On the 1125 you can ride off with the kickstand down. I know, I've done that a couple of times already. Both times the kickstand nicely found its way to the undeployed position w/o drama but startling me of course.

I was just wondering if it is designed to retract when a dufus like me forget to put it up before I ride off?

Second kickstand question is if it locks in place on a slight downhill slope?

I don't think it locks Asbjorn.
Always kick it into first if you park on a slope.
Biker parking brake.

Glad it doesn't have that switch like the Firebolt.

Guess I should say "shut it down in first" since the owner's manual says:
DO NOT SHIFT WHEN MOTOR IS NOT RUNNING

I got into the habit of ALWAYS parking the bike in gear...
I learned that the hard way, while I was helping a friend of mine pick up her Ducati I watched my firebolt roll down the hill before my eyes... Truly heart wrenching...

A friend of mine has the same problem of leaving the kickstand down... And the RC51 does not have a forgiving kickstand like the Buell so he has gotten airborne on several occasions... Luckily he did not go down.
So I have thrown keys,lighters,packs of smokes at him as he was leaving my house with it down...
In an effort to remind himself, he printed out "GOT KICKSTAND?" on a strip of paper and taped it next to the instrument panel.

Yes, it is designed to retract. There is a complex SAE test procedure you have to go through to prove such a system works. It will always retract before lifting the bike at all. It does not lock in place, so please park your bike in gear!

My kickstand doesn't auto-retract.
Twice now I've noticed an odd metal grinding sound when slowly pulling away from the gas pump only to realize I've left the stand down.

Am I doing something wrong?
Maybe I should read the manual?

I swore the manual said the bike wasn't supposed to remain running in gear with kickstand down. And i as well have forgotten to retract the stand and heard that scary and rather heart wrenching scrape. I thought i broke something.

There is wiring to install an interlock switch on the kickstand.
There is a bit in the OBDII for a kickstand switch.
Mine has a jumper in the plug, by the kickstand, no interlock.

Thank you so much BMC, that switch was a PITA on my Firebolt.

What the Anony said above was NOT that it "Auto-retracts" like BMWs and others, but that it WILL fold back up before causing the rear tire to come off the ground if you forget it and take a hard left.
It does NOT lock, like a Harley kickstand, so park in gear if you are on any slope.

Zacster, so true. Japanese bikes have had a sidestand kill switch for many years.

Picture this: we mount up for a group sportbike ride. I'm the leader, positioned out in front. Everybody ready,....... I pull in the clutch and snick the bike into gear, it stalls! All helmets in the group simultaneously tilt down to look at my kickstand. I see the smiling eyes behind the full face helmets.

Actually, I think the sidestand kill switch is good. The proof,....I haven't ridden off with my sidestand down in many years.

i dont know why people dislike the sidestand switch, id rather have it and it stall than not and be in a hairy situation just down the road


ill say this
onmy s3 (with switch) its rubbery where the switch is, so when you kick it up its fairly quiet.
with my 1125 it makes a lot of noise when it comes up, i find myself keeping my foot on it the whole time as it comes up, dont want it to damage anything from slamminginto the motor or something

thats not a problem, is it?

The problem I had with mine was that one of the wires going to it broke and I couldn't go.
I found a smushed Bud can on the ground and cut a jumper for the harness from it.
Tie-wrapped it up and it's still that way, 10k miles later.
I like to keep things American where I can.

My 07 xb9r does not have the sidestand switch. I have ridden off with the stand down twice now. Both times it has popped right up the first time I leaned it to the left. My only indication was a momentary scraping sound. The first time it happened, I thought I was just lucky. The second time I got to thinking it was by design.

My Buell Friends,

Japanese manufacturer's quality control makes it highly unlikely that a sidestand safety switch will fail. Not sure about Buell.

If you crash a Jap bike, you may need to hot wire the clutch safety switch.

My last two bikes with the switch were Italian (Aprilia) and Japanese (VFR800). I remember threads on both bike forums complaining about faulty side stand switches. I prefer the Buell approach. It works, and won't leave you stranded.

My kick stand spring broke while I was riding. I was able to ride and turn just fine. Has this happen to anyone?

Fastrichie: Obviously you didn't try searching.

Yes, it's happened to many. There was even a recall on the spring affecting some bikes. You should check to see if yours had been done previously. If not, perhaps you can get it replaced free.


Full disclosures: I have not had my jiffy stand (kickstand) spring fail. I did get the spring recall replacement done long ago. I have just shy of 54,000 miles on my 2008 1125R.
