Odie, how'd you strip your wheels? I'm considering powder coating mine red. Thanks. Mike. |

Might be easier to find someone with the silver wheels to swap with. Most powder coating shops provide stripping services as well (chemical and/or abrasive), but that's obviously an added expense. |

Rubber, this is a sore topic for me but here goes....Have been powdercoating things for a few months and everything has turned out great, except my wheels. Usually you can powder over things that have been powdered already. Not my wheels....Usually you can rough up the old coating and new powder will stick just fine. Not my wheels.....Usually you can put a coat of paint over old powder and new powder will stick just fine. Not my wheels.......When all of the above fails you just beadblast everything down to bare metal and new powder sticks to it just fine. Not my wheels. I paid $50 for a gallon of "De-Kote" from Eastwood which removed the powdercoating from the outer rims of both wheels like magic. The centers are not powdercoated; they are painted with a healthy layer of primer underneath it. It took me, literally, 2 weeks to get everything off of my wheels and down to bare metal. I spent many more dollars on paint remover from paint shops, etc. I have heard from numerous sources that there is magnesium in the wheels which would explain the powder not sticking. It would stick to the outer rims just perfect, but not the centers. I know you can send your stuff out to a pro and they can do it but I don't know if they use specials powders, etc. Maybe that's why they call them pro's!?! All I know is is that a two day job (wheels off, bearings pressed out, wheel clean/prep, new powder, bearings pressed in, reassembly, tires mounted/balanced) turned into a two week anger session. I actually did want the outer rims to stay silver but it would've been too time consuming so I was just going for all mirror black. I'm happy with them now. I sprayed the centers gloss black after polishing the outer rims and then taped them off. Holding up very well and looks great....anymore questions just ask. Later, Odie |

Rubberdown, not a problem. It started as a fun project and turned into a nightmare...... Spyder12s, depends on what it was. I'm getting ready to do my shifter, brake pedal, levers, idler pulley bracket, primary cover, cam cover etc. and don't plan on doing anything but a good prep. If it is just paint I usually just blast it to be safe and get everything off of it. When I did my "Grater Eliminator" I took it down to the bare metal as the casting process left some imperfections. After much sanding and some filler here and there you cant tell it was ever cut, sanded, or anything. I like to get things as perfect as possible. Later all, Odie |

Lonexb, the stripper from Eastwood cost me $50 and then I had to spend around $30 more in additional paint removers. I spent another $20 in Dremal attachments to get into the tight places. Paint I already had. The time spent was the most expensive portion though. What a goatrope!! Odie |

I checked with a local powder coater to do my rims. They would be $50 each, which includes blasting and powder coating (non-metallic colors). At most, if any machine work would need to be done, it would be $75. I checked another powder coater and his rates were the same. That is for doing the bare rims. Stripping the amber might result in the $75 a piece. |

Don't forget you will need to get the tires taken off, take the rotors and sprocket off, get the bearings pressed out, get them powdercaoted and then, after having purchased new bearings, have them pressed in, after having purchased new hardware for the rotors, put them back on, tires mounted and balanced, and then put it all back together. Hopefully the tire dude doesn't scratch your new wheels!!!! |

I forgot about those expenses. I'm actually going to have mine done when I take it in to have the black bearings replaced with the orange (service bulletin) so aside from that additional mounting hardware, I get off kind of easy. |

Hey that be MY scooter! Thanks for the praise Typeone. It's a 9 as evidenced by the silver frame. I imagine a 12 would look pretty sweet in this color combo as well. I had my wheels powdercoated at a place in Wisconsin who is not a sponsor here. Cost was $75 per wheel and that included having them stripped. Turnaround time was one week from me to them to me. Email me if you'd like the website of the coating place. |

That does look nice. My plans are similar. I've already converted everything on my 9R to black. I've got the carbon chin and oil cover. I want to get the extended carbon hugger and carbon left and right scoops. I was thinking of polishing the outer lip to match the polished swing arm/frame, but after seeing yours, I think all black will look fine. |
