I just had my 2 year mandatory inspection and had the bike (XB12r) looked over by Buell at the same time(13500km). Upon starting it up I noticed it sounded different but just said thanks and went on my way. At the first set of lights I noticed the REV needle bouncing around, climbing up to 1500RPM then dropping to 1000 over and over. Went for a 30minute ride to see if warming it up might make a difference, but no. It also seems to take longer for the revs to drop back to the idle position after reving the bike. Any ideas about what the problem might be so I can point the idiot in the right direcion when i go back to complain? Did he screw up the TPS? or did he set the idle too high/low? Before the service the needle used to bounce a little (100-300 REVS) when cold then smooth out and sit nicely at 1050REVS when idleing. %^&&$#@ me off a bit considering the service cost $500 |

I bet a 110 bucks, the TPS was not done correctly. When its not done right it will do exactly what you described. You could try to set your idle when its WARM down a little to 1050-1150. To see if that helps. If that doesnt help your more than welcome to come down to Iwakuni and use my VDSTS anytime to reset it. Or just take it back and make them understand how to do a TPS reset. Hope this helps |

Thanks for the quick reply Sgthigg. It gets frustrating here in Japan. You take a chance and pay someone to do something for you and they turn out to be a poser, someone who knows less about it that you do. A #$%^ in a uniform who says he is an expert. I'll have to look up where Iwakuni is and catch up with you sometime. Are you a member of the gaijinriders dot com? Anyway Im off to check for a leak in the airbox, thats all I can do for now. |

Trust me its the same way back in the USA when you go to a dealership. They ALWAYS screw something up. I remember I had to teach the Tech how to take my seat off the bike for my 1000 mile service. After that I never went back unless it was warranty work. Thats why I try to do as much as I can my self. Atleast in Japan I get the feeling they would atleast try to make it right. The best 50$ you could spend on the bike is getting the service manual. I will checkout the web site. I have never see it before. Thanks. |

"I remember I had to teach the Tech how to take my seat off the bike for my 1000 mile service" And that's when me 'n the bike would have come straight back home. Sheesh. ~SM |

There are two things that could go wrong after a service, both could and should have been caught during the test ride. Used XB spark plug wires are hard to re-install correctly and sometimes even though the boots are slid all the way down the wires did not clip into place. This would cause your rough idle and miss at higher RPMs. ... The engine temp sensor connector can sometimes get disconnected while tying off the other wires. The bike will start when cold but within just a few minutes will start to run rough, because most of the things the ECM controls are skewed by temp. ..On the issue of the TPS, if it was correct before the service, it should still be correct following the service. All the ECM wants to know is where Zero is. So if the cables, TS Sensor, or ECM were not replaced they should be OK. It's not a big deal to reset it abs yes if it is wrong the bike will not run correctly. ... Good Luck Terry |
