Can any one tell me how to visually identify one from the other? People tell me that all S2s were fitted with Marchesini wheels but mine look identical to those on my 2000 X1 - which I assume to be Castalloy. My S2T is a late one (396/398) and was built in April '96. There are certainly no Marchesini markings on the rim as I have seen on earlier bikes. Thanks for any help. |

I believe there might be an "M" on one of the spokes which designates it as a Marchesini. I will check mine tonight and let you know. |

Yes there is a "M" cast on one of the spokes of each wheel and a "Marchesini" sticker on the outside lip next to the tire. |

From the wheel people:
quote:As for the wheels, Any Buell aficionado would know that there is a visual difference between the Marchesini wheels and the Castalloy. The differences are that cast into each spoke is an "M" for Marchesini and a "Buell" for the Castalloy ones.

Simond, you own 2 Buells, one being an S2, in a foreign country where S2s were rarer than good teeth. I'd say that makes you an aficionado as well. (Message edited by buelliedan on March 02, 2005) |

I suppose that I was expecting a more marked difference between the two wheel manufacturers. They seem so similar in all other respects. I was also trying to pick up some spare wheels for track day use and wanted to know what I was getting. Thanks for the info Dan/Court. |

Thanks for the offer Court but it will probably be just as easy to pick up some over here. I haven't got any dates fixed yet and if this year is anything like the last couple they could just sit in my garage unused instead of in yours! I'll keep it in mind though in case I have trouble in the future. Cheers Simon |

Simon, Though they look identical in most respects other than labels, the Marchesini versions are typically about 1 lb lighter per wheel. The Castalloys appear to have a smoother finish, and it would not surprise me if they used a different casting alloy or process. I would not be surprised to learn that Marchesinis may have greater casting porosity, but I have no evidence of that. From what little I've gathered over the years, the switch at Buell was due to supply issues (i.e. cost and delivery) and not quality issues, but again, I have no evidence of that. I'd say you're definitely an aficionado! Al |

Just for my curiosity, how much heavier are PMs than Marchesini wheels? Are PMs given to flex at high speeds in LSR racing? |

I can tell you first hand that the PM's are tough. I've jumped my bike hard enough to explode the bottom out bumpers in my fork (damn railroad track crossings). Wheels are still round and true. I think they're close to 2 lbs heavier each. Most of the weight is in the hubs...the bolt-on adapter plates are solid aluminum. The cast wheels have hollow hubs. |

From the spring 1997 (Volume 1 Issue 3) issue of Battle 2Win comes this chart of wheel weights and sizes, comparing the Marchesini, Castalloy and PM wheels.
Of course the PM's referenced in the article are the 1995-2000 style PM's. For those unaware, Battle 2Win was THE bible for Buell motorcycle enthusiast's put out by Reg Kitrelle. I, for one, sorely miss Battle 2Win! 1313 |

Fireman Jim, are you using PMs for your LSR bike? Stability opinion? Results? I'm looking at replacing some carbon fiber wheels (on a non-Buell) and want heaviest practical wheel with as little run-out as possible for the application. |
