Running Rotella 15/40 oil Got the idea off of a KV posting. Engine seems to have better pick-up. Would oil drag be that different from 20/50? Temperature is 60's around here Using a Fram 2870A '99 M2 I think I got that Fram part # from OLD SCHOOL BUELL postings Recently read a posting with a different part# for Fram. It seems to be ok 3 questions: 1. is the oil filter ok to use? 2. the Rotella oil, does it come in 20/50? 3. if not, will I be ok with 15/40? | ||

i have seen cut aways of fram filters and wont use them on anything of mine, as far as the oil goes ???? | ||

My 0.02$ the oil drag is minimal unless oil is backing up in the engine. Oil that is too light will have film loss and metal metal contact. | ||

I dont recall the owners manual listing that weight / grade for operations in 60f temps. the hd synth is supposed to be 20-50 they recomend heavier dino oils in hot wx to boot others have used mobil 1 15-50 and say ok I don't know. I run HD syn3 and HD filters. | ||

+1 for Syn3 and OEM filters. All season riding (DC area) - 90+ summers, 30 or less in the winters (I wear heated gear). No issues. | ||

I've been using the 15w50 Mobil year round ever since my bike was new... 7 years and 40,000 miles ago. The only reason I prefer the 15w50 is I can get it anywhere, even at the Piggly Wiggly. No issues with it at all so far. | ||

h-d dyna filters are longer (more filtering medium = better filtering over long run).. | ||

I have had good results running the K & N filters. I use them on my Jeep as well. No finer quality/construction/flow IMO. I use one thats equivilant to the stock size, but they have larger filters available to increase capacity. | ||

yeah if you want to spend the money get a K&N filter or an amsoil, but if you want a good cost effective (cheap) filter use the long Dyna filter as said above more filterand more oil is a good thing to have with our oil cooled motors Blake | ||

Do you have a PN for the Dyna filter? U know how "confusing" it gets at the parts counter. | ||

I have also heard nothing but bad things about Fram. Even my Automotive school recommends against them. I use K&N in my car. They're supposed to filter down to some of the smallest particals of any oil filter. Since I change the oil so frequently in the bike (3k miles) I don't worry about the K&N and just run the OEM from the dealership, along with the OEM 20w50. | ||

I use Castrol Syntec 5-50 in everything I own.....From Bikes ,2, Tractors ,2,lawnmowers!!!!..Better price than HD synthetic 2...Great all season viscosity! I purchased a new BMW mini cooper in 2002. Casted on the valve cover was "Use Castrol Syntec 5-50w....The first oil change on the cars onboard brain was 20,000kms...The following was set at 25,000kms.. If they are that confident in the oil, so was I...I started to use it in every thing... Cant say I could leave any Oil in a motor that Long, but, every engine I have, seems to Love it dearly....Low consumption and clean operation... Just my 2cents on Oil....LOL...Hb | ||

For an extra 5 bucks, I will stick w/ K & N. I believe they flow better and filter finer particles than the factory filters. I also like being able to use a standard wrench to remove it. As I said B4, they also make extra capacity filters for the tubes. | ||
