My dealer tells me they can't install my micron and hi-flow airfilter because they have no way of reflashing the ecu's on the '08's yet? Any solutions out there at this time? Does the ecmspy that I keep seeing mentioned work with an '08? Hope I posted this in an appropriate spot. |

Wont the AFV and the O2 sensor sort this out? |

You might not need to reflash the ECM. But you may. The AFV and 02 sensor may adjust well enough to the new configuration. If it were me, I'd sure give it a try, especially in cool weather. If you hear any significant repeated pinging, then stop and put the bike back to stock until you can obtain the required ECM remapping. |

We're working on it. Directlink is talking to the 08 XB12 ECMs in the lab, not yet released for public consumption yet but will be very soon. The AFV will not "sort it out" as good as it should. If a pipe made 10% more power at ALL RPMs, it would do a decent job of it. But no pipe like that exists. The amount the ECM will learn in the Closed Loop Learn Domain generally does NOT match the amount that it needs to learn in the open loop domain. Pipes generally do not have a linear responseacross the entire RPM operational domain. Some pipes are better than others in this regard. A D&D is a fairly poor match in this regard, a Drummer isn't too bad, a Micron isn't horrible but it could be better. In general, a race ECM is a better and safer unmapped solution, because the additional fueling margin in the upper RPMs will safely compensate for any mismatch that may exist up there, and there is far greater potential for damage in the upper RPMs where less thermal margin exists for lean mixtures. You always want to err on the rich side in the upper RPMs. But unfortunately, the race ECM will not work on the 08's. I'm generally recommending that 08 folks NOT change their muffler at this time. But I also always recommend that folks not change their muffler for at least the first 2500 miles anyway. You want to uncover infant mortality issues on a stock engine. Once you start farkling with it, it isn't the configuration that Buell sold and is not the one they are warrantying. Once you start modifying it, you need to accept that it is YOUR responsibility if it breaks, NOT Buells. Al |

Al, I want to make an alloy pipe which looks the same as the original race pipe but intend to make the internal pipes about 10% larger in diameter. The bulkheads(jackpoints?) will be double thickness and the pipe ends flared for better flow. Also aim to connect two of the pipes in the rear section to allow the same tuned length for the valve to operate as per usual. This will allow me to have the dual outlet as per the race can. Intend to HPC inside and out of the pipes and exhaust prior to welding up. Do you see any issues please? |

ECMs up to 2007 monitored mixture even in open loop and increased AFV if the engine was running too lean for a given period. If they didn't abandon this feature in MY 08, the danger for damage seems pretty low to me. Regards, Gunter |

Al makes sense and sounds to me like he has the skinny on whatever relevant R&D is being conducted. I beat on my stuff pretty hard, I don't like blowing holes through piston crowns on my git-gos. I can wait. |
