I spend quite a bit of time in that area, but I live on the east coast. What do you need? |

You wrote me about the S1 I have for sale. I'm in Vacaville, about 1.5 hours North of San Jose, but I'm from San Jose originally. I lived there until I went away to college. It's a great city. Do you have any questions? (Message edited by nocompromise on October 28, 2007) |

decided to back off the grey market stuff....even though its the only way to own a buell in china. and now, yes, i'm considering a new opportunity in northern california. currently trying to figure out the personalities of all the little towns around there. luckily, i dont have to decide right away because there's some temp corporate housing, but i'm starting to think about it. san jose campbell mountain view los gatos palo alto etc... and....there's also a free shuttle available to/from san francisco -- but how weird is it to get on a "school bus" to go to work? is living in SF worth that commuting time? for a little more insight into what i'd be looking for - 32, female, single, MBA grew up in texas, have lived in washington DC, chicago, durham (NC), norwich (VT), lubbock (TX), milwaukee, and a few more. currently in beijing, china have a big dog (black lab), a dog park nearby would be optimal... like playing with cars and motorcycles *not* into suburbia/big box stores/kids/schools prefer a place with lots of restaurants (don't cook), boutiques maybe a warehouse-y, old factory, loft kind of neighborhood? thanks for any advice/insight/sources/websites/intros, etc. D (Message edited by buellgirlie on October 29, 2007) |

surprisingly, i found a neighborhood just like the one i'm looking for in milwaukee, WI last time (third ward) -- so it's possible. but it requires some local searching! NYC isn't out of the realm of possibilities - just not this time D |

There are plenty of apartments in the peninsula that would meet your needs. If you will be working in SF, I’d try to get as far north as possible though. SJ to SF is hell during rush hour. I stay in Los Altos and commute to downtown SF. It takes 30 to 60 minutes. It’s much faster on a bike because you can lane split. Go to an apartment search website and enter in your criteria. Most every town in the peninsula is pretty nice. |

"maybe a warehouse-y, old factory, loft kind of neighborhood?" You know this peninsula you're speaking of is one of th highest-cost places to live in the entire country right? Some of the places you just mentioned? Los Gatos and south central SJ is more affordable, not the north part. (Message edited by jayvee on October 29, 2007) |

>>>>Sounds like you want to live in NYC. ;) Come on . . . we have a glut of "starter" loft in Long Island City and Williamsburg that are a steal . . . I'm thinking you could get in a good 1 br for $1.5M! I'm still mad at Henrik for giving up the best loft and view of the city.

Court, if I'd had the foresight to scoop up some (surprisingly affordable) starter real estate in NYC when I was looking for a place to live about 10 years ago... |

Everyone Should live in San Francisco once in thier life. It's $$$, but so is everywhere else on your list. Are you talking about buying or renting a place? If you want to buy, have a huge bankroll, to rent. Not to bad. I've lived in San Jose and Sunnyvale. I didn't like either. Where will the Job be? Traffic is a huge consideration. |

I agree with Borrowed - from your description I think you should rent in SF, ESPECIALLY if you'll be working there. |

I lived in Alameda for a year and then got into Army housing on the Presidio (right at the south end of the Golden Gate bridge. Beautiful view out of the front window, I NEVER would have been able to afford it on what I was making as an E-5 if I had to actually pay rent on it. It was on Pershing Drive, closest to the beach, 2nd floor, 2br, hard wood floors, etc. I went back several years ago and they were bulldozing all of the apartments there. kind of sad. |

One of the best things about living in that area is highway 1. North or south of the city is a road everyone should get a chance to ride on a warm sunny day with no RVs slowing things down at least once in their lifetime. Even on my old KZ750 that was a great ride. I particularly liked the 1 north from Marin county. |

Dora, I'm in Castro Valley in the East part of the Bay Area. Mountain View would be your most economical (I think) choice of the areas you mentioned. Fremont is a good spot too. Close enough to San Jose. (Message edited by jon on October 30, 2007) |

I used to live in clayton, near concord. ASBN is in San Leandro the first monday of each month. I bet you could find a room to rent in someones home. I lived in a rented room for about 3 months in concord. I believe it was around 350, plus utilities.....rex the fellow that runs livermore aprillia is thinking of renting me a small studio for 750 a month plus utiilities, since I am in california almost everyweek, in a hotel. rex |

How do you like your natural disasters? We just had a mild earthquake in San Jose and the non-Californians are all scared. During the quake I remember mildly debating whether I should move away from the windows if it got much worse. I like my natural disasters to hit w/o warning but most people like warning like with a hurricane, tornado, etc. |

That was no natural disaster...more like a coffee stirrer. I'll take the quakes over anything else. |

Agreed, which is why I didn't actually move away from the window. I was merely pointing out that it is something to consider if you relocate here and aren't used to it. Most of the new to California people here are freaking over it. Me, I can't sleep knowing tornadoes or hurricanes are on the way. |

For all of the things you posted, City living in SF suits you almost to well. SF is the nations leading pet friendly city, they have tons of parks, bajillions of places to eat, and you don't have to own a car! everything is reachable on foot or bus. Buell's are practically made for SF hehe, I take mine up to the City all the time (I live in San Jose) On the other hand, San Jose has some suburban areas to it, but downtown is very nice and has a good selection of places to eat and is decent with pets, and its costs less Palo Alto- friggen really expensive but nice Los Gatos- very expensive as well, but better with pets, 1 or 2 street downtown Mountain View- kind of spread out and downtown is pretty much 1 street |
