Gents, I'm planning on doing the various 5k service stuff (oil and tranny fluid change, primary chain adjustment, head bearing adjustment, etc) and have a few questions: 1. Mobile 1 20/50 synthetic oil can be used in both the crank case and transmission correct? Or should I use something else? 2. The manual says to replace the gaskets on the primary chain cover and the clutch inspection cover. Is this really necessary? 3. Anything else I should change/adjust/inspect? Thanks in advance for answering the newbie questions. |

I've never had to replace the gaskets while performing this service. Just be careful while removing the cover so you don't tear the gasket. As for the primary fluid, I know some guys use the Mobil but I personally have always used the HD primary +. |

To be clear, don't use mobil one gear lube in the primary, it may cause stator problems. I've never heard of any problems from using mobil one engine oil in the primary. |

Anyone know what the real difference between regular Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 for V-twins is? Besides a couple bucks a quart? I'm using the V-twin stuff but don't know if I really need to. |

The mobil folks get pretty "squishy" when you ask them to explain, specifically and verifiably, the difference. The fact that they cant give me a scientifically proovable statement regarding the difference tells me everything I need to know. I'm sure it's better oil, and don't blame people for running it, but I just use whatever reasonable name brand 20w50 full synthetic I can find the cheapest. Its usually Castrol Syntec 20w50 if I am at walmart, and Valvoline 20w50 full synthetic if I am at the auto parts store. (I even mix them sometimes depending on whats on the shelf if I need to top off the motor... so clearly I live dangerously ) |

(and as a footnote to that last post... I don't doubt that Mobil 1 VTwin will be in much better shape after 7000 miles then Castrol or Valvoline full synthetic would be... and that could make the math work out to make the VTwin stuff actually cheaper to run... I just don't have the guts to leave it in there that long) |

"I just don't have the guts to leave it in there that long" "I even mix them sometimes depending on whats on the shelf if I need to top off the motor" Different guts for different people. I don't have the guts to mix brands. BTW, do you go the full 5,000 mile change interval? I do but not 7,000. Of course, if the cost difference is $5/ quart, the extra per-mile cost is .015 cents for 5,000 miles. I guess you can apply your savings toward a new fan or something. Only take you 46,667 miles to get the fan. |

I change at 3500 miles... knowing full well that the oil I am taking out is probably just a little over half used up... |

There are slight additive differences between the Mobil1 synthetic motor oil lines (as with all auto vs. motorcycle oil lines). A large push for the discrpency is the automakers push for greater fuel economy vs. the smaller motorcycle market for protection. Many motorcycle companies now specify a JASO requirement RATHER than the automotive standard use of API requirements. (Search wiki to satisfy your curiosity on the difference). Mobil 1 synthetic oil works great in the engine and tranny. Just follow the vis. and API ratings. Don't use any GEAR oil in the tranny unles the oil manufacturer specifically recommends it (like Redline, but they change there recommendations frequenty -- but it's still a great product line). For the Buell product line (except for maybe the new WC?), use Mobil1 15w-50 or any oil that has the correct "API - C" rating on it. The new WC bike "may" require a JASO oil? |

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Motorcycle_Oils.aspx There is a lot of info on the Mobil website, and if you check out the Mobil 1 Motorcycle Product Data Sheet, you may see some numbers that explain slight differences in their products.
