Howdy! I have been changing the Mobil 1 synthetic oil and filter @ 2500 mile intervals on my S3. I am beginning to think it is overkill, not to mention a bit expensive. We do ride in a very hot climate, most of the year - what would you suggest interval, and why? Cheers, Patrice |

Change it every 5000 miles like the book says. I've always just used normal cheep castrol 20-50 and it works fine. If it starts to turn dark before 5000, I would change it though. |

This worked for me !!! Have a 97S3T ... First 60K miles used dyno 20W-50 ... 60K mikes to 100,00 miles "PLUS" SYN3 20W-50 ... TOP-END has never been off !!! Change engine oil every 3K miles ... Use engine oil in transmission and change every 5K miles ... Only transmission problems were caused by my size 13 shift foot ... Only clutch problem was caused because "i" did not remove the clutch SPRING PLATE soon enough and replace with two steel and one fiber plates ... Over 80K miles on PRODUCT IMPROVED OEM Clutch ... Seems like changing the oil too often is doing harm to your engine Read http://www.sportster.org/tech/OilandtheHarleyDavid sonMotorcycle.pdf Especially the chapter: Oil change frequency Ralph (Message edited by xldevil on November 23, 2007) |

I change mine every 5000 miles. After break in have used synthetic. Recent rebuild showed no adverse wear, except for the hole and the piston and chunks in the cases(3). 1250 upgrade in the S1 after 21,000 miles still had cross hatch on the cylinders. Joe |

Ralph If changing the oil to often is not good than what happens when it's not changed often enough? If I could afford it I'd change the oil in all of my vehicles, cars and trucks included every 1500 miles like I used to in the good old days before crude was 100 bucks a barrel. Even today oil is still cheaper than steel. |

James. Whether changing oil too often really hurts the engine-I donĀ“t know. But what I definitely know: to change it that often is a total unnecessary waste of more and more short coming resources. Engine oil has never been better than today. I would stay to the MoCos recommendations. But if someone likes to throw his money away..... |

I'll have to agree. 1500 miles seems unncecessary. If you were breaking in the motor, or weren't running a filter at all, then I could see the reasoning... but with todays technology in oil and oil filters, it sure seems like just a waist. |

I do mine based on oil burn, time, miles and how a ride (drag strip, lots of twisties, on off the throttle a lot or HWY) soooooo basically I do it between 4 to 6k... |

I change oil everytime I change the rear tire. Seems about right. |

Thanks Dudes! I realized that the 2500 mile interval, is a holdover from motorcycling in the 1980s, when never used a synthetic oil. It is just a compulsion to change the oil so often. I am overly cautious about motorcycle maintenance. I am upping it to 5K oil changes. Cheers. Here are few pics of this Novembers ride in North Carolina
