clean resulted in a great running bike. The first time through I just cleaned what I thought was important, and it still ran badly. The second time I cleaned *everything* and then some, and it ran great. FWIW. |

If reworking the idle circuit as outlined above doesn't help, the accelerator pump may be inoperative or not squirting enough fuel. You should see a healthy squirt looking at the mouth of the carb when twisting the throttle. If not, then check for a blocked pump nozzle, torn pump diaphragm or faulty check valve. |

"If they've not been changed in the last 2 years, you're way overdue." I don't change mine unless there is an issue. But I'm lazy like that. Going on five years now with same seals. Are you sure you'd say that just two years hence is "way overdue"? |

Blake, I change mine every 2 years. I could have said that a bet better I suppose. If the seals are old and you've been moving the carb around by removing it and installing it the seals are probably going to leak. The parts are cheap, it's not worth having an intake leak. If the seals on his S1 are original, he's probably got a leak. Brad |

No problem Rick, just needling you a bit ;) Glad you got the S1 sorted out. Carb issues like that can be real annoying. So, where's your pictures? Come on! Post them up in the Cool Buell section or in the Old School vault! Brad |

My 96 has 32000 and only at about 31k did start doing the same thing you have described. Coughing backfiring through the carb usually indicates a vacuum leak or air leak on the intake side. Backfiring when letting off the gas, through the exhaust, usually indicates an air leak on the exhaust side. Try checking your O-rings on the intake manifold. . . my rear one was completely shot. hope this helps |
