Girlfriend's '03 9S with 13K miles. Check engine engine started occasionally illuminating this summer. I checked for codes (none) and chaffed wires (none). That light seems to have stopped coming on. Now, however, the oil pressure light won't go out. I won't let her ride it. So far I checked the oil. It's full and was fresh 3K ago. I'll change it when I'm done. I replaced the pressure switch, and checked for a short in the wire. (Nothing I can find, but I HATE doing electrical) Next I pulled some of the oil lines and checked for clogs (none). Tonight I'll pull and clean the check valve that the filter screws onto. Am I avoiding the inevitable? Will I need to replace the gear and pump or just the gear? Any other suggestions? |

If the gear went, it probably would have been a fairly spectacular failure. So I doubt it is that. The routing of that wire bundle near the battery terminal can cause some near microscopic nicks (almost invisible unless your nose is right up on it) that can do some whacky stuff. Look really closely there. |

Why don't you simply deny or confirm with a pressure gauge? Screw the gauge into the threaded sensor hole. If you got pressure, then chase electrical gremlins. If you don't have any pressure....... I'm not gonna say it. |

Do I need to get the HD gauge? or can I get something generic at Pep Boys? |

get the generic pep boys/ autozone gauge. I think it's made by Lisle or K-D tools. It's approx $12 and has a flexible hose lead on it. |

Bert Maybe someone with a manual will chime in with system oil pressure. I know my S1/3 run about 17 PSI according to the manuals. I'm not sure about the XBs pressure. Joe |

Oil pump specifications on XB's according to the manual, after warming engine, rev to 2500RPM, oil pressure will vary from 10-17psi @ 950-1050RPM 7-12psi. Sure hope its the check valve or switch. Brian |

Thanx guys... I believe it's just a short that I cqan't locate. Top end is not making any unusual noises. I was not able to find a cheap pressure gauge at Pep Boys or Sears so I went to the HD dealer. The service manager even said not to worry unless I hear strange noises. Tomorrow I'll remove and clean the check valve then change the oil and trace the wires one more time. After that, it goes to the dealer. Oh, the HD gauge is $250.00, that's for a whole set of gauges, but that's how they're sold. |

By the time you hear the strange noises it's probably to late. Maybe spontaneous disassembly. |

He is not worried because by the time you hear strange noises he will be hearing your hard earned cash going into his dealership. Find a gauge and check the pressure. If you have pressure then go searching for that electrical gremlin. |

Kuuud, I'll ship my gauge to you if you want to use it. You're only in PA right? I'm in NY, you'll receive it in 2 days. I'd hate to see you grenade your engine! And $250 for a Harley gauge is absurd! don't even consider it. They go for around $10 - $35 in my neck of the woods. |

Here's a cheap one if you want to buy one. An oil pressure gauge is a great thing to always have on hand. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-ENGINE-OIL-PRES SURE-TESTER-w-GAUGE-DIAGNOSTIC-TOOL_W0QQitemZ33019 4275285QQihZ014QQcategoryZ43989QQssPageNameZWDVWQQ rdZ1QQcmdZViewItem |

Hmmm, also struck out at AutoZone, Advance Auto, Carquest and a few independents. NAPA has one for $70. It looks just like the $10 on eBay!!! I guess I'll ebay it and just wait a week. Thanks for all the help guys. You're right, it's prob a short but I def wanna rule out the pressure. Thanks for the offer, Saintly, but I buy one so I have it for the future. Bret |

Received oil pressure test gauge. Tried it out and bike registered a big 'zero'. It's now at the stealership. |
