My 05' blast has recently developed a whirring sound during mid to hi engine revs both at speed and while stopped. I originally thought it was gearbox related, but discovered today that I could duplicate the sound while stopped and in neutral. The sound is like that of a plastic bag in a strong wind... fairly loud as I can hear it clearly with my helmet on. Any pointers on where to look would be appreciated. Also, I have a stock air box/cleaner that I've checked for faults. None found. |

Maybe the CHAIN GUIDE PN 39394-00Y(2000 Parts Book) has broken and fallen into the Primary Chain ??? |

Welcome to the Badweb Ozzyflash! I would believe the noise is coming from your primary. Try adjusting your primary chain. If that doesn't work you should remove you primary cover and look for problems there. |

Alright, I'm compiling a list of the necessary items that will need replacement merely by the removal of the primary cover. Please add if there are any additional items I haven't considered. Primary Cover Gasket, Clutch Inspection Cover Gasket, oil seal for the shift lever, and replacement fluids. I'm thinking it will be less of a mess if I drop the Exhaust... so add in an Exhaust Manifold Gasket. Any further hardware items? |

If you take the primary cover off, and you have the tools available to remove the clutch and crank drive sprocket, champher the edges on the small plate that retains the stator wires, then put a generous helping of silicone sealer under the plate to keep the wires from moving. Also adjust your shifter pawl and check the shift drum retaining bolt to make sure it will not loosen up on you in the future. But do the easy things first, see if you cannot adjust out the noise first. |

If the Primary Chain has deeply worn into the SHOE,chain adjuster it is an indication that the Primary Chain has or is being adjusted "TOO TIGHT" !!! |

Thanks for the list of pointers. I'll order the gaskets today and dig into the project in the coming week. I'll post back with my findings. |

Can someone with a parts book verify the part number for an '05 blast shifter shaft oil seal. I'm fairly certain it is the same as that for the sportster,p.n. 12010... but I want to be sure before driving 50 miles for a 99cent part. |

So,,, I had a "duh" moment. After acquiring all the replacement gaskets to crack open the primary I settled down beside the bike to begin the work. Looking about the bike I noticed my oil drain hose hanging lower than usual. It turns out that my odd noise was the two drain hoses and mounting strap flapping about. After securing the hoses my noise is gone. Thanks for everyones assistance. |

We've ALL been there at one time or another! Glad it was a simple solution and thanks for posting the outcome. |
