Has anyone got an idea on how to make these mirrors useful? I'm used to ridin' with bar ends that are crystal clear and the paranoia of not being able to distinguish vehicles behind me on the "25r" is driving me crazy! I really like the look of the intergrated LED's in them and I don't want to have to find some other blinkers that would clutter up the look . Are the Firebolt mirrors that bad also? |

I thought the mirrors were not too good when I first rode mine. But, after a few hundred miles and a bunch of fiddleing with the aiming, I finally got them to work wonderfully. Going from the round XB mirrors to the pointed 1125 mirrors was funky at first but once I got the aiming correct,,,, not bad at all. My point being, keep adjusting the mirrors, try to leave the stems in the detents, that seems to have been my biggest trouble. I at first was moving the stems to try to aim the mirrors. JJ |

I have another problem with my mirrors: they won't stay in place. I can't figure out how to tighten them, either! The wind blows them back so all I see is my jacket! |

What detents? Neither of mine seems to have a detent, and that forward/aft movement seems to be the only way to adjust anyway. Nothing else moves. |

My problem is the vibration, I can see a white or black car but.....is it Johnny Law or not. Hwy speed I can't make out diddly. |

i make my mirrors useful by making them paper weights... |

Come on up! It's in the garage, I'll be in NJ till Friday ;) Almost 400 miles on it now, needs 600 for the first service, but remember, who's ever riding when it needs service pays! |

I use small round convex mirrors to the outside of the corners of the mirrors and allows me to see in the next lanes, alltho small I find it usefull, got them at wallmart in the auto section. Mike |

I've discussed this with my salesman. He said if they don't stay at speed, that's warranty replacement. Mine stay but they buzz. If they settle soon, I'll leave them be. Otherwise I think I'll drill out the rivet and bolt it with double nuts. Should be able to make it tight, but still work like designed. I can see clearer on my Shovelhead at 80 than the 1125R. Z |

I gave up on the adjusting and just moved my head to see. |

Josh, push the glass to move the mirror in the shell. The shell doesn't move, the glass does, like a car mirror. I'm getting to where it's fairly easy to change the mirror from normal riding to full-tuck position with a flick of the thumb. Z |

Do you think the mirror buzzing is due to engine vibrations or from the wind? Does it happen at all speeds? Do the vibrations vary based on RPMs? Are they buzzy at 60-65 MPH in top gear? Do you notice handlebar or nose fairing vibrations along with the mirrors? |

I have yet to feel any bar vibration, but right at 4k I get some decent fairing vibration that causes a little freek out of the tach... |

I think I'm going to try Zac's suggestion this weekend and drill out the rivet and replace with a nut and bolt, the vibration couldn't be any worse. |

I was kinda worried about it not staying in place, one is fairly tight, the other a little looser. But after riding almost a thousand miles, they haven't moved from where I put them. Never had mirrors like this before. B_B - I'll try it this weekend on my loose mirror, if it works, cool. If it doesn't work, I don't want it to be somebody else's dime. I'm sure tightening will make it less floppy, but that's not really a problem, since the mirrors haven't moved. Not even at 75 with a 35 mph headwind. Possible sources of vibration - motor, wind or road. I'll go out to the garage and pull the mirror. Pulled the right hand mirror and mounted it on a piece of DIN rail for a handle. I peened the rivet as tight as it would get , with hammer and anvil. It's at the max you'd get with a bolt and no longer folds at all. I'll let you know tomorrow or Saturday if it helps the vibrations. Oh yeah, the turn signal still works fine. If you mess with these, take care with wire routing when you re-install, it's easy to pinch the wires. The fairing supports have wireways built in; nice touch BMC. Z |

OK - short answer - Don't bother. Zero improvement in mirror image quality. I THINK the vibration is coming thru the bike from road surface, could be wind buffeting, but certain it's not from the engine. RPM has little/no effect. It gets worse the faster I go, to a point. Doesn't really get any worse after 45-50mph. Within legal speeds. The few times I've "exceeded the limit" I wasn't looking in the mirror. The only effect from tightening the rivet is the mirror doesn't fold down. If your mirror is flopping due to wind and won't stay in position - TAKE IT IN and get it replaced. I was told from the git-go that would qualify for warranty replacement. I may buy a new mirror for the one I "modded" but for now, I'll spend money on other stuff. Z |

Hey guys I am not having any bad problems with my mirrors but added those little convex mirrors on the out side corners of the mirrors and like them allot, I can change lanes on the hyway with out turning my head, maybe they cut down the viberations that everyone is talking about? cheap at wallmart. Mike Maybe they act like a mini-dampers... so Mike, the vibes are less than when you didn't have the little mirrors on? how do they look? any pics? Makes me a little nervous not turning my head, but if the little mirrors cover your blind spot--that's great. |

do to to many head injuries I can not answer the first question. But they maybe do, like adding bar end weights, plus there is still enouph mirror left to see good, for two bucks its worth a try and they cover my blind spot really good so changing lanes it not a problem for me, I found out that turning you head while some one in front of you jams on the brakes it not good. found out that turning you head while some one in front of you jams on the brakes it not good Isn't that the truth. The worst is someone jams on the brakes, then you look to change lanes to move around them and someone IS in your blind spot. I am going to try your suggestion as soon as i can find time to visit Walmart this weekend. Just to reiterate, you put them on the outside corner of your mirrors? |

I used those little mirrors on by other bike, I not only mounted the on the mirrors but also on the Windjammer fairing. |

yes the outside corner of the mirror the pointed part, kind of wedged them in there to get them as far out as I could and maybe that helped vibes to? Mike |

Hmmmm. If that's the case, Mike, maybe some foam of the right density could be run around the mirror, to mechanically "ground" it to the shell, but with a damping material. I believe I saw some foam inside the mirror shell when I was playing with it last night. Nope, just went out and looked, nothing but air behind the mirror I have samples of over a hundred different types and densities of foam at work. I love experimenting. I've got some thin,.125" I think, butyl foam with adhesive on one side. If I can run that around the rim of the shell... I'll be back Z |

Promising I got some foam, thicker than I had in mind, around the inside of the shell. Not completely around, but at the pointy end and the round end. Looks like it might help, will test it tomorrow. If I still have vibrations, I have another idea. That gorgeous, sculpted fairing support vibrates if I bump it with the heel of my hand. The image in the mirrors looks very much like what I see on the road. I'm going to make a screw jack to brace between the mirrors. Put the system in a small amount of stress to kill the vibes. Need to find an old tie rod end and go from there. Working prototype first, pretty later. My Firebolt had good mirrors and bad lights. Loretta has great lights and buzzy mirrors. I don't like this symmetry, there IS a solution. Z |

You don't want to see the foam yet. I figure I've already buggered the right mirror. It's a mule now. ahh what the heck, OK Here's the first try at damping with foam

YESSSS My left mirror looks like the FXWGs but the one with the foam looks like my Firebolt's did. I can't read license plates but I can tell what kind of car it is. Now to clean it up and optimize it. Z |

Z: Something I have done in the past was get the mirrors adjusted and then run a nice bead of black RTV around the gap. LET IT CURE COMPLETELY. After it's cured, take an X-acto blade and make a cut all the way around the inside of the housing. Now you have a custom made elastomeric vibration doo-hicky (technical term ;+}) Neil S. |
