ok, I'll admit, I am mistaken, but the point is is that both lights produce the same amount of light and nearly the same pattern, if the reflectors weren't so badly deteriorated I might be able to tell a difference. on a different note, can anybody get me the inside diameter of the reflectors. I'm kinda thinking that Optilux 1500 lights will just slide right in. | ||

That's what I saw when I compared them too Fritz. Superficially they look similar enough, but the reflectors are differently shaped. | ||

Silly thought, but... could you just cut some aluminum foil and fit it inside the housing following the contours of the reflector housing? Just asking... apparently the "S" models don't have this problem. My problem was that the lights were pointed down too low when I got the bike from the dealer. Now that I've adjusted them a bit I get plenty of light. | ||

Brian, if you do have that bracket that bolts to the magnesium fairing stay, I'd like to borrow it. That way I don't have to disassemble my bike immediately to start modeling up the new bracket. Thanks. | ||

FWIW, these guys have more info on Hellas than the Hella site: Rally Lights The 50mm and 90mm are made of magnesium. Just to get another discussion started ;+} Neil S. | ||

I'll get the bracket in the mail to you in the next few days Steve. I figured you'd rather not have to disassemble your bike, and since I happened to have the part....No brainer! I forgot to grab the headlight housing yesterday, It is an oval measuring 3.020in x 3.310in with a depth of approx 2.75in. The mounting plate for the light has a hole 3.25x3.5in in it. Both my headlights are dingy yellow. I bought bulbs from a local autoparts store. I barely noticed a difference. My buddy, also with a R, had the unfortunate experience of watching a friend of his wreck his bike in a parking lot. The outcome of that was him getting a new front end, sans forks. I can not tell you how amazed I was at his super clear lights. They were so new and clear and....new. I told him it was only a matter of time before he was back in my club. The bulbs were a temporary fix. I want redesigned headlamps. Back to the drawing board Buell. I am not gonna beat a dead horse, I don't want my new headlamps in 5 years. I wanted them yesterday. I agree with owners that think Buell knows AND HAS KNOWN for years about this issue and chose to sneak out the back door while we are still complaining about our vaginas bleeding. If Buell wont help me, then I can only help myself. Hellas..here I come. | ||

I talked to a Hella rep at the SEMA show in Vegas on Thursday, and casually mentioned if they made about a 75mm replacement assembly for a Buell Firebolt they could get quite a few sales. He gave me a ( I'm not really interested ) "Yeah, I have heard that." answer. | ||

I just had the headlights out on my Firebolt, so I could apply another coat of chrome paint, due to flaking. While I was waiting for the paint to dry I spotted a recently deceased leaf. The child in me could not resist. With the sun at noon, I aimed the lens at the leaf and POOF! The leaf almost instantaneously burnt. Hmmm, maybe it’s the sun that’s baking the reflective material and not the bulb? I was holding the lens at about the same distance as the back of the housing is to lens. | ||

I know I was told that the reason for the black piece around the headlights was to prevent the melting of the fairing, and I saw some burned paint around the headlight of at least one firebolt at homecoming..... However, the sun would have to be very low on the horizon to cause the damage at the back of the reflector where it usually happens, so I doubt that the sun is causing our woes. What kind of paint are you using, how often to you re-apply, and how good are the results? | ||

I've been using Dupli-Color Chrome Enamel. Appling about every year and a half. The lens was not directly straight from sun-to-leaf. There was about a 50 to 60 degree refraction so yes, it could be burning the back of the assembly. Try it, you'll see. Maybe that's why the responce is so slow. Brian, yes it came yesterday. *THANK YOU* That will help!!! Just to keep everyone else up to date... I have a meeting this week with the owners of my company. The one that makes the final decisions is all for us becoming a badweb sponsor, and offering the headlight brackets and other billet goodies. But is concerned with liability problems. So we'll have to also talk with our insurance company. Wish me luck!  | ||

Steve I know I would be happy to sign a liability waiver on the bracketry! There is certainly a need for the product as we have all seen. Having a DOT approved lighting option that works would be a huge benefit to all firebolt riders. As far as getting that to you...it was no big deal, it was just gathering dust in my garage. There are other products your shop could turn out too, but I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know. | ||
