Is that what the instrument panel is called on Motorcycles? Anyway there is this terribly annoying metallic rattle in the dash of my bike. I took the flyscreen off and tightened and wiggled everything I could find. Nothing seemed loose so I think something is vibrating against something else. It seems to get a little bit quieter as the bike gets warmer. On a side note my speedo died on the way to school just now. It started working on its own again just before I shut it off. Sorry I did a quick KV search and didn't really find anything. XB12Ss by the way 2006. Thanks for any suggestions. | ||

It's always hard to diagnose a bike over the net. I had a real bad rattle on my bike too. It turned out to be two things at once. Really had me confused for a while. The most common cause is the horn mount. The horn is mounted on a double spring cantilever that often fails. In my case, I also failed to properly tighten my front brake caliper after installing new pads, and the noise was not unlike the loose horn. Had me pretty confused for a while, that's for sure. Might want to check your steering bearings as well. Usually a "goofy" speedo means an intermittent short somewhere. There was a good thread on intermittent shorts some time ago. I found my rattle. It was the key ring. Funny as it is now, it took me several rides to find it. It was just a clip-on thing, so I could clip the single bike key on my main key ring when I took the key out of the bike. Sure made a racket though. | ||

Put a louder pipe on it. No more rattle. As for the speedo, take out the sensor, wipe it down, put it back. That has worked for many of us. | ||

I was going nuts over a rattle under my flyscreen. After tightening everything it was still there. It took me a month to find out I had a small pebble that had gotten back there. It was rattling around like a spray can marble. I felt so stupid for not finding it sooner. | ||

Same thing happened to me. It was the horn mount. It broke. Made myself a new one out of a stainless steel ruler! | ||

Thanks for all the suggestions. I know it is hard to diagnose here but it has been there since I got the bike and it drives me nuts. Plus it is really loud and embarrassing. I think people hear it and proceed to think my bad ass scooter is a piece of crap. I will let you know if I find it. | ||

My headlights rattled, I applied RTV to the attachment points, let it dry-no more rattle  | ||

Once it was one of the headlight assembly's every other time (5) its been right after the wireform clutch cable holder breaks and rattles against the header. | ||

Assuming the speedometer assembly is attached in a similar fashion to the firebolt's, check the rubber grommet that are used in the mount holes... Mine wore out and the metal stocks were clanking against the mount. As for the speedometer giving out... Did both your speedometer and tachometer go out, but the info lights stay on? If so check the ignition "barrel" wiring, although that applies much more to firebolts I imagine... But its worth looking at... | ||

My '08 Firebolt has developed a "Buzzing" noise that sounds like it's coming from the dash area or below it. It's only got 850 miles. No idea yet whats making it. | ||

my speedo mounts were worn too. Me being BROKE, i used aluminum washers clearanced for the tabs (you'll see when you look) to take up the space, still works great, been on for about 4K miles. Also as said before the headlights make a LOT of noise. RTV BAYBEEE |
