This seller has these lamps in Dual-Filament type (turn + running light). I'd seen them before in a number of places, but always only as a regular single filament...
I had to drill out the mounting holes a bit to allow for the thicker stalks. I also had to replace the connectors on the new lights (they were too small), and tap off the brake low lamp line. All quite easy. These turned out really nice and I think they will end up being the one best thing I've done to the bike (as they increase my visibility to other traffic). They disappear / blend into the bodywork very nicely and are BRIGHT! You might note that [are not the same but] they also look very similar to the new lights on the 1125. He has them with black, chrome, and carbon fiber (real, looking, I dunno) housings. I'll post up more pics when I get around to doing the fronts...

Those do look good! I used the single filament version on my bolt, front and rear! |

That's WAY brighter than the effect I get with the Kisan SM-1 running light option, using stock turn signals as the running lights. Only thing is the state law here requires red running lights in the back. I notice many of the 'cool' turn signals don't come red. |

Midknyte, What type did you buy, since they didn't list Buell? And did you do the same for the front? |

Are the stalks rigid or flexable? |

I bought the Ducati ones (though I think they are all the same) because our stock signals are the same as some of the Duc's. I thought that they would fit right on, but I had to drill out the holes after all... Not rigid. Not overly flexible. Take a good look at the first pic up there and you can see that there's about 3/4 inch of rubber for the inside part of the stalk. I plan on doing the fronts also, but I only bought the one set to see if I liked them first. |

Are you going to have the front act as a running light also? |

abso'tutely Yes, I'm changing these out for the dual light functionality. These give me more lights w/o changing things too much. (Message edited by midknyte on December 02, 2007) |

Getting around to the fronts now... Terminals on the lights are too small - replace 'em with 22-18 AWG terminals from Ace Hardware:

Since the low beam on the Firebolt is on all the time, I just made a shunt to tap off of it for the low/running lights (like it did with the tail lamp). Keeps things nice and plug & play...
All finished & heat shrinked...
22-18 blade connectors...

Since you'll be half way there (with the front fairing off) - be sure to take you low lamp out and check the reflector. On the left is my reflector at 10,000 miles. On the right, a new one...

Tx05xb12s found an ingenious spot to put the ballast(s) http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=32777&post=1091623#POST1091623 There's juuuust enough room to hide them by velcro-ing them to the inside of the R fairing:
Almost done...

GRRRRAAAAAAHHHHH! Ballast too big. Will not fit in fairing. Still a good idea, but only if you have a slim/small ballast. |

CCryder and Hammer71 replied with links to an ultra-slim ballast here, http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=32777&post=1094408#POST1094408 from http://www.xenonrider.com/ and from this guy on ebay http://search.stores.ebay.com/THE-KING-OF-HID_super-slim-ballast_W0QQfciZQ2d1QQfclZ4QQfsnZTHEQ20KINGQ20OFQ20HIDQQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsaselZ125385054QQsofpZ0 Ballast is 3 1/4" x 2 1/2" x 1/2", with a separate igniter measuring 7/8" x 1 1/4" x 2 1/2". Block o' wood test fit says it'll work out fine.

New ballast received. Significantly smaller. And just as good for me - the bulb connector is the same.
Two piece system though (ballast and igniter),
but it'll pack in nicely I think
there's a pocket of space for the igniter just behind the instrument panel...

Velcro'd and ready to put back together. Playing with fitment I discovered that the igniter sits perfectly inside the lower lip of the fairing and between the lights.
I like this better as I was wondering if the igniter would end up chafing and rubbing against the back of the fairing stay behind the instrument panel with the bike/engine vibes.

Room to spare with a slim ballast...
Wires zip-tied. Nothing dangling. You'd never know it was there.

Midknyte, I purchased everything and hooked it up. The signals look great. After a couple of minutes they got really hot. what did I screw up? (Message edited by Mrrusk on April 02, 2008) |

The turn signal running lights? Yeah, mine get hot to the touch too. That's just the way they are. |

Hey Midknyte, what is the wire color/combo in your butt lights did you tap off of for your low lamp? Thanks Sath |

I spliced into the low/running light line of the brake light to power the low filaments of the new sigs. The brown wire of the wiring harness is your ground. If you get the same lights as I did, the ground wire line on them is the black w/ white stripe on it - but check the diagram that comes with them to be sure... |

Awesome post. Very informative. A few questions: What temp bulb did you go with? Did you only do the low beam light and do you THINK there is enough room to squeeze 2 slim ballast/ignitors under there, for both beams? It looks sweet and the night pics really show off the brightness. I can't wait to do this. 2 HID lights could be overkill, but I DO ride a Buell. Momma always said I was different. |
