Actually the "red headed" deal came from a night when they decided to take me someplace in a feeble attempt to impress me with, get this...MEIXICAN food in Milwuakee. We walked in and they tell us it's a 45 minute wait to be seated. Martin was sporting a red beard and hair, and wearing a leather bomber jacket. I was in a blue one-peice Aerostich with an American flag on the pocket and carrying a "square" helmet with water and comm lines hanging out the side. I hate to wait. Ergo, I saw opportunity amongst the yuppish therein seated, called the group to attention and explained...."My Soviet friend is a guest in our country. Although he does not speak english, we are involved in an effort to raise funds that will be used to support a fund to jointly educate soviet and American children on space, as a peace initiative. I am going to ask him to walk around with this helmet and would appreciate your support" Note, i did not ask for money. That was the high point of a 24 hour period. Later that night I was drug into a tasteless event I dubbed (the story was trashed for being too "non-PC) "Wheelies for the Homeless" as he tried, in vain and before a group fo folks watching from cardboard boxes at 1AM, to teach me how to wheelie. A bit later was the "incident" on the on ramp with the CBR and the Sportster. We thought we were getting a handle on it when we were arrested the next morning. It's been a long journey.....wish you guys had been here back in what some call the "good old days".  | ||

Maybe that person was referring to the front part of the frame shearing off, which is deliberately designed that way for safety. Someone with knowledge please elaborate. | ||

Awww geeez. I've crashed hard twice on one frame and still race it. Dcmortalcoil is right - one of the Buell patents covers this specific issue - The frame is designed to break outside of the tank in the case of a bad crash - reduces risk of fuel spill. Don't know if that feature might have gotten lost in translation to Hulley's office mate?? Patent # 6,484,837 Motorcycle frame having integral fuel storage unit and break-away steering head Abstract: The present invention includes a motorcycle frame that has a steering head and a fuel storage unit that is adapted to contain motorcycle fuel. I think a fracture would mean complete separation, whereas a crack is only a partial fracture... | ||

Court, Of course there is good Mexican food in Milwaukee (and many other places for that matter). I'm pretty sure the place you are referring to is Conejito's Place as I remember Martin talking about it. I have experienced Conejito's many times with other Buell cohorts and have never been disappointed. Unfortunately I didn't take in Conejito's during my recent stay back home in Cheeseheadland. I guess there were just too many other fine eating establishments in the area that I have missed since moving South. To keep in topic - XB frames cracking - How utterly absurd! I find it amazing just how far some people will go to put down something that they feel is a threat (and rightfully so) to their brands 'superiority'. 1313 | ||

You'd be surprised at the things you hear people say about Buells. You'll hear talks about horrific crashes, and Buell reps pushing their "liability release" papers and quiet "settlements" on the victims. Or pistons shot after a season, or constant belt drive failures(chain drive people are weirded out by belts)...and yes...indeed....even the HIGH SPEED WOBBLE. Anyhow...maybe at the beginning these things were an issue(then again...probably not), and maybe the Buell Blast sets a bad precedent as to what a Buell should look/ride/feel like...But...from what I've read, modern Buell's are bulletproof. | ||

Uttter crap man! I hear the same bullshi5 about a buell being unreiable and the like. Well I',m here to tell you I just rode from New orleans to Detroit for xmas and no problems what so ever! 15 degrees no problem, rain no problem, nasty slush no problem and 2500 miles round trip no f ing problem! People who spew this crap really make me mad as they nothing of what they are talking about! The buell is a great bike, and in my opinion the best I've ever been on. Art | ||

Damn, I thought my step dad was crazy for riding his BMW k1200lt to Detroit in the teens, but your knutz on a buell! his beemer has heated everything and a big honking windscreen. I'm from ANN ARBOR, you from Mich too? BTW I'm up this late because I cant stop thinking about this bike!! | ||

Yeah, they are supposed to have a full length video coming out soon also. http://www.teamx-treem.net/ They used to ride ricers and still have alot of products for them on their website. I wish their website had more pics of the Buells though. | ||

I think you guys are quibbling over terminology! The XB frame, as I read it here, does indeed crack and separate at the steering head. The point is that it doesn't do this in normal use beause of a design flaw. It does so in the event of an accident of a severity that would have a terminal effect on any bike's frame, although being bent like spagetti might be the result on other bikes. I'm reminded of the first "modern" car I owned that had a "crumple zone": a 1986 Toyota. It had rollers at the aft end of the engine to encourage the engine to avoid the legs of the occupants in the event of a crash. Nobody said,"Don't buy a Toyota. Their engines break off." | ||

Only because they didn't have a Toyota discussion board back then. Some further clarification from a structural analyst who for some confound reason sees fit to quibble a lot. To an engineer an accurate description of a mode of failure, whether intended or not, is a matter of grave importance. A crack is not a fracture. A crack can lead to a bigger crack and ultimately to a fracture. But the difference between the two is not trivial. | ||
