Bought my first Buell, a new '07 XB9R, in March after lusting for one since the early '90's. Love her. Paid for- all mine. Now it is time to start thinking about a tuber. I think the S2 series may be the best looking Buell ever, and am thinking of seriously looking for one in mid-'08. Maybe a S3 if that makes more sense. No desire for a T version. What kind of pricing should I expect for a nice, stock (is that even possible) S2? Or same for a S3? How do the S3 series compare to the S2 in regards to possible better build quality and/or reliability? Any insight would be appreciated. | ||

Allen,S-2 was the first large release from Buell but still only 1500+ made so a bit more exclusive.They were very hand built,Buell made the fiberglass in house,has lots of nice aluminum bits--oil tank,removable side plates(easy belt change) and early ones had billet triple clamps. The 1995 S-2's had carbon fiber rear fenders and lower belt guards,1996 were painted. You sit in an S-2 and on an S-3. S-2's had better front forks,also. S-3's were built with an accountant looking on so fiberglass and carbon fiber were replaced with plastic, alum oil tank and sideplates gone,etc. But I am a bit prejudiced as I have had 3 S-2's and still have my first one purchased in 1995. | ||

I currently own an S2 ('95) and S1W ('98). I lusted after the S1W since they were new and I bought my M2 back in '99. Couldn't afford one...but have one now. Great brutish bike with absolutely NO refinement whatsoever. I love it. The S2 is easily sexier, more civilized, and more useful. Mine, with 'T' saddlebags and lower fairings, has pretty much replaced my Road King as daily transportation. I've ridden S3s and liked them. A little 'diluted' compared to the S2 as far as the character and sexy bodywork goes (opinion), but a very nice bike and very well sorted out. | ||

4cammer, welcome to the addiction. I also have a XB which I sold my S1 to get. After a while I new I wanted another tuber. I was actually looking for a S3 or S3T with a carb. After riding a S3 and a S2 I decided on the S2 for a number of reasons. It seemed to fit me better and also seemed to be built better but think that is because I did not care for the S3 plastics. Since this was going to be my long distance bike I needed something that fit me and I felt comfortable on. I didn't on the S3 for some reason. Oh BTW: Like Rat I wanted a 98 S1W since they came out and finally found a basket case that I am rebuilding. Those are great bikes as well but I can not ride them near the distance I can on my S2 or XB12R. There is a S2 for sale in PA that we all have been lusting after in the classified section. My suggestion would be to go for an X1 because of the removable frame panel that allows for roadside belt replacement. Besides that, a 2001-2002 M2 would probably be the most cost-effective Buell out there. As shipped, an M2 is friendly and fun. With cams and intake and exhaust, the bear comes out  | ||

Aw,but S-2's have removable sideplates so belt swap is a breeze. | ||

Allen I have a 99 S3. Never had a S2. The thunderbolt motor in the S3 makes more power but its later in the RPM band. My S1 started as a lightning motor and loved the off idle torque. The S2 makes it easier to change the belt. But over 25K on belt before I changed it. I would avoid the 99's and lean towards the 2000 or newer. The FI when it worked on my bike was nice. Good cold weather drive ability. No enricher or reserve. Joe | ||

I was in the reverse situation until recently. I've had a S2 for a long time now and I'd been lusting for an XB. I got to ride an XB12R about a week ago and though I was thoroughly impressed with the newer bike and the price was very very nice, I didn't buy it. I love my S2 and I think I'll be happier spending the money on her. The S2 and XB9/12R are as different as night and day so ride one to make sure it's what you want. S2's are still available for a steal. Personally If I was looking for one I'd try to find one that has had a t'storm or XB head swap. The price for a "stock" S2 and a modified S2 are going to be about the same. Likewise there's not much difference in the price of a S2 vs S2T. If you find a S2T then go ahead and get it. The taller bars and dropped pegs are nice to have. And if you don't like the bags then you can take them off and sell them to me | ||

The M2 is the ultimate 1rst Buell to get. It is a blank canvas and offers the most neutral starting point depending on your tastes in what you want out of your bike. Whether you want a street brawler or a great touring bike, with a cyclone you are already halfway there. | ||

I say go with instinct on this. You want an S2 and S2's are available for a song. Get an S2. They definitely do give a different vibe than the latter tubers. Their DNA is different and you can tell. If this is what intrigues you, this is what you need to get. | ||

I've ridden both; S2 & S3... and own an S3 (& XB's). S2's vs S3's... they are quite different. For me, the S2 had a "long reach to the handlebars" and the "rear exhaust pipe next to my leg" feel. My S3 is a more upright seating position and a stronger motor. Do yourself a favor and test ride both models before deciding. I won't buy a bike unless I test ride it. Enjoy! | ||

Something you will want to look for, if it is important to you, is the signature series timing cover and documentation which the one in VA has. Tubers are the best deal in motorcycles right now. Crap - I wish a new to me bike was in the cards right now. The Mrs was really cool in getting my '07 XB9R (bought and paid for....) this year and my long gone Ninja last year. Don't have the nads to ask again. Something about the kids needing clothes and food all the time.... I will seriously be looking mid '08, hope I can find one as nice as these- and have decided on an S2. Would like to save one from the breakers and choppers. Of course everyone should ride and buy the bike that talks to them, but I'm not feeling the love for S3's? I guess there's no magic in more hp, fuel injection, aluminum swingarm, additional frame triangulation at the front engine tie bar mount, a kick stand that works and a relocated rear exhaust that melts your leg less.... I hadn't had a bike for 20 years.I spent 3 months checking every used bike website looking for something that grabbed me. Since I was buying against my wifes wishes that I not ride again, I wanted to make sure it was worth it. I came across a 2002 S3T (Grey / Orange / P.M. Wheels and fell in love)I missed it by 2 hours, the dealer had just shipped it out west that morning. I then found my bike at another dealer (H.D.) who doesn't sell Buells and didn't really want it there. I have since found out that it was a 1 owner bike, bought new by a 60 year old collector who already owned 10 bikes. 7 years old with less than 10,000 miles. Looks and runs like new. V&H exhaust, E.C.M., Pegasus covers. God what a bike. Sorry all, the S3T is in my humble opinion an outstanding ride. | ||

Scott, I couldn't agree more! My 2001 S3 has more of what I want in a bike than I could have imagined before owning it. Maybe I am just lucky but it has a full race kit and it runs great. It is reasonably fast and handles very well. I am quite tall and it fits as if custom made for me. Yes, the S2s are cool but I am very happy with my S3 and (the ultimate test) I would buy it again in a heartbeat. I don't really think you can go wrong if you buy an S1, S2, M2, or S3 as long as it is in good condition. Good luck, Dave | ||

Wow! Nice to read how much every one likes their S2 and S3 Buells. I don't think you can go wrong with any tube framed Buell. The key is to get one that has been well maintained, or has low miles. Be prepared to iron out a few issues, like leaky rockerbox gaskets, a bad throttle position sensor, leaking shock absorber, and you will be fine. You have to be willing to invest yourself in the ownership of a Buell. My 2001 S3 came to me via Craigs List a year ago - with only 2200 miles on it. I suspect the TPS was going bad, and the owner gave up on the bike. I am crazy about my S3, I even managed to find a 2002 S3T on BadWeb for my twin brother. They handle great, look awsome, have tons of character, and are more unique than European bikes. Cheers!   | ||

Why do I feel like a orphan? I've never seen so much SnM! I've loved my X1 since first cheek contact, they have there issues but that makes them tubers, Now that I've cleared up the glitches and learned Buell speak, I couln't be happier, but then again I've never ridden an S1, or an S2 or 3, or M anything! x1 is the red head step child  I love mine, got rid of the blister and the scoop and cleaned it up, a tail clean up is coming with some other changes The X1 is the final and best interation of the tube frame Buell, aluminum structure, removable side plate, usd forks, tstorm motor, FI the last of the Steel framed street fighters!  | ||

I am with olddog - love the X1. Keep in mind this is a biased opinion. You have to go with what you like. If I could find the room and money for another it w/ be the S1. Any tuber is great though I don't care for the touring models. IMO touring and Buell don't mesh. I like the tubes when they are stripped down to the bare essentials. | ||
