What do you think the odds are that a smaller displacement version of the 1125R is in the works?

When I was at the local dealer taking a look at the 1125R and chatting with a sales guy, we got on the topic of a smaller version and how we both thought it was a logical future development.

Truthfully, I think the 1125R would be too much power for my riding -- or at least overkill for my needs. The low and midrange torque would be great all the time. But even on the track, I would never make full use of the peak power for fear of highsiding.

A version with a smaller motor, that was otherwise similar would be more my speed. And would likely cost less to insure. Plus it might return better MPG numbers, extending the range a bit. I personally wouldn't feel the need to pay significantly less for such a bike, say maybe $1000 less.

Do you think Buell might opt to offer a smaller 1125R, sort of like Ducati with their 1098 and 848?

I doubt that anyone is using peak power in the turns, however it sure will be nice powering down the straights. In any case, rumor has it with the linear power it will take quite an effort to get into a highside situation.

I was just thinking about a 600cc single for the blast or maybe a 750cc thru 900cc twin for a new xb style bike.

Nah, Buell needs to make a naked version without dumbing down the power like most manufacturers do. Depending on the long haul comfort of the 1125r, a streetfighter version may be in my future.

Now if you are talking about ADDING a smaller displacement XB style bike in addition to the full power streetfighter version--YES!

For some reason smaller displacment sport bikes don't seem to sell well in the USA. I guess gas need to get higher priced? j/k.

as the owner of a 08 Busa, I say enjoy the 1125's power.
Today I was doing wot out of corners all day, just lean more, shift your butt and twist.

Yes. Adding another engine size to the family. Ideally there would be 3-4 versions of the 1125R, the supersport, naked bike, and the adventure and/or sport touring model.

Then in addition to that a couple of smaller engine versions at around 800-900cc. One a supersport and the other perhaps a naked bike.

As to the how controllable the power of the 1125R will be... I'm sure that it can be carefully metered and is more forgiving than some other bikes in that class. But being honest with myself and not letting ego strut about, I don't need that much power to have fun.

I know HP is king here in the States. So it would be risky to hope a smaller version would sell in enough numbers to make it worthwhile. But I'd be interested and perhaps some others would be too.

The power delivery on this bike is so smooth it's scary!! There are absolutely no surprises or spikes at all. The only time I could get the rear to slide on the track was when I did it on purpose by grabbing a huge handful of throttle at full lean. So unless you're a complete idiot you wouldn't be doing much of that! As long as I was smooth with the gas I never felt out of control. The bike just hooked up and pulled hard all the way to the limiter.

Not yet, have no doubts the bike rides incredibly well. I love Buell's handling and this is a great engine. I'm just holding off until aftermarket dresses her up for my taste. I know I will get one, just as soon as I can make love with the lights on.

My guess is 2009's will be out shortly also.

Those are inlines not twins, different animals. Those will all do 150mph.

Thanks Zac, I'll getting there slowly and very excited about some of the recent aftermarket photos making their way out. THe last 12 months I have bought 3 new bikes, the 08 Firebolt, 08 Busa, 07 KTM, I'm thinking I will be a 2009 owner of the 1125R so i can be picking from several aftermarket fairing - tails.

yeah when I hear 600's I automatically think the UJM's

Always remember, YOU control the power of the bike. If you don't want all the power, then don't twist the happy handle as much. You could even go so far as to adjust slack into the cable so you can't go WOT if you were really fearful of your right wrist growing a brain of it's own and twisting more than you want it to.

Developing a smaller motor will add more overhead for Buell, and most people want more power not less. If they sold the 1125 will a smaller bore, then they couldn't realistically charge the same amount for it, so they have the same engine, which costs the same to make, but make less money on each one they sell. Not smart business.

I'm hoping Buell will leave the engine alone, and build different bikes around it. A streetfighter and an Adventure/Tourer would be the logical first step.

They should also take the development from the dirt bike project and use the engine in a new liquid cooled Blast.

That, and the fact that 600 supersports are REALLY damn hard to ride.

A twin is so forgiving with it's wide powerband. But a 600 will give you much of nothing until you get it wound up, then....BAM!....you get LOTS of power all at once.

It took me quite awhile to get used to the way a 600 makes power. After riding my Ulysses for two years, then buying a Gixxer 600 for the track...Wow! It's a big difference!

I'd sell my newly purchased XB9S and buy a smaller displacement version of the 1125R in a heartbeat.
The major issue for the 1125R is insurance. I don't know what gives but my insurance is HIGH. I have a clean record but I guess being a young male is reason enough to screw me.
I think a <1000cc version would be easier on the wallet and still give enough performance to keep up with the inline 600's.
