i'm headed back to the USA from my little China adventure in about a month to start a new job at eBay Motors in San Jose! working on building their parts and accessories business. i'll be in corporate housing for the first 60 days so i'll have some time to figure out where i really want to live. i'm leaning toward san francisco -- knowing that the commute time will suck, but that eBay offers a cool free shuttle. i'll try it out and see how it is. woohoo! i can buy a bike again soon - though i'm leaning toward a cute little scooter... Back to the USA, I guess California counts. Scoots are fun. I love my scoot.

Keep in mind, Scooters are a little more difficult to lane split with. Asbjorn |

why is lane splitting with a scooter hard? nice scoot, barker! china was cool, especially since i helped launch AMG Mercedes and got to drive them on racetracks all around the country...but its hard to be the first expat of a company. the company either goes overboard generous or stingy one-off. mine was closer to the one-off end of things when it came to benefits...and that got old. compensation was ok, but not being sure you're actually covered under the health plan is disconcerting when you like to play with motorized toys... ebay motors is a great gig, and will be an interesting new challenge. and yes, the comp and bennies are super - and the international relocation D |

why is lane splitting with a scooter hard? Wider and less steering preciseness at low speed (smaller wheels and CA has the reflectors between the lanes) |

Congrats on the new job. The comp better be good, SF is one expensive city. But then I am a country boy from the south, so expensive may be different to you than it is me. |

hmm, didnt know about the CA reflectors. doubtful i'd be commuting on it anyway - hoping to just have it as a hop-a-long for the city. the buddy looks really nice, barker, and there's a dealer in san jose - so i'll check it out. since i'm in taiwan right now, land of scooters, i picked up 2 very cute scooter helmets ok, maybe the comp isn't "super" for SF, because i sure can't afford to buy a place. but it'll let me and my dog rent comfortably. but then again, i hear that real estate is bought on stock money, not salary money in that part of the world! D p.s. random cool fact about ebay motors - a part/accessory SELLS every second. coolio, eh? |

Well, a scooter might be sort of handy within SF, but I'm not sure scooters are a good idea on the freeways between SF and SJ. Only has to be 150cc and up go go on the freeway. But legal or not, I wouldn't do it. I rode my XV920R from Daly City to Foster City for a few years. I would say SF to SJ is an exceptionally long commute, even for the Bay Area. I lived right in SF 14 years and found a bike to be a huge time-saver as far as parking and commuting. But rainy season, not so handy. I don't see that a scooter type vehicle would give you much advantage over a Blast, M2, or any other motorcycle. Only if you wear long dresses, that's the only thing I could think of. Sounds like a good gig, I've driven by the eBay HQ in San Jose. That's certainly a going concern. Best wishes and welcome ! (Message edited by jayvee on November 27, 2007) |

Barker, nice comparison, a real good read! Dora, benefits are something I have always wanted, I am reading up what options I have with the new job I'm starting. Uncle Sam takes care of me, but once I get married I need a nice family plan! |

jayvee - i just like the idea of a scooter. not really sure why. i really wanted to buy a few years ago, but just couldnt justify getting one since i had....5 motorcycles. now that i've sold 4 of them (before the move to china), i feel like i can get a scooter! stingaroo - benefits are more important to me now that i'm not so invincible, invisible, and fearless anymore neverenuf - i am dora the explorer! that doesnt change with a job if you want pics, there's ~10,000 of them here http://www.flickr.com/photos/dorafang/sets paintshaker - decided to stay away from the S1W due to legality....and indecision on my part. it is a beauty though. and if i wouldve bought it, no, i couldnt bring it back as it wouldnt have a real title or real VIN... bluzm2 - quite possibly. homecoming is a distinct possibility. also thinking about daytona and harley 105th... jlnance - you offering me a bike? scooteroid - i get the bed, you get the couch at frank's...or i'll stick aqua dots up your nose while you sleep! I'm very happy to be an ebay patron, you're welcome. Dook will be alright this year, that is until they start playing some real teams. I went to UNC for undergrad, so I consider myself a TarHeel. I did, however, go to Dook Law for my JD. |
