Torquemonster, I've tried 'em all and the best I've found are the two systems I'm using now. The stock muffler can be sent to KD Fab and Kevin can make you a beautiful "drummer". Great sound, great performance and stock look only better. Kevin's a great guy and a magician when it comes to fabrication. My second system is the factory race header with a D&D slip on. Super bad sound but loud. Better performance than any slip on because the header tubes are longer with the race pipe. I didn't like the D&D full system because of exhaust leaks that you couldn't stop. I've been dealin' with exhaust issues since '99 and feel I know them pretty well. frank.

Thx Frank. I went ahead and bought the D&D full kit. Im keeping my eye out for a race header to cut that elbow out of the picture.
Thanks for the info.
Any tips on preventing leaks-besides proper installation? Dont know when Ill find a header.

Do you have contact information for Kevin at KD Fab?

Thanks,

Dave

TM, you won't seal all the exhaust leaks on the D&D. It's impossible. You'll learn to live with it. If you look at the picture right above your post you will see the full system on blackm2's bike. Notice the where the head pipes collect into the y-pipe. You can see the carbon streaks coming out around the pipe inlets. You cannot stop this no matter what you do. There is too much flex with heating and cooling to prevent this. It doesn't make any sound but requires that you clean it after every couple of rides it you want your bike to look clean. Bugged me too much. Plus I cracked the y-pipe after quite a bit of use. The factory race header setup is better and the D&D can is better than the factory race can. You will sometimes see the race header on ebay. I got one a few months ago for 200.00 including shipping. Great deal. It was brand new and never installed. I think the drummer is the way to go if you want performance, sound , and reliability. Kevin D. has got it down pat. He can build you a lighter, better stock muffler. You can see a picture of one at: http://www.kdfab.com/mike%20kiebler%20ST3.jpg. This one is jet hot coated sterling silver. Mine is jet hot coated black. Great muffler. Kevin is great to do business with and is very helpful. Give him a call. His number is (828) 324-9991. Ride safe, Frank.

I don't have any noticeable leakage in mine. All the pieces mate well together. It's been on there for a few years.
When I got the bike though, the previous owner said "...yeah, these bikes shake a lot so the exhaust likes to come loose, you just have to cinch it back down every once in awhile" Immediately I'm thinking, BS!!! Plus it would backfire between shifts. After a few hundred miles, sure enough it did come loose on the front head. I took it off and someone had used the OEM conical shaped gaskets which DO NOT mate to the D&D system, you must use the flat Screaming Eagles. Now it just growls between shifts

Cyclone, I'm pretty sure you can seal it...I've done it on my WileyCo when I had it on the Stock header..

I just used some Black High Temp Silicone Sealant or something...

UltraCopper is the best stuff for exhaust joints. Used it all the time on my smallblock Mopar header flanges : )

I've used the red high temp silicon RTV on all my exhaust joints. If you put it on right, it doesn't leak. Kind of a drag to clean off next time but it works.

Blackm2 states that he doesn't have any noticeable leakage. Really? That's not what the picture of your bike shows. It clearly shows that you have exhaust leaking around the joints where the head pipes collect into the y-pipe. I've never seen a D&D full system that didn't do this. I tried all the different types of sealant and it never worked. Sooner or later the exhaust leaks would show up just as pictured in blackm2's bike picture above. The D&D system is a good system not a great system. Tubers had plenty of challenges with exhaust issues but there are solutions. I like the factory race header with the D&D muffler much better. No leaks good fit with a sound that is nearly identical to the D&D full system (which I like a lot). The Drummer is still the best slip-on. Ride safe. Frank.

To my ear. Every aged exhaust system is going to show soot at the various connections. If you notice, I don't get under there and clean all that often. The black is on about a quarter to a half an inch of the pipes. Combination of soot and roadgrime? So, to my ear it is not noticeable, however photographic and chemical analysis may prove otherwise.

I never said the leak made a sound. I simply stated that the D&D system leaks(it is a good system). It does leak. To each his own. Not trying to discourage anyone from what they like best. I just want the facts put out there so that all can make an informed decision. Ride safe and happy Thanksgiving. Frank. See Buell.com for The Tennessee Turkey Ride November 25.
