Miles from home yesterday, went to start XB12R (04) and after red light went out pressed starter, engine turned over once and quit, dash needles swept and nothing. Pulled all fuses and relays to check condition of contacts, then turned on key and normal start. After a couple other stops on the way back to the house, while riding away from a light, engine quits, needles sweep, and check engine light illuminates momentarily, and just as quickly everything is normal again. Almost back and I see a buds bike at a bar so I stop for a malted beverage (might need those carbs to push that last couple of miles). Started normally and about a mile the Signal Dynamics volt monitor started to flash red for a few seconds, then returned to green. At home I removed the seat and checked the battery terminals, then removed them for a cleaning and check contacts points. Haven't gone out yet today........... Anyone else experience this or have any thoughts or insight? |

Check your ignition switch, mine had a wire come loose at 25k. It only has two screws to get it apart but you will need a pencil type soldering iron to fix it. |

Sorry, you will get the electrical portion off with the two screws, then you have a couple tabs to get the switch housing apart. Having a few brain farts from complete boredom. |

Mine has a tendency to cut out because the idle bottoms out....or so I believe. I've don't TPS resets, but she likes to settle in at 900rpm, and some times it falls too low and quits. It usually happens when it is hot though, it's a real pain in commuter traffic. |

Happened to me once and it turned out the battery terminals were a little loose. |

This problem has also been caused by the seat rubbing on the ECM plug, if you cycled the kill switch or the key it could be the Bank Angle Sensor. The battery terminal bolts will bottom out necessitating a washer on the bolts to make them tight enough. |

seat rubbing on the ECM plug It's an XBR not an XBS. LOOSE... BATTERY... CABLES... Definitely. Those cables gotta be tight on the battery, or else ALL KINDS of gremlins will bug you. It will seem like something different every time, but it's those damn cables. I think I finally got it nailed down, I tapped out the holes on the battery terminals so the threads would have a tighter tolerance, got new bolts, used dielectric grease on them, and lockwashers. It's weird because they will feel tight, but it's not tight enough. Make sure the ends of the cables are in full contact with the terminals. It will make the bike quit on you, at speed, needles sweep, engine light come on, etc... all you have described. Frustrating as hell, but easy enough to fix. I had the same thing happen to me. It was corrosion on my battery cables. Check the bottom of your contacts. |

Someone mentioned that the stock bolts were too long. When they felt tight they were just bottoming on the battery terminals and not securing the cables tightly. By adding a washer or two or, some accy's, they over came that issue. Neil S. |

Thanks guys, figured it was battery related, but battery cables were tight and connections looked clean. I sanded all connection points and installed new bolts when I put it all back together Monday night. Rode it a bunch Tuesday after I posted and all around town yesterday with no more incidents. |
