Just curious what type of oil(s) will be approved for use with this engine? Since it's not an HD engine will we be free to use any quality oil that is available on the market and not cause any warranty issues? What viscosity is recommended? Will Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 be approved for use? | ||

No info on that yet. I'll probably still be running 15-50 though. I prefer higher viscosity oil for these engines. | ||

We're dealing with lower peak engine temps with water cooling vs the air cooled engines. Also sharing the engine oil with the transmission/clutch. | ||

The VROD uses 20-50. I'm pretty sure the 990 bikes use 15-50. I bet Buell sticks with 20-50 (for ease of service at dealerships). Josh | ||

I hope Buell "sticks it to the man" (HD) and just recommends the proper grade of oil without telling us we MUST USE HD oil. Last time I checked HD is not a petroleum company. | ||

I hope it uses the same oil and filters as my other three Buells. That would make things simple for me anyway. I tried to find what type of filter the Helicon is using? Spin on? canister? Metal Mesh? I don't see spin on on any of the pictures. So I guess it's more difficult than that? (Message edited by bearly on November 03, 2007) | ||

B&B, While HD may recommend using HD oil, using the proper grade and viscosity of other oils is acceptable. Despite what some dealers will tell you, using non-HD oil will not void your warranty. Bearly, The 1125R engine uses a replaceable internal filter (which Jose Q says shows it is clearly a Rotax engine). You can see the filter cover just above and behind the kick stand pivot on the rider's left of the bike. Hmmm...?? I wonder if that means my father's 1950s era International Harvester tractor had a Rotax engine? | ||

The HD line in manuals about using oil made for Diesel engines... and then telling folks to change it back to HD oil ASAP is laughable. They would rather tell people to use Diesel specific oil than just give customers some tempt viscosity rating and let the people decide. Why not just recommed ANY MC oil? Truth is that any motor oil having the proper viscosity will do in an air cooled crankcase. The 1125r will have to be MC specific. Anyway. Sure wish they would publish the owners manual and put it on line. Can't wait! Local dealer has four units inbound... two before Christmas that should be here in about two weeks - one is mine. | ||

Disposable element. If it's the type I'm thinking of. I hate those types. Messy messy messy oil changes with them. Blah. Ah well, that will be my only gripe with the bike then so be it. | ||

The disposable element filters are inexpensive, however. Seems to me most of us were wanting to make sure that maint costs were low. |
