Wow is right. I knew they juiced it up for the R model - didn't know they juiced it that much. Too bad the price is SO high that it will have no effect on the used 1098 market. |

Man, no denying that's one fine mutha$%#%ing bike. But I'd rather have a 1125R and $28K in my pocket. Ooo... the things I would do to my S2. |

But I'd rather have a 1125R and $28K in my pocket. Or two 1125R's, one for the street and one for the track, and still have 16k in the bank for tires and track prep. I will admit tho, if money was no object I would tear the butt hole out of that thing! |

Both beautiful bikes'.I paid the cost of ownership.I will not admit regret, though the maintainance is a lot of work.Engine mods are a LOT of work, can't overstate that. But the occasion to ride a Ducati superbike is very rewarding/special.Technology moves forward, they're a little easier to wrench. Stuff like that should be left to the guys who drive Ferarris'/Porsche/Lambos'. Not us working stiffs |

Why RR? The RR produces 200 HP thats with the race pipe, not steet. and 5 less ft lbs of TQ (85@10k the 1098 does 99@7.5k) It also weighs 11lbs more the the 1098. FYI it is not 1098cc. |

That is sweet! The only other bike that catches my eye as much as my 96 S1 is a 96 916. Damn I love those bikes. Rocket, you lucky dog. |

I am lucky, but I tell ya, early 916's are through the floor over here right now. I see them pop up for less than £3000 quite often these days, and I'm talking nice examples too. I can't really put that into an inflation related explanation in comparison to living cost in the US, as you guys would simply see it as $6000. The reality over here is £3000 or less is the cost of three 40 odd inch screen Sony LCD TV's, if that makes any sense, lol. Trust me, a 916 at less than £3000 is a bloody gift. Every bike fan should have the pleasure of owning a 916 for at least a thousand miles. It's very probably the greatest bike on the planet from a fast riders point of view. Not that I'm fast these days. Trust me again when I say the 1098 is a big girls blouse next to a 916 though. The 916 is a very involving experience, and one that gratifies like no other two wheeler when you've really kicked its head in. The 1098 anyone can go fast on without even breaking into a sweat. I guess Ducati intentionally wanted to attract sales from Japanese sports bike riders, because they haven't captured the magic the 916 has in abundance once you gel with one. A 916 is a very engaging realationship you work hard at to get the best rewards. Anyway Keith, did you catch this Brit gem I posted up the other day?

Rocket, I can only hope to suffer as you do one day. I ride my S1 to work EVERY day, would the 916 require constant attention? As far as the Brit gem, hmmm...I do like it (after all, it is an S1) the frame is unique but I wish he'd finished with a different swingarm to match the frame. |

I have never had a failure on my 916, and it's showing around 20000 miles now. Maintenance is really simple, though it's difficult to expel an age old myth. Belts changed in 20 minutes top, and it's so simple it's a doddle. Shims are simple too. The biggest hindrance to shimming is having to measure them with a micrometer, then find the right size if you need to adjust. Not a big deal if you have a selection of shims to hand. That said though, when you check them they're usually on the money and don't require anything but measuring to confirm they still within tolerance, then you put them back in. Yeah, there are a few things I'd change on that S1, including the swing arm. Didn't make reserve on eBay recently, and only bid up to £2850. I don't know what reserve was, but £3000 wouldn't be too much to pay I guess. Rocket |

If you've had to change them, how many miles were on the ones you had to replace? In the S1 picture, what's that hanging behind the exhaust? The oil? |

If that were my S1, I'd have no problem hiding a battery from view. It looks bloody awful where it is doesn't it. Glitch, no changing shim sizes since I've owned the 916. That's about 7000 miles and counting. Rocket |

quote:If I had 65k
Seriously . . . and this has been an on-going discussion with a couple pals lately. . . if you had $65K to spend on a motorcycle would you but that one? Frankly . . . I, and I chalk it up to age and the onset of Courtsheimers, would be inclined to spend even $10K on something like . . .
- Pristine Triumph Bonneville 650
- CL77 Honda 305 Scrambler
- Honda Sport S90
- Honda Cub 50
- A Road Thing style Norton
Kinda the things that brought me here in the first place. . . . I used to own a lot of new bikes, it was fun. Then, again as age advanced, I found paying property taxes, tags, insurance (I rode them all including my XLCR and XR-1000) I started reducing the flock. I'm getting the urge to add again . . . but NEW isn't doing for me what it used to. I suppose if I bought a new bike right now it'd likely be a Uly. As taken as I am with what the 1125r is, the utility of the Uly appeals to me. Add that to the fact that I've met damn few folks who aren't thrilled they bought theirs. But . . . . like a pals $500,000 car . . . I'm not sure I'd pop $65K on one bike. Eager to hear your logic. That taken with the looks or does the marginal performance lure you? Frankly, what would draw me to it is partially the same thing that sucked 3 friends into the F1 MV Agusta . . just damn good looks and great performance. . . they'd have bought at twice the price. |

>>>>Now that is a Bike that I would have put a deposit on and would have traded my bolt for. What's stopping you . . . they are in stock at the dealership that services my BMW. They have a boat load of Hyper-Motards, 1098's in all versions and the Superbikes. I doubt you need a deposit, you can just walk in, pay and ride out. The only difference is that their RR is $72,500 not $65,000. |

How about $8.495 for this 2006 Ducati Monster S2R 1000. Good as new, only 120 break-in miles. $8,495, which is over $3000 less than what it would cost to buy off the showroom. Warranty until 01/25/09. Completely stock. The Monster S2R 1000 is the ideal choice for anyone who wants the mean look of a street fighter with the simplicity of an air-cooled V-twin engine. The power of the V-twin engine combined with the trellis frame and 6-speed gearbox packs a punch into every corner. The most powerful air-cooled Monster is driven by the 992 cc Dual Spark engine, which delivers 95 hp and 69 ft. lbs. of torque. The inverted Showa forks and Sachs rear shock ensure confident handling and are fully adjustable allowing you to adjust your bike to suit your personal riding style and load conditions. The high performance Brembo brake system provides ample braking power. At 392 lbs., 56.7 inch wheelbase, 24-degree rake, Magura tapered handlebars and 5-spoke light alloy wheels the Monster S2R 1000 provides quick responsive steering. The Dual Spark engine was developed with specific objectives in mind: increased power, overall simplification, reduced working temperature, improved reliability and less weight. It is fuel injected, computer controlled and has two spark plugs per cylinder. The camshafts rotate on oil pressurized plain bearings and not ball bearings - which reduces the number of moving parts and aids heat dissipation. The Dual Spark engine gives more complete combustion and boosts power, especially at low and medium rpm. A reduction of the angle between intake and exhaust valves has improved the shape and reduced the volume of the combustion chamber, resulting in more efficient combustion, allowing greater compression and more power. Waiting for you to finish break-in.

I guess the Desmo sounds exactly as the true race version. If anyone has heard that your jaw would drop. I guess if you have the money to blow on the Desmo you really don't need to ask yourself if you really need it or not..... for the wealthy. For the 72.5 asking price you get all your service work for free for the first three years. Just to do valve adjustments you have to pull the engine. 16 Desmo valves, each with there own opening and closing rockers so your looking at 32 shim's. I wonder what that costs at 75 buck shop rate an hour??? (Message edited by bads1 on November 13, 2007) |

I will be the first to concede that few things sound as good as that Duc and a dry clutch coming through the concrete canyons of Gotham. I was in the old Ducati Flagship store when it was on 11th and TWO (in the same day) folks from the Hamptons came in and bought the priciest motorcycles they had and ask to have them delivered, citing " a friend is going to teach me to ride this weekend". Gentleman Jon can attest to the local imbalance twinxt sense and disposable income. Pucker. The reason I was there was just as good and the guy who took me, once he availed himself to my discount on a 748R, promptly got in his limo, left and left me standing. I made good use of the time. . . . |
