Define Upstate? Their are some who think anything past that sign on the MJ Deegan are upstate I am near Albany. Right now we only have a bit of snow (maybe 6" on the ground) but it has been warm (40's) the last day or 2. Normally I plan on putting the bike away in mid to Late Nov and bring it back out for good, sometime in March-April. The weather's been a bit squirrely these past couple years. So have done some riding in Feb (Weather might be nice, but lots of salt/sand on the road). So it is hard to say. But if you are out somewhere near the Tug Hill Plateau you will get tons of lake effect. NY is a pretty big state, so depends exactly where you are looking. |

I'm in the Hudson River Valley(12 miles from Walden) Last winter it was beautiful & warm all the way till January. Then we got two significant snow storms. February was cold as hell, March was nice, but then April got cold again and it rained almost every day in april. This year has been much cooler. It was quite cold in November, and we've had three snow/ice storm so far this December. By comparison, last winter I used a total of 670 gallons of home heating oil. So far this year, I've used 380 gallons and we're not even half way through. If I were relocating, it would be further south. Something with a 2-3 month winter season rather than a 4-6 month one. City, I'm upstate (rochester). BTW you really need to be north of Albany to be upstate IMHO. I but a couple hundred on in November, but only 20 or so in December, 14 of which were yesterday. Winter riding is definitely hit or miss. The salt is an issue, salt is like hitting wet gravel, something to avoid. Like Saintly said March and April are probably have the most variance, anything from 60 and sunny to 20 and 2 ft of snow. The winter gives you tons of time to work on the bike if your garage area has some heat. A friend managed 20,000 miles this year, all way upstate and some north of Quebec. So I'd say it depends on the rider, the part of the state you're looking at some very fine roads as does northern PA. Also its not all that far to the Gap or Blue Ridge Parkway. matt |

Why we live here is always a discussion. Even though Iowa itself doesn't give much for weather or riding, we are smack dab in the middle of opportunities. It is only a days ride to Arkansas, 1-1/2 days to Colorado or 2 days to the East. I also usually get some riding in until January sets in but this year it started snowing early and has been since. |

Binghamton here and pretty much what mbsween said. Getting some snow today so that will wipe out at least a week. I don't like riding with the fresh salt and the rest of the sand and crap on the road. Eats the bike and can make the bike slide. On days that are around 35 or lower I keep it in the garage. I don't want to come up on some hidden ice in the shadows. So the riding season is really late spring til early fall. Anything beyond that is a great bonus. If you're looking at a road trip I'd start at southern PA line and work south. Seems weird but that is only about 4 hours south and it can seem like a totally different world. Good luck and enjoy |

As for Being North of Albany upstate. Guess it depends on your perspective. I grew up West of Albany, and went to College and westchester, and everybody there was like, I can't believe we are going to school Upstate (They where from Long Island, NYC, The bronx,etc...). As I said before it finally hit me, why everybody calls it Upstate. When you are on the Major Deegan Expressway coming north of the City. There is an exit ramp. Goes towards the left, so you can merge onto 87 (Been a while since I've been past it). And it says 87N- Albany/Upstate. That being said finally think it is time to break down and get a snowblower (New House, New baby == No $$), cause we got about a foot this morning a bit West and North (Guess I am upstate ) of Albany. Even more in the hilltowns where I tend to ride.. |

make sure you check the local tax situation in the ny area you are interested in. i'm in orange cnty ny and my 1600sqft house is $16,000/yr in prop and school taxes(they were $5,000 in 2001). the tax situation varies greatly from place to place here. if you are able to benefit from the proximity to nyc then this is a great area, if not then it is just expensive. |

I'm down here in western NY, west of Buffalo, and its around 30 today and getting colder. Not for long though its going to warm again next week back into the 40s. I just got done doing maintenance on my snowmobile even though there is not enough snow to ride. I don't take the bike out after the the plow trucks drop all the salt and sand on the roads, its just to dangerous. Thats why I have a my Polaris EdgeX it keeps me same in the colder months but every year it seems like the costs to ride it go up and the riding time gets shorter. I'm sure there are some lake effect storms on there way but with the warm temps, it comes down in rain and ruins all the snow. I could user a good riding fix soon though. |

Born and raised in Syracuse. For us, "Upstate" was as much of a cultural distinction as geographic one. When asked where are you from, the response was "Upstate New York" - making it clear that we were not from the "City" I was in my 30s before I went to NYC (briefly for a job interview) and didn't go again until 9-12-01 Now its one of our favorite places As for the snow, 120 plus inches per year is the number one reason we moced to Marlyland two years ago. I miss a lot of things about NY (Upstate and downstate) but the snow is not one of them |

Raised in Glens Falls, and Lake George, about a half hour north of Albany. Played in the Adirondacks most of my younger years, beautiful country there... I agree with Mbsween, anything North of Albany is upstate, although I can see where the city folk consider anything north of the city, "upstate". Moved a long time ago to warmer climates, but still come up in the summers to visit family. Talking to Sister tonight, she's been getting snow in Glens Falls for two days now, and still not letting up. |

"Upstate" was as much of a cultural distinction as geographic one. When asked where are you from, the response was "Upstate New York" - making it clear that we were not from the "City" Same here. I live a bit north of Albany and everyone around here uses the "upstate" modifyer to seperate ourselves from New York City, since everyone who doesn't live here seems to think there's nothing besides the city in this state. The Catskills are a really nice place to ride. The Adirondacks are regarded as one of the prettiest areas in the country, and the Adirondack Park ensures things stay pretty. The Bershires and Green mountains are just to the east as well. TONS of great riding. People bitch about the snow, but it gives you time to work on the bike and really appreciate the warmer months. Anyways, take up skiing and you'll never think twice about it. I take the bike out in early March and put it away late November. |

The bike stock usually gets pretty high by spring, but they sell bikes all year. Most of them offer special storage/service packages to get some cash flow through the service department. I bought my bike in December last year, and put a deposit down on one in November the last time. |

City, As to taxes, you may also want to figure in housing costs. My house in Roch is ~2400 square feet and has a 2.5 sq ft garage and sits on just under 3/4 of an acre. Cost was lest than 180k new. I've worked in San Diego, San Fran/San Jose, Seattle, Raleigh NC and Washington DC. You can't touch property for anything like "upstate" costs. Granted our taxes are much more than say Cary NC (which is close to all sorts of good roads), so just like picking a bike, there are lots of things to consider. On the east coast I'm thinking Midnight hit it right. The Virginia/Maryland area would work for weather, taxes, driving, and access to interesting roads. BTW midnight I grew up in Syracuse also, about the same time as you did. Went to the dome for a bball game, always fun to go home. matt |
