Ok, enough fun and games...I want to thank each and every one of you Buell fans out there. You guys are what keep us going when we're staying late or coming in on the weekend, which happens a lot! So thank you VERY VERY VERY much for your support!!!!! And it's not bad to get to ride an 1125R now and then either! |

Somebody is going to have to give the tall guy on the right a zap with a defibrillator..very soon! He needs to stop working weekends and get some sun!

The tall guy on the right is likely one of the most important players in the history of Buell.
Ditto the guy sitting on the bike. He'd worked as a consultant to HD in the early 80's and met Erik. When Buell MOTOR Company was going he wanted to go to work . .but there was no $$ . . he went to work anyway. He sat in an improvised attic (sitting at a special drafting table Erik's dad made to be low enough to fit under the low ceiling of a 100+F Quonset hut in 1986 helping to design a futuristic bike. . he bought the LAST bike made by the OLD company and drove all night with his wife and baby daughter, while the paint dried on the yellow S2 on the cover of CYCLE WORLD to have it at the 1994 dealer show. When the first two S2's rolled off the line on at the NEW company he and Erik bought the first two . . . (some of you remember these two early bikes if you ever saw the 1995 catalog .) He's won many awards most of you have never heard about and was involved when HW (Buell owner who is a Professor and nationally prominent in design - yeah, I save all the photos) put the first Buell to be displayed as "art" in an exhibit in Chicago. . .
I could write 10 pages about 28 of the people in that photo.

Apart from him looking like the mad professor, why can't we have names put to the faces please?
I'd love to know similar stories as the S2 to who did what with the S1?
Thanks. Those pic's make Triumph look like NASA, lol. I think the Brit's lost the plot with 'health and safety' reg's. You'd be sent home if you came to work on the factory floor dressed like those cats!

Thanks to all who worked so hard! I'm sure it had its moments, but I could not be happier with my 05 9sx. Coming from a 29k M2, I know better then most what you actually pulled off even before the 1125 came out (from the CTO down to people on the line). You all deserve a ton of credit... Amazing stuff. |

The "Mad Professor" is David Ulicki one of the most amazing folks, at least in the Top 25, of the AMAZING FOLKS who have put Buell where the company is today.
The book is done and in fact . . . is being premiered to a group of International Publishing folks in the next week among the releases for 2008. A sharp person could find all the PR on the internet.
There are a couple key pieces yet to come together but it's been damned exciting to do and I ended up learning A LOT about Buell.
I used to think it was a neat company . . . I now know, and so will you, that it is a singular amazing company.
You will not want to miss the story of the S-1 headlight!
You'll also be amazed to find how old the bike Mike Samarjza is sitting on in that photo is . . . . yeah, you'll see pictures.
I also have one story that I need to tell that was intentionally left (I thought it pushed the boundaries of controversial and provocative) about David Ulikci.
It's the reason I sometimes chuckle . .. trust me (and I'd be happy to share the story in person) NOTHING leaves Buell that he doesn't think is right and the best that they can do. How much would you be willing to personally place at risk to stand up for your values. . . . as they say . . . REMIND ME TO TELL YOU SOMETIME.
Now let me get back to work . . . I am scrambling to add another chapter (not currently in on "Special Buells" . . those one-offs you've always heard about . . . but never saw. I'm going to try to see if I can beg to get it added. |

You know what I like, and I just pointed this out to my wife: Erik is not the guy on the bike, or standing or crouching in the front. Instead, he's somewhere in the crowd, not trying to be front and center. I like that. It says a lot about the man and the company. |

Erik's a funny guy . . . and until folks meet him it's tough to put into words.
He's as genuine and passionate as he appears. He laughs, he cries, he loves his family and he absolutely loves life and doing what he does. He makes friends with about anyone easily and listens carefully when about anyone talks.
He still sees Buell owners as friends rather than customers. It's been this way since I met him 20+ years ago. He came 600 miles to my house to do a Buell thing in 1990, the kids played together while he and I played bikes. . and he's no different now.
Anybody who knows him understands that if suddenly he stopped getting paid to do what he does . . . he'd just keep doing it.
By the way . . . lest you think he has a lock on it . . . Mike (sitting on the bike) is the same way . . Dave (The Mad Professor) ditto . . . Scot Ferguson . . . Abe . . . Laurie. . . Ron Janonis, Lars (man talk about a NEAT guy!) and if you want to see one guy who continues to amaze me find . . Mike Juliano in the picture.
These are amazing folks.
Erik taught them nothing. . . he just helped to funnel the talent.
Then along comes Jon Flickinger and started gelling all this talent and focusing it . . . .
I've told this story . . . but Flick earned my vote in perpetuity the first time he spoke to Buell owners. Erik couldn't be there and Flick, in his debut appearance, proved he fields the toughest questions and doesn't bullshit. He answers them. The guy was what Buell needed and at the right time. The icing on the cake is when Flick explained he'd be absent for a family function the next day . . . any guy who misses a motorcycle function for his daughters school event goes to the top of my list.
These, the entire darn group of them, are individually and collectively amazing. . . I still laugh at the days when the factory was about 18 people and used to gather on Thursday nights for beer, pizza and VCR . . . somewhere in that crowd is Chris Fiorini . . you'll be hearing more about him.

Court, as I tentatively put my toe back in to the Buell fold (yes I'm learning a lesson as age, as well as other things, continues to humble me), I thank you for your response.
I'm also going to be cheeky enough and ask that you have me a signed copy, if I'm bold enough to come collect. NY Bagels on me.
One thing's clear to me, and I've said so before on BadWeB. Several of my closest and dearest friends I have found through my Saab business. I like that I too serve friends rather than customers. Such philosophy was a large part of me wanting in with Buell ownership.
Maybe I've burnt some boats along the way, but us Brit's are great bridge builders.
Respect to all at Buell, and those serving on the outside too. This is my 10th year as a Buell fan, so yeah, I must be mad coz I'm still here. That's because Buell to me is more than a motorcycle.

Jones ship, the Bonhomme Richard, lies off Flamborough Head. That's about 40 miles from my place.
A small diving team and marine archaeologists have been trying to find evidence of the wreck for years. There was a lot of interest locally this summer, though I don't believe they've found anything yet though the team are very guarded and confident about a certain area quite close in. From what I read recently, they believe they will be successful eventually.
