Dear friends, My old-design SuperTrapp broke again at the front inlet weld, only 2000 miles after the first repair. It looks like I have to find another solution as a muffler to fit my Buell race header. I've tried the D&D. Its sound is awesome and it has a great mid-range but I found it too loud regarding the crowdy french environment. The race muffler is too painful in terms of maintenance. What else is available without machining and welding, bolt-on the race header, and quieter than a D&D ? White-Bros ? HSA ? Other ? Your rapid input will be much appreciated as my Buell will remain in the garage until a solution is found... |

Ride with a straight pipe for a week, then mount a new race or D&D muffler. It will sound nice and quite. |

Jerome, It's too bad you have the race header. The new SuperTrapp IDS slipon for the stock header really works great. It's now a very solid unit. Too bad they don't make one for the race header. They would probably replace the failing unit for good will. Brad |

Blake : straight pipe is the configuration that I had over the last few miles between the time when the SuperTrapp broke and the time when I reached home... I never felt so embarrassed on a bike in my life !!! Brad : SuperTrapp offered to me to replace for free the muffler, but as you said, the new version doesn't fit the race header. Therefore I wonder what to fit... The White Bros includes a removable 90° front elbow. Would the muffler without the elbow fit the race header ? Anybody has done that ? Need for some work on the muffler before it fits ? |

Jerome: THe W.B. will work with just a short male/ female adapter pipe. The W.B. is actually too short and this pipe would need to make up the difference. This shot should show you about what you need. I have thought about this myself but I don't have a race header for my X-3. You should be able to get a local exhaust shop to make yo up this pipe. I put this heat shield back on after roasting a pair of pants. I couldn't bear to put it back on untill I made some changes:

jerome, been there done that... to run the e-series with the race header you will need a straight section of tube, one end an inny the other end an outty, i cannot remember how long it needed to be [mine ended up being bastardized, took it to a welder that SAID hge welded stainless, and he butchered it hard] i think around 4" long seems right, test fit it to be sure, there is enough straight section on the supplied x1 elbow to do it if you can find a good welder. otherwise the inny/outty connector will work as a slipper mount with two hoseclamps [get the clamps at any truck shop [big trux]] there is a picture of it in my profile. btw its a great can, running mine with 16 discs race cleaner and dyno tune... delivers 78.6 lb/ft and 86.4 hp with a way flat torque curve that is above 70 lb/ft from 2500 to redline. |

Finished welding cracked O2 sensor mount. Welded 4 cracks on stiffener bracket,(back side of race header by timing cover), and beefed it up some. Also beefed up the collector where the mount has rubbed through. Went for a 10 mile ride to test it out. Lost a nut to the U bolt that replaced the broken T bolt clamp at lower mount. Next mission- To weld the mount to the collector and eliminate the clamp. Less parts to loose. If this don't work I'm going to try the tension spring deal. BTW- Who's idea was the Bosch O2 sensor!? I had to grind down a good craftsman 1/2" wrench just to tighten the stud nuts. |

Neil and Duane : thanks for your comments regarding the WB and race header. Actually I'll give a try to a german-made muffler for the Buell race header (HSA). No need to make any adaptation, design quite similar to the Buell race muffler, but metal packing needing no repacking, sturdy design and reasonable price. We'll see what it gives in terms of performance and sound. |

Jerome, Can you tell more about the HSA muffler, please? Where are you buying it from? Mail order? Can you indicate the price, please? Like you, I am also running the race header. I am just waiting for my SuperTrapp to fall off. Cheers, Semi |

Semi : have a look at the following url : www.hsaexhaust.de Udo, the boss of the company, rides a Buell and knows the bike very well. He is known for his muffler made for the stock header. It is one of the very few on the market which fills the deep in the torque curve and keeps at the same time noise level at cop-acceptance standard (it is TUV approved). I buy the muffler through a french dealer (Milwaukee Twin) who is next to the german border, who speaks german and who can arrange payment directly with Udo. The cost is 435 Euros, i.e. about 400$ for the race muffler. |

Jerome, thanks for the link. That X1 tank cover is just what I've been looking for. The UK supplier of HSA stuff wants £435 (€690) for that exhaust. I would be interested to hear what you think of it. Simon |

Just noticed that the site recommends a selling price of €638. Maybe not such a bad deal from the UK supplier. |

Another place that makes exhausts is Eyeball Engineering in England. If you havent already seen it you might want to check out UKBEG.com +click sponsers, eyeball. They make a stepped diam.header in stainless. The nicest thing they show though has to be that 97?S1 with small h.light + clip-on bars.Im thinking of going with a set-up like that(no headlight mounting ears on the fork tubes)but it looks like you'd have to drill a hole in the lower triple clamp + i really hesitate to do that.Any thoughts on if a 3 eights inch hole would weaken the clamp enough to be concerned? Thanks John |

Seeu911/Donn, How about the stainless specialties muffler for the race header? That looks like the best deal going for a race header. I'm interested! |

My new D&D slip-on has arrived and is sitting in my garage; the ECM and K&N haven't arrived yet. Any harm in installing the slip-on without the ECM? I'm getting anxious. Any general install suggestions? thanks, Joe ('01 X1) |

Joed, I just installed the D&D slip on about two weeks ago on my 2002 x1, it was a very easy install, its worth the wait to have everything put on at the same time, your going to love the sound. |

Here a weld, there a weld, every where a, Uh? You get the picture. Slapped extra weld on the support brace, Beefed it up some. We'll see if it cracks again! Then I attacked the hanger bracket. |

Hey guys I need your help. I just bought a D&D slip on exhaust from Parts411 because I have a new X1W and it has the ceramic blue headers and I didnt want to take them off but Parts411 accidently sent me the full system(For the price of the slip on) Will just the muffler of the full system work as just a skip on or should I replace the headers Too and put the full system on or should I just return it and get the proper slip on because there isnt too much of a gain using their headers? THanks for your help I want to get this stuff on before motorcycle week here. |

Necteau, No, the full race system muffler will not work with the stock pipe but that is a blessing. The full race system is a TREMENDOUS improvement over just a slip-on. I would guess at least 10 more hp in the mid-range. My suggestion is to put the full race system on. Take your pretty blue pipe and store it away for safekeeping. |

eBay the full system, buy the correct muffler and pocket the difference. Or, just be happy you got such a great deal on the full system. Use the money you saved to get the new header coated blue again if it strikes you. |

Or, be a stand-up guy and telephone parts411 to let them know about the goof. Most likely they will tell you to keep the system or return it for the muffler that you ordered, your preference. Then you won't have to feel guilty about taking advantage of someone's mistake. Honesty is the BEST policy. Consider if the situation were reversed. |

I called Parts 411 to see what happened and they said THat they drop shipped it directly from the D&D factory and they said they only paid the factory for the slip on price so the factory filled the order wrong. THe guy said I could keep it but if I wanted to exchange they would take care of it for me. I think i am just going to keep it and put the full system on my bike. Thanks for the responses. Its too bad my local shop hasnt received my ECM so I cant put these pipes on |

The ECM shouldn't take but five business days to get in. Ask your shop when they entered the order with the factory. If they haven't placed it yet, you can cancel and order from Sport Twin. |

Help, I am sure you have discussed the many options here, but I am new to the race exhaust and would like to know how to keep it in one piece. First, one of the two back hangers broke, but that was my fault. I only received one and made the other out of Aluminum, duh. Now it is steel, so I hope it will last. Then the hanger for the front mount split right at the 90 degree bend. I had it welded back together, but I don't have much faith in it. So now I am wondering what the best fix is for the front mount. I could weld it, design a new one, put a spacer in it, etc. Any ideas and/or experiences? Two weeks, two failures, not a great success rate. |

Coop, Thanks for the advice. I finally got the K&N and ecm, I threw everything together tonight. I found the fit of the D&D to be wonderfully tight. the only problem I had was getting the rear bracket mounted. I think I remember reading somewhere (and not in the install doc that shipped with the pipe) that both brackets at the rear of the pipe should mount on the outside of the hangers. That method seemed to provide the tightest fit but no matter how hard I tried I could not get it mounted that way. It was just a bit too tight. I ended up using washers to make up the space. What was your experience? Tomorrow I get the tps reset, I'll give you full performance report after that. |
