I just bought an 06 Ulysses (Orange because they are faster!) It needs a new rear tire at 5,000 miles. Current is a Dunlop 616. Has anyone had success with a brand that lasts longer? I will post pictures once I pull the camera away from the wife!! I have been reading the board for a week or so and it is great how you guys all share info. I hope I can contribute in time with experiences with my Uly. |

Hey Richard how was the ride home? Left you a message yesterday. There is a little life left in that rear. I know they went to a different brand (Scorpion Sync's) on the '07 and up that is not as good in the dirt/gravel as the Dunlop's but people seem to like them. Depends on what riding you will be doing. I had some Michelin Pilot roads on my '03 XB9S that dramatically improved handling and the tire wear was awesome. You will get varied opinions on tires, kinda off like asking what your favorite running shoe is. Like I said for the Uly depends on what type of riding you will doing. If it is mostly highway then Avon Storm ST, Michelin Pilot Roads or Scorpion Sync would be a good choice for good wear and good grip. |

If you want something that is good for off-road some have squeezed the 160 size rear of the Avon Distanzia on the Uly rear. (Message edited by krassh on December 31, 2007) |

Hi Ken. The ride home was fun. I rode it to work in LA today (80 miles one way). I will probably do 90% on the freeway, but do want to be able to go on dirt roads once in awhile. I have friends who love to go to Mexico and I want to have confidence the tires will hold up. Thanks for the info. Talk to you soon |

I have run 7 sets of tires on my ULY with 35K miles...The Dunlop 616 were by far the worst on mileage. I got 2,500 miles...all the others run between 4,000 and 7000. There are no 180 rear tires that are good off road and bluntly the ULY is no offroader..DRY dirt roads ok...My next tires will be the new Michelin Pilot Road 2. This tire has the hard center and softer sides.. the new "new technology". Check it out. (Message edited by adrian_8 on December 31, 2007) |

+1 for the Michelin Pilot Road 2. I would try the Michelin's Richard, they will be great on the highway and should do alright on the dry dirt roads. (Message edited by krassh on December 31, 2007) |

And if you cannot find the Michelin Pilot Road 2 the original Michelin Pilot Road will suffice as they are high mileage tires with a hard center as well. |

Just realize it may not have been designed for off road use but if you have the desire and ability go for it. It is your bike. I take mine through fields and such and just have to be aware of the design limitations. Distanzias will be my next tire unless a better off road tie come out. |

I also recently purchased an 06 Uly which has stock tires.I only have put 800mi. on the bike. Some of this was on secondary dirt roads.I felt the stock 616s were poor on the front. I have read guys are using the Distanzias.I also have a KTM450 street moto that I run Distanzias on. I have put thousands of miles on this both street and dirt. The tires wore very well, but the front was so loose on dirt roads it was scary. So my question is dose this tire seem to work better on dirt with a heavier bike ? Im considering Pirellis for the KTM that only weighs 235lbs but if the Avons are working for the Uly I can get them cheaper. |

Powder & Hightest - The D616 tires you have on the bike are not well regarded. In particular I found that the front will cup long before it gets to the wear bars, and handling will suffer. I'd urge you to change the front when you do the rear. I have no experience with off road tires, so I can't recommend one. The last set of tires I put on were Continental Road Attacks. I got over 9000 miles out of the rear, and I was extremely pleased with that. |

I have 10,000km on a pair of pilot road 2's on my BMW and have been really happy with them, still going strong, super grippy in on dry and wet sealed road, a little noisy early on but very reliable... very little off road experience with them though cos it's a not a very happy bike in the dirt |

Distanzias will be my next tire unless a better off road tie come out. Hear, hear! They've worked great for me, both on and off pavement. |

mmmm I do love the Pirelli Mt-60s . They mount right up and have a nice nobbie pattern for the chunky, muddy mucky stuff that we get in the NW for winter.

Hey City Those Pirellis look to be much more stable on the dirt. Guess I'll be buying 2 sets |

Can anyone comment as to how the pilot road 2's handle compared to the scorpion syncs that are so highly praised??? On paper the pilot road 2's sound great... but thats on paper. I was set on geting some syncs fitted until all of this pilot road 2 talk... |

Are the mt60's a 160 also? I wonder what the weight rating is on them. Still leaning towards the Distanzias. Unfortunately I will not replace my syncs any time soon, over 3k and they almost look new. |

what sort of distance are the MT60's giving you guys,we can't get them in Aus,as we need to special order and wait about 6 to 8 weeks. |

Wademan, I'm not sure if it's just how i ride, but i've never lost traction, dry or wet on smooth roads with my pilot road 2's on my BMW K1200RS, they seem to have a bit more bank angle to them than the syncs on my uly, but i hear quite a bit more noise from the rear tire with the michelin. Wear life is excellent. But in my limited experience of taking that very heavy very road oriented bike on gravel, i wouldn't recommend the pilot for unsealed surfaces at all. Hope this is helpful. Ordered, a set of distanzias, got the rear in today-looks fantastic, but will try the mt-60s next to compare, obviously mileage and offroad capability is what I'm after-will update after March Badness |

If I make it to march badness, I will be through this set by then and back on the Pirelli Stockers for the CityX. I have heard about 35-4500 miles for the rear. I will find out, I only have 400 on them now, they love the chunky muddy sluggy stuff we get during the NW winters |

I do 99% pavement carving with my Uly. I just picked up my fifth rear tire. I got 6000 miles out of the original Dunlop, I didn't like the wet traction or the lumpy, uneven wear. This is my fourth Scorpion Sync, I have put 6000 miles on each of them also. They are consistent and predictable as to how they work on pavement, wet or dry, I like how they feel. I noticed they have changed the interior mold design. The last one had little rubber ribs inside. This one has a more flattened alligator skin look. The outside appears the same. |

MT60's at 2/32" after 2,000 miles with 90% on & 10% off road. |

2000 miles rules those out for me, unless I dig up a second set of wheels. |

Here's a thread on Avon Storms. Seems that there have been a lot of problems with them. http://forums.delphiforums.com/MCTourer/messages/? msg=29891.1 |

I put Distanzias on Joules in December, put about 600 miles on before snows settled in, including one trek up in the Rockies on dirt and gravel. Loved them, much more confident off pavement, no noticeable degradation on the street. |

I've tried the 616, MT60's and Distanzas. honestly I am digging the Distanzas alot. Rain, they are awsome my feet get drenched due to the sheading water. Off road I was able to do some local single track following a few ATV's with confidence. (until I met the 1/2 red clay that packs any tire full and followed by a low side every time. 5 to be exact. BTW the ULY is a TANK, takes a licking and keeps on ticking). The rear sheds mud much better than the MT60's. I've got 4000 on the Distanza rear tire now and just got to the wear bar (that is with 2000 miles of slab up I-81). After reading the reveiw on the MTF page I think I'm going to wait a bit on the Storms |
