The V&H took a crap on me and Im ready to buy a new exhaust for my M2 (like, yesterday!!!) As much as I dig the sound of the V&H, I dont want to go with them again for fear of it breaking again. I have the stock header and will be installing a forcewinder fairly soon. So far, Im considering a D&D muffler, and the Kooks system listed in the classified section. I like it loud AND dependable. Is there any other muff I should be considering? Thanks, all. Travis |

Make sure you have the new updated Y-mount hanger for the exhaust. Wileyco made it mandatory for use with their updated M2 mufflers. I've got an updated Wileyco in the garage on a shelf, waver back and forth between selling it and running it on the M2. They have a decent sound to them, but not obnoxiously loud, but warmly loud in a residential alley at 5am, not enough to have the police called, but probably loud enough to get cussed at by sleeping neighbors, not loud enough to make them get out of bed and throw a coffee cup at you, but loud enough that if someone steals the bike out of your garage you'll hear them ride away on it, not loud enough that you'll automatically get a Daytona noise ticket on one, but loud enough that when you get on the throttle you probably will get one of those tickets. You do have to ensure that you keep the packing material fresh in them. Not sure if it's a 1,000 mile check or not like some are (which is totally nuts and rediculous to me to have to open up a can and check the packing every 1k miles), but probably definitely need to check the packing during an oil change if possible. I'm tempted to install a packing inspection cover to the side of the can if I decide to keep and use it (which I'm wavering back and forth on). |

Thanks guys. Im leaning towards this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ewItem&rd=1&item=180176934777&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA :IT&ih=008 But the item description leads me to think I need to keep looking, as I dont have the race header. guess Ill call D&D |

nice thing about the super trapp is no dealing with packing, totally tunable to what ever your bike is set up for and how ever you want it to sound like. the updated one is one piece built rock solid. i wouldn't ever put anything back on that was two piece. you'll be fulling around with it all the time trying to keep the clamps tight IMO. |

Hey Travis... ... that D&D should fit a stock header if it comes with the 90 degree elbow shown in the link. |

The 90 degree on the D&D will rust out. Coat it before you install. |

Never, The later one piece welded super trapp units are packed and it will burn through in time, how long to burn out I dont know. But expect it needing attention at 15k or so, I used Al's repack material it goes in HARD but it seems to work. +1 on solidly built I have grounded it on speed bumps no issues with it the studs and Y mount / bushings clamps etc.... "I used Al's repack material it goes in HARD but it seems to work." Heh... that's an understatement. I spent the good part of a day shoving that stuff in my V&H when the bag it was in tore when I tried to slip it over the core. I had one of the original SuperTrapps silencers (remember when they were called that?) sold in the mid-70's... I remember it was repackable. |

D&D does make a muffler nominally for the stock header: http://www.danddexhaust.com/catalog/2005/07/42612b .htm So I can't help but wonder what's the difference between their Race muffler, and their Regular muffler, if they both include the elbow ?? |

Travis (Torquemonster), here is yet another idea which worked on my M2 and is now hidden by my full fairing. I merely added a 2 1/2 inch elbow and now use an aftermarket car muffler of which there are numerous types. The one I use is a straight through fiberglass which sounds nice and needs no repacking and was $40 from Jegs or Summit racing supply. I also hung it from heavy springs to let it move slightly and not break exhaust header studs. I occasionally break a spring but little expense for keeping header studs intact. This lets me pick from many types of mufflers, painted like mine, stainless, chrome and carbon fiber, etc. I imagine you could get the elbow in stainless or chrome also. Works for me. Bob

"So I can't help but wonder what's the difference between their Race muffler, and their Regular muffler, if they both include the elbow ??" I don't believe the D&D for the race header includes the 90 degree elbow. |

I know the difference between the race header and most of the stock headers is the race had a 2.5" collector, and stockers were 2". Also, the race headers "turned the corner" with the collector facing the rear of the bike; stock headers (with the exception of my S2, grrr) had the collector facing down and to the side, in front of the oil filter. |

I have the older Wileyco slip on. The 90 deg bend has a welded on plate that bolts on to the muffler. 4000 miles on mine & I doubt it needs packing yet. I really like the mounting system, ( it does need the Y bracket ) & am thinking of fab-ing a copy for my yet to be mounted Buell Race exhaust. The Wileyco setup uses the stock Z bracket in back. I have the Ti model, all the other hardware is polished stainless, it weighs as much as a small bird, and the sound is pretty much as Mikej states. I never got a noise ticket, but I did put the stock muffler back on when I was getting home at midnight from work. At 30 in 1st, my Cyclone was very busy sounding, and in 2nd, the pop, pop, pop, seemed very loud. I work at a different time now, & have to go back to the Wileyco. The Stock muffler just doesn't scare deer. |

Raced home on my lunch break to measure the open end of my header...2.5 inches. However, mine points down and to the side-not towards the rear of the bike. Since the elbow is included it should remedy this. For the life of me, I cant see why it wouldnt work. Im wondering the same thing, Jackie... Maybe different guts for different flow? I have NO clue... DJ...the ebay seller said that it comes with the elbow. The girl that I spoke with at D&D didnt have any definate answers. Guess Ill call back to try to get a more savvy rep. Neil- I like the tunability aspect of the Trapp, but the price on the D&D is absolutely unbeatable. Plus, I know Ill like the sound Ill get out of the D&D. Thanks for chiming in though. Fingers crossed..... I appreciate all of you guys and your input. Thanks for helping to guide a wayward dullard! I love the Trapp. Nothing but praise. You can set it up how you want and is very well made. I don't think my neighbors or the cops w/ like either the D&D or the Force. |

I've got the D&D Race Muffler on the Buell Race Header...ZOMG, it's friggin loud!!! Mine did not come with the elbow (bought from American Sport Bike), but I didn't need it as I was installing the Race Header. I LOVE IT!!! BTW, the elbow on that ebay page (I've seen it before), is for the stock header, pretty darn sure. So, if you want loud, and it's the Race Muffler, then bite. =) (Message edited by brinnutz on November 06, 2007) |

I know the difference between the race header and most of the stock headers is the race had a 2.5" collector, and stockers were 2". I think this may have been true with the first race kits Buell offered for the earlier tubers (except the S1W), but by 1999, all stock headers (except for export) had 2.5" collectors. |

After ALL that, I logged on to buy the D&D this morning and someone else beat me to it. "I am Jack's raging frustration..." The search continues... |

There has been one of those same D&D Race Mufflers listed almost continuously for the last two months. They sell and another pops up, like gophers. I've been watching because I had a race header for a little bit, but never got it together. There will be an identical offering within a day or two at most. Just bite the bullet and "Buy It Now" when it shows. Oh, I forgot to mention, American Sport Bike has both D&D types for sale, 'regular' and Race, and guess what, their picture of the RACE shows no elbow. Might have to fab/buy that separate. Hi all, new to the board. I've had my M2 since August of this year. Absolutely love it. Just to chime in on the exhaust here. Mine has the full D&D race system. If you can swing it financially I highly recommend it. Not only the best sounding in my opinion(sounds like my '70 Dodge Challenger), the system is modular. By that I mean if you need to remove just the front pipe or the back pipe separately, you can do so. The two pipes then go into a slick little "Y" shaped piece(not an elbow) that has a crossover tube, which in theory equalizes exhaust pressure and helps to give the cool sound, then into the muffler. If you get the whole system though, be sure to use the Screaming Eagle gaskets, not the OE conical gaskets. If you like it loud, D&D is the way! Have fun! BTW I can email pics if you want, I can't figure out how to make the pics 800 x 1600 pixels they require to upload here. (Message edited by blackm2 on November 06, 2007) |
