Just want to say that i love this thing. The last day I had a full days ride in before today (it was 65deg. here today so i took off work to ride all day) was back in Oct., on my old bike - three people pulled out in front of me that day. Two old people (large sunglass are the tip off-i learnt that lesson) and a car full of teenagers. I just happened to mention this to my UPS guy and he told me to get the Kisan headlight flasher, which I did. I think BackOff makes one, as well. Since i was selling the old bike I waited and installed it on the Uly (yeah, it's fast black model). Well it works, people even wait for me, before they turn. One guy went to pull out and stopped in his tracks. Very cool. Toward evening, though, I did get a couple of high beam flashed at me, but GOOD!, that means they see me. Just an FYI y'all. I would like one of these, and one for the brake light as well. Just want to be safe and seen this time around. This is my first bike since '94. I was the young kid wearing shorts, tee shirt and flip flops and no helmet. I know that you guys saw me back then. This time theres even a bright green Olympia jacket in the mix with the other safety gear. Man, this wisdom with age stuff makes since now. Glad to see that you got the faster black. Which model did you buy for the Uly? |

I didn't buy the Uly model, so I ended up soldering and wiring connectors to get it to work. I was too cheep to buy another one for the Uly after I got one for my former bike. But it does work. And one cool feature is that it has a tiny electric eye that you mount facing up... I just zip tied it to the handle bars out of the way. When night falls, it turns itself off. BTW, its legal throughout Canada, and the US. If you visit the LINK then you can pull in the Buell Uly and they'll tell you which one works. BackOff sells them as well. I have the BackOff XL for the rear brake light that needs installed ... I wish i wasn't so lazy. LINKY: http://www.kisantech.com/index.php?cat_id=2 John H. . |

I wouldn't be without a modulator. I wire mine to the high-beam flash switch and have gotten in the habit of tapping it whenever I approach an intersection. Be sure to carry the letter from the USDOT stating that modulators are legal and that federal law trumps local. Court |

There was a big "to do" over the hedlight modulator thing. The Federal Department of Transportation issued a "finding of fact" (or whatever their term is) saying they were legal and that no state law could make them illegal. I keep it under the seat of the bike. Looks something like THIS:
quote:September 11, 1997 US Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Mr. Walter T. Jakobowski, President Signal Dynamics Corporation P.O. Box 350441 Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33335 Dear Mr. Jakobowski: This is in reply to your letter of July 28, 1997, asking for an interpretation regarding the preemptive effect of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108. Your company manufactures motorcycle headlamp modulators "that comply with Standard No. 108." You report receiving comments that certain States do not allow use of this equipment. You ask for "an interpretation and a copy of the statutes that provide for Federal Law pre-empting any state laws that would disallow use of said Headlight Modulator." Section 30103(b) of Title 49, United States Code, provides in pertinent part that: b) PREEMPTION - (1) When a motor vehicle safety standard is in effect under this chapter, a State or a political subdivision of a State may prescribe or continue in effect a standard applicable to the same aspect of performance of a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment only if the standard is identical to the standard prescribed under this chapter. Paragraph S7.9.4 Motorcycle headlamp modulation (formerly S5.6) of Standard No. 108 specifies that a headlamp on a motorcycle may be wired to modulate, provided that it does so in accordance with the requirements prescribed by that paragraph. Under 49 U.S.C. 30103(b)(1), a State may have its own standard which allows a motorcycle headlamp to be wired to modulate in the same manner as prescribed under S7.9.4. However, since the Federal standard specifically allows a modulation of motorcycle headlamps, a State cannot have a standard prohibiting it. For your information, we are not aware of any State that forbids modulation of motorcycle headlamps. Taylor Vinson provided you with a copy of 49 U.S.C. 30103(b) on your visit to our Office on July 28. If you have further questions, you may reach him at 202-366-3820. Sincerely, John Womack Acting Chief Counsel
And you thought I never really rode . . . . . . you can thank Badweb. |

I have a habit . . . here is New York City of preferring "City Built" sorts of stuff. My last one was a very modded KLR650 with strobes, air horns, special suspension and super brakes . . Riding in NYC is a purely self defense undertaking. It's rally a lot of fun . . but it's not like taking a Hayabusa or 1125R and hitting the open road anywhere else in the USA. I've done a good deal of commuting in LA. . . .it's kid's play compared to NYC. NYC gets better when you find out that we literally have potholes that are greater than 12" deep and I often find "split" bridge plates covering excavations that, due to being unsecured, have seperated leaving a gap. Tailgating, lane splitting and some things you can get away with in London or LA. . . . are quick trips to the morgue in Gotham. I've recently secured two titled frames in very poor condition. . . and am preparing to undertake a little project. I'm thinking about restarting my summer "jazz, cheescake and coffee" midnight tours on the full moon again . . . Gotham, from 11:00PM Saturday night until Noon on Sunday . . . is a HOOT! |

Would it be better to modulate the stock brake light or add another light and leave the stock light alone? |

"Would it be better to modulate the stock brake light or add another light and leave the stock light alone?" Hey Chris, I had a brakelight modulator on my prior bike (it does work)- i loved it. it worked great during sudden, unexpected, stops. Now I plan to add the Backoff XP to the Uly brake light and add it (wire it in) to an LED lic. plate frame as well.
