XBullet out and about at the 3%er's annual Buell-o-ween Party

HE'S UP!!!

We took care of that!!!

Then Nurse Shelly took over!

It was a great time, and it's good to see Brian up and about. He has got to have one of the most positive attitudes known to mankind.

What happened to Brian? I went down in May. Was layed up for a long time. Still can't run. But as soon as I could walk, I got back up on the bike.

Here's my x-ray :

What happened to Brian?

long story short, on September 9, i got into a tankslapper and ran out of road to correct it. 150 feet of sliding later i had a shattered L1 vertebra, spinal cord damage, a dislocated shoulder w/ nerve damage, and a totalled cityX.

it's less than two months later and i'm walkin', but i still have too many issues with my shoulder to be riding. gonna take a little more recovery, but i will be back at it.

don't have any scans of my xrays yet, but they cut me from bellybutton to backbone to do the surgery. pretty intense.

DJ -- i actually quit smokin' a week before the accident, but hey, every now and then ya allow yerself some little pleasures. : )

I've been curious, but haven't had the guts to ask, hopefully it's not an inappropriate question.

I know you were wearing full gear. Did that include a spine guard (back protector)?

Do you think it would have (or did) help? Or is it impossible to tell.

I think it's great how fast you are healing up. I'm a firm believer that way more than half of the healing process is mental, and it sounds like you couldn't have a much better attitude.

Mike, with spine protectors, it's all in how the spine is impacted. It's best just to prepare for the worst, and wear all the gear all the time.

the first A in ATGATT stands for All.

I wear my "race" gauntlets every ride even though the wrist strap and overlapping gauntlet
velcro flaps are kind of a chore to do correctly. I just remind myself why they are there...
The wrist strap keeps the glove on my hand and the gauntlet flaps keep it from flapping (and
keep bees out of my sleeves!) Is it worth the extra 30seconds? You better believe it!

Is a spine protector akward when walking around? yep. Do most of them make your back
sweat? yep. Will a spine protector keep you from becoming a parapelegic? maybe.
Is it worth it? Try losing the ability to walk even temporarily and then see if it's even
worth asking that question.

I had a spine protector in my jacket when I was hit. The doctors are certain that it
saved me from a serious spinal injury (I was my wife's air bag after all) the injury I
did get was caused by my pelvis shattering and the damage from that.

I wasn't questioning that to determine if I'll wear one or not. I just bought a very nice spine protector, and you better believe I'll be wearing it.

Outstanding! You have no idea how happy it makes me to see other riders out there wearing
full gear. I can't help but picture what could happen to them when I see people wearing
what I consider beach attire when riding. It
literally turns my stomach.

I was just trying to help by giving another real world street riding accident at low
speed (<40mph) where the gear came into play and did make a difference.

This website has taught me so much about gear. Next month you can look forward to my "How my life has changed a year after finding BadWeb" thread. It should be good.

I was with Xbullet when it happened. He was wearing full leathers but unfortunately he didn't have a back protector. Would it have helped? Maybe, maybe not, we will never know. Since it happened I wear mine every trip, even if I am just putting around town. Before it happened I don't think any of us would have thought a simple pass on a straight road could end up in a tank slapper.

stuff happens, when you least expect it so there's no reason to get on one of these fire breathing monsters without being dressed for the wreck. after a race...er ride through the so. cal foothills with a pack of hooligans I knew better, I just take it easy, and save it for the track.
