Good news! BadWeB will be getting a brand new 64-bit, dual core 2GB RAM server. Site performance should improve noticeably for most everyone. Installing the new server will require that the site will be offline for at least two hours beginning as soon as this evening tomorrow (Tuesday, October 23rd) around 6 pm (eastern time). Also, the new server will be installed in a new/different physical location, which means that our DNS name server address will be changing too. So even after the server goes online, it may take some additional time for some ISPs (your internet service provider) to update their DNS name server records and recognize the new address. Until that occurs, we won't be able to access the site. One thing you can do to speed up restoration of access to BadWeB after the successful server upgrade and relocation is to refresh the home page, www.BadWeatherBikers.com . We are also getting a new internet comm line hookup installed at the new location by XO Communications. If the new internet comm line hookup doesn't pass muster, the new server and the move will be postponed until Verizon or whoever is providing the comm line gets it performing up to spec. So if the site stays up and running with no interruption this tomorrow (Tuesday, October 23rd) evening, that is why. I and/or Brian Case, our server administrator, will post status updates here as things progress or change. If you want to be kept apprised of this status, you can add this thread to your email notification selections. Do this by editing your profile and clicking on the "Choose" button next to the "Quick Board" topic entry. Then select this thread. You'll then receive emails of all posts to this thread. Thanks to the folks at www.westfifth.com for their hard work and attention to detail. They are one of the reasons for BadWeB's ongoing success and record of reliable performance. Ride, lean, smile, live! Blake (Message edited by blake on October 22, 2007) |

Due to poor support by XO Communications, the comm link is not yet good to go, so it looks like the server swap and relocation won't happen until tomorrow (Tuesday) evening (eastern time) at the earliest. |

Can you change Time To Live on the existing DNS records? Kicking it to 30min or so for now would speed up the DNS change for people. Just a thought. XO is still in business? |

Josh, I forwarded your suggestion to our sysadmin, Brian Case. Thanks. I'd be very surprised if he isn't up on that. Apparently some small local type ISPs just don't update their name server(s) no matter the "Time to Live" setting? I doubt the issue will affect many BadWeBrs, but there will probably be a few. For instance, if your ISP's servers are located within the ISP owner's house, you might experience this problem. |

FYI The following command, run at the command prompt on your windows machine, may help if you have trouble reaching the site right after the upgrade: ipconfig /flushdns |

The comm line is not yet good to go, so it looks like the server swap and relocation won't happen until this (Wednesday) evening (eastern time) at the earliest. |

Please avoid posting extraneous commentary here. I moved all the previous banter into its own thread up top. Thanks. |

Unfortunately the downtime just experienced was do to a line outage. We've yet to accomplish the upgrade and move. Will keep you apprised when that might happen. For now, it is on hold as we are shopping for a new comm line provider. XO Communications sucks. |

Okay, we are finally on schedule for the new server installation, site relocation and DNS change, and now even a change in internet communications line provider. This should commence tomorrow, Sunday November 18th after 1PM or so. If all goes according to plan the site should come back online within a few hours of going offline. The good advice provided above will be applicable.

In the mean time, I'll be washing and waxing the old Buell. Good luck to the folks at WestFifth Communications for a quick and painless execution of the plan. |

Blake, maybe post up your new IP address to use until the new DNS records propagate? It can take the DNS change up to 72 hours.... |

Current best estimate is 3:00 PM Eastern Time for commencement of server replacement, relocation, DNS move, and did I mention that this also includes installation of a different/new OS? Still Linux, just a different one. David (XB9), I'll post the IP here as soon as I get it from our sysadmin, but you may not get much advance notice. Anyone who is interested in obtaining the new IP to ensure immediate access to our new server (type the IP into your browser's address field and hit enter) might want to designate this page in their email notification options to be sure to get it. To do this...
- Edit your profile.
- Click on "E-mail Notification".
- Select the "Choose" button next to the "Quick Board" (13th down from the top)
- Select the checkbox next to this thread's title.
- Scroll to the bottom of that window and click on "Save".
- Click on any of the "Save Profile Changes" buttons on your profile editor page.
Done. That was a great suggestion Dave. Thanks! |

Our current IP is 67.153.116.5 which ends up converted to http://67.153.116.5/ when typed into an MSIE browser address field after hitting "Enter". As soon as our sysadmin advises, I'll post the new IP here too. |

The new IP will be 216.254.92.92 or http://216.254.92.92/ in your web browser address field. |

Blake, I've posted 5 times in the past hour, and only three posts, including the 'test' above have worked? The post I wrote in the Ducati / Buell thread had posted up as normal, or at least it appeared so at my end, yet it is not there. Another issue is I don't appear to be able to click back one frame without clicking at least several times. Also, the sites sponsor banners are not displayed. Instead these bars are showing i The website cannot display the page Rocket |

Ah, don't know what this means but every single click of the back button removes one sponsor display where that message I mentioned above is instead. Once the back button clears both sponsor bars on the page, then I can jump back one frame again, and repeat until the next frame and so on, until I arrive at the menu page several clicks later. Hope this helps. It means nothing to my computer illiterate brain. Rocket |

Good, we're back. I figured somebody'd be burning midnight oil and all would be well in the morning. Thanks Brian. All seems to be good on my end, like Rocket and XB9 said, no sponsor banners anywhere. No problem here with "back button" G5 PowerMac/OS 10.5.1/Safari browser Z |

Thanks guys. I too noticed the blank banners. Sean (Rocketman), What browser and version are you using? I'm still using MSIE 6. We've implemented, some time ago though, an advanced file compression routine to help reduce bandwidth and also provide much improved service to our dial-up and otherwise bandwidth impaired viewers. One side effect of that compression routine is to muck up the ability to use the "Back" button. You may still use it, but you will need to "Refresh" the page in order to get previous pages to re-appear. I noticed the same thing. I don't use the "Back" button much though; I hope others don't either, so the benefit outweighs the inconvenience. The reduction in bandwidth usage brought us out of the red and back in black. I'll check on your missing posts. That is a serious issue. I've not experienced it, so if you could double check and try to replicate it, that would be helpful. I may need to regenerate some of the topics. I noticed that there are some goofed up archives in the XBoard. Not sure what causes that, but regenerating the topic has always repaired it in the past. Don't you wish that life had a "regenerate" button. |

Our "back" button doesn't work either. I end up clicking back on the page name. Sponsor banners are not showing up here either. Haven't had issues with missing post. |
