Can any of you recommend a route that will get me there somewhat quickly with a couple of decent roads. I don't want to just cruise up I15 the whole way. A couple of twisties would be nice. Should I head a little north and go through Death Valley? |

Something like this?
That is in terms of written directions: 67 north out of SD At Ramona continue on 79 At Aguanga take 371 then continue on 74 towards Palm Desert left on Country club drive to go to I-10 east Exit I-10 and go north on Cottonwood Springs Road (becomes Eldorado Mine road which becomes Utah Trail road as it crosses 62. Right on Amboy rd Right on National Trails hwy Left on Kelbaker Rd (you're about to cross I40) In Flynn right onto Kelso Chima (Check out the rail station in Chima by the way) Follow Morningstar Mine Rd to Nipomo and then it connects with I15 at the CA/NV border All roads are paved. The surface is a bit rough on the segment from I10 to 29 Palms but still enjoyable. Get gas in 29 palms. Next gas station is in Amboy. But may or may not be open. I've done this on my XB so it is fine, just be aware of gas stops. A sum total of 405 miles (Message edited by doerman on December 29, 2007) |

Roy's in Amboy is closed as far as I know. Well, actually there is a caretaker there, but, they sell just water and candy for now. I work thru Amboy on the Railroad.....Nearest gas stops to Amboy is Fenner, Ca. or Ludlow, Ca. |

If you gas up in 29 Palms then you have 145 miles to stateline on I15. If you follow Kelbaker rd to Baker Ca on I 15 then you have 125 miles from 29 Palms. My mapsoftware does not show any gas stations in between 29 Palms and either Baker or StateLine. So Baker is probably the safer bet. But I did go through from 29Palms to StateLine on a tankful (sweating it!) |
