This just in from the AMA! COMPETITION BULLETIN TO: All Road Race Licensed Riders and Season Credential Holders FROM: AMA Racing DATE: January 17, 2008 SUBJECT: Road Race Supplemental Rules for 1000cc – 1200cc twins in 2008 Effective immediately, 1000cc - 1200cc Twins are permitted to compete in the AMA Superbike class. For the 2008 season, 1000cc – 1200cc Twins will prescribe to a set of Supplemental Rules that will be available in the 2008 Superbike Championship Rulebook. A complete listing of the 2008 Supplemental Rules Governing 1000cc – 1200cc Twins competing in the Superbike class is now also available for view and downloads at http://www.amaproracing.com/rulebook in the Supplemental Rules section. Last I heard the Boulder Ducati team was waiting on a decision from the AMA so they could decide on whether to run FX or Superbike. They wanted to run Marty Cragill on a 1098R if they were allowed to run racing pistons, and if Ducati would provide factory support. It's not a factory effort, but it's a step in the right direction! It sure would be nice to have a twin cylinder superbike to root for again!! Schmitty | ||

Ducati already has a homolgation special. Buell does not, so no Superbike effort this year. Unless someone thinks they'd have a chance against the Yoshimura Suzukis of Spies and Mladin with a bone stock 1125r... Didn't think so... | ||

Last time I checked, no one can compete with Yoshi team. Still doesn't mean it's not worth the effort. Plus with the rules that will take effect next season, it will be a LITTLE more level of a playing field. | ||

Well last year it was DEFINITELY the "Mat and Ben Show," but the year before Honda did manage a win to upset Suzuki's apple cart. Of course, they rewarded Jake by terminating his contract this past year... | ||

This year Honda have the new Fireblade and Neil Hodgson on board, so hopefully things will be closer than the last few years. Honda have dominated WSB and most other domestic championships recently, with Suzuki struggling to compete, so sooner or later they must catch up in AMA surely? | ||

I often wonder how Mat and Ben would do in World Superbike? There are STRONG indications Ben is jumping to MotoGP next year. That oughtta be REAL interesting to see... | ||

There are STRONG indications Ben is jumping to MotoGP next year. Ben Spies admist that he should have moved to MotoGP last year instead pf playing safe in the AMA. This year he will have a few 'wild card' rides for the Suzuki GP team and this 'should' lead to a full time ride next year. However, both Chris Vermulen and Capirossi have long term contracts with Suzuki that take them into 2009 and beyond, so unless Suzuki run a 3 bike team it is unlikely that there will be a place for Spies in the official Suzuki squad next year. It is no secret that Suzuki and Kawasaki are being pressured into running satellite teams by the organisers, faced with dwindling grid sizes, and it is thought likely that Spies may fit into the 'unofficial' but factory backed Suzuki squad for 2009. Meanwhile he will have to work harder than ever to keep his number 1 plate in the AMA series this year. | ||

Why? All of the competition has got better, and Honda & Kawasaki have new bikes that in road trim are already far better than the current GSXR. In race trim I would expect them to be closer than ever (or better) than the Suzuki was this year. Suzuki only have the same bike as last year to work with, albeit with modifications and updates. There are also some good riders coming in to the Superbike class that I think will push Mat & Ben much harder than they have been used to over the last few seasons. Eric Bostrom has the R1 that should be fully sorted and of course Neil has the new Fireblade that showed a lot of promise in testing even before they started to tune it properly. | ||

I sure hope that you are correct. Last year was tiresome even if my near neighbor Ben Spies was winning the championship. Except for that last race, that was epic. Will be interesting to see what Pascal and Steve Crevier will be able to do with the 1125R in Canadian Superbike. It should be an interesting learning experience. | ||

It should be an interesting learning experience It will be very interesting to see how the 1125R goes in the Canadian series, and I hope they do really well. I don't know if it will translate into a competitive ride in the AMA, WSB or BSB Superbike series though, as the rules seem to be moving further apart each year. The Canadian series seems to be very bhp limited, which will suit teh 1125 more than the 1200 twins of course, as they won't be able to utilise their extra potential grunt. When it comes to full blown, no bhp limits WSB or AMA racing things may be different, although I'd still like to see someone try with an 1125R. |
