I just bought some carbon from the buell catalog. When it came in and I opened the boxes it seems very thin to me. Has anyone had any experience with carbon from different sources, if so whats your opinion on this. |

Carbon isn't thick, it's a fabric. It takes many many layers to get what you'd think of being thin. It being as strong as it is, it could probably be even thinner. I've seen all the raw materials to do carbon fiber work, and a friend of mine (Black_Sunshine) made a flyscreen for me. It looked thin, it is, but I also stood one foot on it, it bowed, but never broke. That's why racers like it so much, thin, light, strong. |

Ditto...thin=good. It is probably 1/3 the weight of the part you are replacing. Most of the pieces I make are very thin but very strong. For example:

Back in the old days (tube frame days), the X1 tank covers made out of surlyn were approximately .150" thick, with the Carbon Fiber extreme X1 the carbon fiber tank cover was approximately .030" thick. Carbon fiber should not be thick unless it has MANY, MANY layers of weave. 1313 |

"How about making some for the rest of us??" Will is not interested in producing or selling CF bike parts commercially. If he were, he'd be sponsoring the site and advertising all over it. He'd be free to do that, and you'd be free to ask him to do that, if he were a sponsor of the site. As it is, both are prohibited. Trojan sells CF parts. American Sport Bike sells CF parts. If you want to inquire here about having some CF parts made for you, you need to talk to one of them. Thanks. FYI... For strength or stiffness to weight, woven CF fabric is at best equivalent to and easily inferior to high strength aluminum alloys. But it is costly to form high strength aluminum alloy into complex shapes. If you can straighten out the CF fibers comprising the woven CF fabric, then you can get some amazing strength and stiffness to weight performance in a CF part. But unidirectional CF lamina can be difficult to work with, and it isn't as aesthetically interesting/pleasing to most people. |

Blake's right. I'm not interested in selling CF parts, just sharing information and showing off my XB. I have neither the time or the operation to do so. And, yes I would hate to fit anyone with the "prosthetic" limbs that I make for a living. |

Discovery had a show on not long ago where a prosthetics expert came in and showed how he made carbon legs/feet. It was really neat the way he used a vacuum bag system and a gel type resin to form the prosthetic. |

I know that guy and he is out in Oklahoma City. He is a good Prosthetist and does some pretty cutting edge stuff. That is exactly how I am doing my stuff as well. |

If anyone is looking for some Cf stuff, Al at www.AmericanSportBike.com has some really awesome stuff. As Blake mentioned. Very high quality. He is working on some CF sliders for the Frame Pucks as we speak. |

And a right side air scoop, and an XBR undertail, and a chin cowl center section, and a taller XB-S windscreen (that's way overdue, I'm doing the final trim on that this weekend and will turn production on asap). I wish I could spend more of my days doing the part development. But transacting orders, doing POs, researching customer requests, specials, etc. consume much of the day. Most of my product development activities happen on weekends or at night. I spent more time on Badweb when I was working in telecom than I get to now that I do Buell stuff for a living!
