I always try to stay in gear and watch my mirrors almost obsessively at lights. I always think someone is going to do that exact same thing to me. I guess I hope that if I find myself in this type of situation I will have a few seconds to react- Just long enough to gun it and get out of the way. In fact in the MSF course I took the instructor called it staying in your get-a-way gear. I do hope this guy is OK, it looks like he took a pretty good tumble to say the least. | ||

I'm in gear with the clutch in until traffic fills my mirrors at every stop. Until I actually see the car stop behind me, I'm always scanning the mirrors. You have to have a plan on where to go to. Sometimes there is no avenue for escape. Scary. | ||

hehe- yup...the getaway gear.... I remember that from RE. I am obsessive about vehicles behind me at a stop too. Getting rear-ended does that to you... I lost my 66 mustang that way. At least it forces me to reduce that chance now... The worst is stopping in the road to turn left into a neighborhood without a traffic light. | ||

Almost happened to me this last weekend, Ford F250 had to pull to the side of me to stop. His front bumper stopped beside my rear footpeg. From My mirror, it looked like he was going for the turn lane. Quite a pucker factor when I realized that wasnt the deal. | ||

almost got run over by a tandem axle dump like that, looked in my rearview and saw that he had his brakes locked up an sliding sideways, quick glance around and shot across, trucker missed everyone too, just shook me head and kept going, but scared the hell out of me, have to stay on your toes and pay attention hope everyone got out OK. | ||

I would say its illegal to remain in neutral while stopped in most States? Its is up here!!!! That extra time it takes for you to drop it in gear could mean the difference in being alive or dead. | ||

I've always kept it in gear until I know that I'm not about to become a grille ornament. Usually, I'll do the rear brake, only and in the one time I had too get the hell out of the way I did a fast scan like Ceejay and bolted through the space between the car in front of me and one in the left turn lane waiting for the light to change. The Yukon I was dodging away from then ended up smacking the crap out of the little mazda that I had been behind and I ended up half dropping my bike across the fender of the guy in the turn lane as the struck car jumped forward and pretty much cut off my ability to cross the intersection. The driver of the Truck was arrested, at 2:45pm he was legally drunk (he'd just stopped for a few beers with lunch) mazda guy was claiming whiplash (at least I think so) and the guy I fell across wanted a new paint job saying my bike had torn up his fender. Funny, my bike only had a slight scratch to the plastic fairing (suzuki katana). So, yes, keep it in gear and watch your mirrors. What's sad is that if that driver had swerved instead of braked, that wouldn't have happened. You can see at what point the brakes were applied. The driver of the truck made the wrong evasive decision... He was probably rubbernecking the traffic stop to top it off. What a prick! | ||

Slamming on your brakes is almost never the right move to avoid an accident. I have toyotasupositaphobia ( reasoned fear of a toyota ramming up my butt. ). Telling a deputy that got me out of a ticket once. He was tailgating me, & I changed lanes, made 2 turns w/out slowing down, and rolled through the 'hood downhill from mine at a steady 30 mph. The posted speed. I thought it was a bad driver, then a nut job, & didn't realize it was a Deputy till he spun out through 2 yards & hit the lights. On a Suzuki GT380, not in the same league as my Cyclone. That video freaks me out. | ||

I was hit from behind on the freeway. Going around the turn, the car in front of me started to spin out on dry pavement, probably drunk. I slowed down, looked in my mirrors, saw no one behind, and went to hit the turn signal to change lanes, when bam! I never saw the car that hit me, it only took seconds. Needless to say, I'm now somewhat neurotic about cars and trucks behind me. I cringed watching that video. | ||

Looks like the bike rider made a bad move too. You can see him put his other foot down and stand up just before impact. He was going to abandon the bike and jump off the side, but didnt make it. Edit: Upon further review, you can defiantly see him stepping off and trying to get away. | ||

I think we should all make a mental note of this incident. When there's something to gawk at on the side of the road, stay on the alert for drivers not paying attention to the road. | ||

I usually turn the bike a bit at a stop so the angle of reflection out of the mirrors gives me a straight shot behind me...also allows you to start getting out of the way should something happen (nothing so far...that movies shows what dumbasses are really out there). As for when there is something to look at...I stay away from wackers staring at the thing...hell I stay away from everyone at that point. It has served me well when the brakes get stomped. | ||

I tap my brakes at lights till I have a car stopped behind me. I tend to stay one one side of the lane to give a cager a direction to dodge. I used to have the Kuryakyn Panacea (blinking) taillight on my Sporty till a wiring problem fried some LED's. Truly obnoxious at night. I spent the $200 on it after a cager rear ended a bike in my neighborhood. Kid was stopped at a light behind a pickup truck in broad daylight just about noon. Cager didn't see the bike, pickup or red light. Friggin' gruesome. A little vigilante justice on the accident scene would have been justified in my mind. Doubt the idiot ever spent a day behind bars. As long as you're sober, killing a biker is a $50 fine. Damn shame our motorcycles are invisible to motorists but not to police radar. | ||

I live in a tourist town, so I'm always alert. I, too, tap my brakes constantly, just a good habit now. Although I don't think it would have helped him. You have to be 100% when riding. Anything less and you should really stay home. | ||

The other thing I hate is being in the right lane at an intersection and having people squeeze by to make the turn. That burns me...these inconsiderate f**ks get so close. I block 'em by hugging the curb now. | ||

I think the driver of the truck was drunk. They had plenty of time to swerve into the empty left lane but made no attempt to do so. Well, ok, drunk or old. I hope the biker is ok and that they park whoever was driving the truck UNDER the the nastiest jail they've got for a very long time. Bob | ||
