Treadmarks: What is the tool needed to remove the ignition switch? Looks like a torx with a pin in the center.

I have the triple clamps, and I am trying to get my plan together to do the swap later this month. Any other special parts or tools that would be handy to have for this procedure?

Hi Max,

I think it is a size 45 tamper proof torx. I had to buy on, and could not find a single unit anywhere. I found a set at autozone for about 15 bucks. When I removed mine, they were not very tight at all. I also used 3/8" poly spacers to move the cowling slightly forward then used longer ss bolts with loctite during reassembly. The 3/8" helps provide for more flexability for cable routing between the top tree and dash. It is not necessary to do this.

The steering lock will need some mods to work properly, as the 08 tree moves the lock about 1/2" forward. I have not addressed this yet, but plan to next time I am inside the cowl.

You may want to consider ROX risers to bring the bars back to the stock location. It is not necessary to do this either, but looking back on it...I am glad I did.

Treat the steering stem like an axle, and apply anti-sieze to prevent problems in the future as it is also aluminum.

Treadmarks is right, its a 45 tamper proof torx holding the ignition on. I being a cheap skate just drilled a hole in standard one I found in the tool box.

Following Treadmarks lead (Thanks !) I am in the middle of this conversion myself. I have the trees (yes trees) installed and can sure see the increase turning range already. I am going to try to deal with the steering lock pin issue now, rather then later. Thinking of maybe drilling a hole in the pin and tapping it, then using an allen head bolt to get the desired extension, or welding on a 1/2 inch stub. I am away on vacation in not-s-sunny Palm Springs now, but will get back to it next week.

I am also doing the fork springs and still need to build/buy some type of spring compressor. Any one have any suggestions here?

Hey Jim, a little confused. Why do you need to compress the fork springs? Don't you just take the tops off and compress the forks a little to grab the springs and pull them out?
Hope so-doing the same mods.

Daulyfreek, these Uly forks are cartridge style. They are put together differently then what I am use to. You will see what I mean when you get them apart.

I am seriously considering the '08 triple clamps on my '07 Uly. I see the steering/ignition lock will not work but the rest seems a no-brainer. 1/2" longer wheel base is not an issue for me either.

With everyone putting new forks on their ULY, I was just wondering if the old Uly forks would fit on my Harley Dyna Sport FXDX. Actually an entire Buell Front End might be nice.

Just for starters, could anyone tell me what the fully extended length of the Uly forks are?

This can be easily be measured by having one person lean the bike over while it is on the side stand, until the forks fully extend. Then measure from the top of the forks to the center of the axle. Easier done with two people.

Someone, and I'm struggling to recall the name, here on badweb put a Buell front end on a Sportster last year and did a stellar job of it. . . it was extremely well done.

I don't know of anyone replacing the forks, only the triple clamps.

There was someone on vtwin forum that did this as well. Wound up having to dimple the tank for clearance.

I would like to see how it goes on a softail tho! I would be interested it trying it on my night train. The HD forks pretty much blow, and their factory USD conversion is pretty lame as well.

I think it is not that uncommon on Sporty's: the size is similar to the Buell.

A local Harley rider around here did a very nice job grafting a GXSR 1000 front end on his Sporty. Looked nice.

The problem is that that length of the FXDX forks is about 3- 4 inches longer than my XB12SR forks - I think.

That is why I wondered if anyone could tell me how long the Uly forks actually are.

Apparently the Europe only Harley XR1200 has nice forks from Marzocchi, or so I was told by someone who ought to know. They would look pretty cool on my bike, wouldn't they?

i just got done with the 08 swap, i took the ignition switch apart, made a new pin about a half in longer,the steering lock works perfect. very easy fix, can't wait for some warm weather.

Markdog, what's the secret to getting the pin out of the ignition switch. Do you remove that grey circle plate on the ignition switch end, or some other rubix cubeish activity? I chickened out on prying the plate off. Didn't want to break the it.

Jon, my 06 Uly forks are 31 inches from center of axle to top of tube.

remove the two screws from the back of the switch, pry the plate off the back of the switch, pull out the square retainer and the pin is in your hand it's really simple

EG,

The difference in low speed maneuverability is tremendous. Moving the bike in the garage so much easier now as well. I have not noticed any difference in high-speed stability either. I am sure better riders may have some concerns about the change in trail or wheelbase, but I have not noticed anything that would cause me to regret the mod.

Hell, I can't believe the bike didn't come like this.

Fireman Jim and I are going to do a test on my 06 ULY. First it will go to GP Wheel and Frame and be measured on a portable CMM. Then we will change the clamps and springs. then go back and re-measure and compare the readouts and prints. The final step will be to have the bike ridden at Infineon in mid Feb. The testing will be by the Zoom Zoom Track Days Chief Instructor who has hours and hours on an AFM F4 XB

If all go as we plan we will start doing the mod at a good price to those who live within distance to bring their bike to our shop at Infineon. ... Terry

We understand it will only be a decrease in trail of approx. .5 inch. But under some conditions that could be a lot? So we are going to do test on my bike including a track test with high and low speed turns and an advanced rider. ... Terry

I got the chance to ride Terry's bike the other day. I think he said that the spring mods are done now.

My perceptions:

Less dive.

A little floppy at low speeds, tight corners pushing it a little and you need to hold it up with steering input...it seems to want to tip in on it's own. Safe, just different.

Straight line stability at speed is spot on, no weave even with a D616 front. No hands at 80 MPH and it tracks straight and true unlike my stock '06.

Hard on the gas coming up on redline in 4th and it doesn't wiggle like mine does.

Seems to brake harder than mine, probably the reduction in dive.

Less wheelie prone than mine, but that is probably the super low seat getting the center of gravity down.

I asked Terry to measure any weight transfer..my '06 is exactly 100 pounds lighter on the front on a certified scale..it would be nice to see 25 pounds or more pushed to the front.
