Brad, Man if I was in Buell styling, I'd be pretty pissed off at what you are saying. You are getting seriously rude. I'll bet you did throw Christmas presents on the ground and stamp your feet in front of Mommy. And, also, you own a Triumph Sprint and you think you have taste in styling?? Bwaaahhahhahha! 'Nuff said, troll elsewhere Brad! |

>>>>I hope someone, in some design meeting at Buell, uttered this phrase regarding the design of the 1125 As I read that it occurs to me that few folks really understand the entire DESIGN process and are satisfied to think it's a bunch of folks sitting around figuring what they can get by with the cheapest. It'd behoove some folks to take a look at how design is really done. . . from inception, through the product life cycle, through obsolescence. There are many considerations, including the "where can we take this in 2 years?" and "how long can we keep it fresh?" that few of us ever see. Many folks who own Buells fail to realize how many times Buell has received really neat awards from the design community totally unrelated to motorcycles. . . Some of you may recall when Professor Harry Wirth first exhibited a Buell in an exposition of DESIGN . . . it was stunning and the Buell, along with the Herrman Miller Aeron chair and the Apple computer received some neat kudos. The Buell had much more impact than (thanks to BMW's throwing a fit as the sponsor) you'll ever know on The Art of The Motorcycle . . . you **DO** know the entire top floor was going to be dedicated to a Erik Buell production on the future of motorcycling, right? The intent was to have nothing to do with Buell, everything to do with "Design" and Erik was seen as "the one who could speak to it". Generally the discussion of design has been a restatement of folks personal opinions about what they expected to see. If you haven't seen the 1125r in person, you may want to withhold your chest pounding. Pretty cool stuff . . . now if it just had heated grips!

"Who do you call when you want a part for your 1998 Monster and find it's obsolete?" My wife would always call Jimmy Adamo for parts on her '87 750 Paso repo rebuild, he had all the factory numbers and contacts to get the parts the dealer just couldn't get on a 2 year old bike. What a great guy, R.I.P.

Its not rude to tell someone they have a burger hanging on their nose and its not trolling. In fact its difficult and uncomfortable to be the brave and honest one. I take no joy in my remarks on the fact the bike does not "photograph" well. I hope through my honesty that a solution is a result and the burger gets wiped off. I agree my Triumph is ugly, but I accepted it as a consistent theme of ugly in design and proportion. Same with my Duc, same with the Busa I Owned I never for a second thought that was a good looking bike, but it did look like a whole unit from front to back. I'm not bashing far from it at least that is not my intent., I'm trying to discuss the elephant in the room. I'm not saying the bike is ugly in person, I have not seen it. I'm saying the design is unclean in photographs and I think you will be hard pressed to find people that do design for a living that disagree. The the thread topic here is scoops, not me. |

Brad, sorry to bother you, but in your attempt to defend the bashing the photographs of the 1125r, (not the bike itself of course), you mentioned a burger hanging on ones nose. You mentioned burger twice. Do you mean a cheese burger? Perhaps you mean a bacon burger? Or a Brave Burger? Or did you want to say booger? Slang for a piece of dried mucus in or from the nose. Again, sorry for the question. I have no intention of impugning the credible nature of your post. (Message edited by bearly on November 13, 2007) |

In my opinion, this bike wasn't designed to be a looker.... it was designed for function. The larger front end not only makes it different, but it WORKS. I'd like to see an R1 or a CBR that is able to create a nice pocket for the rider to sit in. It would be best to actually read some old posts from Court and Anon that explain WHY the bike looks the way it does. Everything was designed to serve a purpose, and that in itself is amazing. Buell's are made to be different....... |

Brad - Sun's supposed to be getting a bunch in Dec and Jan. #1&2 will be "in&out" before anybody has a chance to see them. Mine will be in my garage within 2 hours of arriving at Sun's dock. I haven't even seen one in person yet, but all reports say it's better than any Firebolt. My 03 XB9R was the BEST bike I've ever ridden, much less owned. It's gone now and I'm Jonesing bad. Wiating to hear from Reed to find out if I have a VIN assigned. Z |

Maybe this post should be in another thread about styling but is has come up here so some might want to consider this; This new 1125R WILL be an absolute great platform to take anywhere you want to. When I bought my current 2002 M2 it was just what I wanted to personalize to MY own tastes. I really like full faired bikes and that is where I went with mine (see my profile)for picture. It had enough power, handling, durability and was different from most run of the mill UJM's. I will probably personalize my new 1125R after a while if I choose to and have a "one of a kind true superbike" with all the original attributes of my M2 plus much more of everything thats make a sportbike. I can't wait to get started. Aftermarket, I'll bet, is readying also. Bob |

Bob: I'd not seen that on the M2 before and you've done a dickens of a nice job. Ain't the M2 just a dandy all around motorcycle? No Buell connects me more with the entire "why I ride" concept. Well done and I'll be eager to see how you handle the 1125r. Court |

Delay....... Called Sun HD, ship date dropped from 16NOV07 to 21NOV07. Not bad, probably will miss my b'day but that's OK. It's almost here. Gotta find out Sun's holiday schedule and make room in the garage. I am so looking forward to break-in, riding a fast bike slowww. Heated grip kit and tour seat are in already, shop manual is ordered, waiting for printing to start. Life is Good Z |

"In 35 years of motorcycling the one thing I can tell you about Ducati is that they are not driven by engineering but by IMAGE!!!" Uhh, I thought Ducati is driven by race results?? Some of the guys here really are sensitive to any criticism of the 1125. I can understand that if you are a Buell employee who has worked hard on this project. I think Brad and I are similar in that we really want to see Buell (i.e. the underdog) kick ass. So at least in my case I find the looks a little disappointing or bland and was simply hoping for more. I certainly think the bike is a great performer and have commented so. BTW, I don't see what's so f'd up about wanting performance and looks. I do understand looks are subjective, but wanting to purchase a bike that looks good to the buyer is not similar to wanting your ass pierced. |

Adversity does bring out the best in some. But sorry boys, with Ducati it's all about image. I can't run with the mainstream of that crowd any more than I can throw on a doo rag and butt-less chaps. Just two sides of the same coin to me. You guys have their hook set way too deep. Not say'en they don't make some nice bikes but few appeal to me. I think some are damn good looking but I see where they have gone for looks over function in a few places (such as my previous comments). As for butt kissing, I'd say that I'm kissing up to Buell far less than you kiss up to Ducati. I'm a bit picky, the only bike in 20 years that looked almost perfect to me was the XB12R. The 1125 does not look as good to me but I still think it's good looking. Who are you to tell me what I think looks good? Your opinion is fine and right for you but dead wrong for me. And that's all that opinion is worth so you need to deflate your egos a bit if you want to get back to reality. And you've been told by others too. Your pushy offensive statements (butt kissers?) makes you look... well less than charitable. |

Btw my problem with the 1125 is the muffler. Love the old tail, scoops, fairing and all else. Well except the ugly universal plate holders that everybody uses now! But the muffler looks like someone ran over a Scotsman and his bagpipe stuck to the bottom. But every other bike has something worse. But I've talked to far more people who like the pipe than don't so I know it's mostly just my personal point of view. |

Notice how almost nobody can agree on what they like or dislike the most about the bike? Kinda tells me that they have done alright with the styling. As pointed out Buell does not make me-too bikes and as such it's going to stir people up in both directions. People are far more likely to write blank checks to the other guys styling efforts without realizing that they are. |

I still think the muffler is there for more than mere "muffling". It has the look of a profile filler and maybe a bit of aero function. So much attention was paid to air/heat management in every other aspect of the bike, I suspect there's some of that in the muffler as well. My 2 kopeks' worth.. |

I apologize for the butt kisser comment that may not be the best choice of words. here is my point. When I bought the 2006 Ulysses I had a list of things that I wish were a little better. Most here on this site tore me and others up for being negative, yet Buell has addresses every one of those items in the following years. The 2008 is afar better bike because those issues ere improved. The only issues that can be improved are the ones you recognize and talk about. That requires honesty. Again, I love Buells as proven over and over. I think there is more love shown by a drive to be better than by complacency. |

By far guys, if you ride much its "FUEL" LOL, but I'm sure what Court was referring to is the muffler and I agree with Rfischer it is most likely designed as a functional part of the whole package. I think it looks a little like a belly pan and I like it but I might consider changing mine for looks or sound if the stocker is way too quiet. Got to get it first to tell though. I just might not change a thing. Bob |

Some points well spoken Brad. Never would I suggest an honest opinion be silenced. Voicing our wish lists, concerns and outright opinions (as such) is a great thing. Bit of an overstatement? Ok, I'll give you some of that. My use of the word "all" in "all about image" was incorrect. I wasn't trying to imply that Ducati doesn't have good engineering, make winning race bikes or good street bikes. But their streetbike sales push is mostly about image in my opinion. Why stay with undertail exhaust and cooking riders when the under engine position dosen't and makes for a better cg. Why stay with the 90v twin and stretch out the riders when you could do like Buell/Rotax and pick the angle that meets ALL your needs and use balance shafts. (I could go on but there's no need). Because much of Ducati's deep pocket buyers would howl is why. Their need for those buyers to fuel their race program fuels a street bike sales program based on upscale image which the race program back feeds. It affects how they make/engineer their street bikes, sometimes to the good of the street rider and sometimes bad. Ducati is mostly image driven to make money. Buell isn't after that deep pocket status buyer (yet!) so they use engineering and nonconformity to fire up buying interest. Things like ZTL, fuel in frame, unconventional rake and trail, etc. We were talking about what drives these companies right? By being engineering driven instead of image driven I believe that Buell builds a product that actually fits more of the riding publics needs. But maybe not more of what it wants. Yet! All my opinion of course. Court the first thing to go on my 1125 will be the plate holder! As to the muffler I might not ever change it. As Rfischer said there appears to be more to the muffler than meets the eye, inside and out. 'Sides it's growing on me a bit. |
