If I'm in Germany, pretty much any pilsner or helles on tap (the stuff at Andechs monastery outside Munich is about as good as it gets...). Otherwise, the stuff coming out of my kegs in the basement (been brewing since 1985). But, the local breweries, Red Hook, Hales, Maritime, Widmer, Big Time, Elysian, etc., sure make great Winter brews. |

1. Any FREE beer 2. Favorite US beer Icehouse 3. The real (Czechoslovakian) Budweiser 4. Pretty much any German bier (Berlin better be stocking up for my trip in January!), don't really care for the Hefenweisen, but when you have no choice... 5. Best Canadian (eh?) beer I've had Molson XXX - 7.3% alcohol!!! 1313 |

Miller Genuine Draft has been my favorite for awhile now. Over the years I've liked Grain Belt Premium, Budweiser, Leinenkugel, Black Label (really cheap, really good, I believe it's a Canadian beer). |

hey 1313: they're exporting czech budvar to the states now, under the name "czechvar". more bitter than the home-stuff, as it's overpasteurized, much like pilsner-urquell. only reason they never could is 'cause a kraut came here in the 19th cent. & started a brewery with the german-name for budvar, "budweiser", and well... the rest is history. patent laws and what-not. i love budvar when i'm in the czech rep., esp. if it's tapped/propelled with ambient air as oppose to CO2. gambrinus (also a name hijacked here by a distributor in texas) kicks aas when tapped ambient. i used to drink about 8 litres every night after work, a coupla years ago in bohemia. ran a ski/snowboard schoool there, way out in the mountains off the carpathians. great people, great beer, great runs, dynamite women. great hells angels in bohemia, too. very cool charter who know how to enjoy "pivo"!!!!! i haven't been able to touch booze of any kind for almost two years, now, ddue to megadoses of antibiotics/antiparasitics, but stateside i was always a beck's , dos equis and rolling rock man. all very very clean, no-headache brews, esp. beck's. I'm surprised there isn't more anger and flaming here than a discussion of God on SACBORG!! Stone Brewery - Pale Ale (to share if I don't know what the other party's tastes are) and when I want a true, "anti-lite" beer - Arrogant Bastard Ale. It's quite bitter (as it should be) and dark as well... roofing tar ...besides, they sponsor a couple race teams. Website has a truly wonderful opening page disclaimer: http://www.stonebrew.com To view the Arrogant Bastard Ale site, you must first agree to the following: I am of worthy stance in the jurisdiction from which I am accessing this page to access pages containing material of Full Frontal Arrogance. In consideration for the permission to view the Arrogant Bastard Ale pages, I indemnify the publisher, the service provider and the Stone Brewing Co. from any insults, insecurities, and ego damages incurred by the viewing or retrieving of such materials by me. I acknowledge that the material contained herein may be contrary to the multi-million dollar ad campaigns conducted by large brewing companies I may or may not have been fool enough to believe in the past. "Quote...Guiness and it has to be hand pumped from a keg. Preferably in Ireland...he, he......mind you its stout, lager is for wimps and apprentice beer drinkers....people with taste drink real ale...I think Blake would even agree with me on that one!!" Mark- one day I am going to come out there and you will have to show me, I have heard it is a different mix than what they send here. I have to go there one day. |

as i mentioned re: central european beer, hand-pumping allows a much different rate of aerobic effervescence than CO2. taste is absolutely better. anyone who thinks ales are better than lagers and pilseners haven't sampled both in their native anvirons... |

Somebody (can't remember who said) there is no bad beer just better ones. I think the beer has a lot to do with the time, the place and the people. Some memorable ones for me, in no particular order. Fosters ( and I dont particular like it) at the 2000 homecoming at Lake Lawn Resort, when I first met a bunch of you guys. Heineken drunk on a 45 foot catamaran moored off the Great Barrier Reef, watching Nigel Mansel win the an Indy Race. Unknown Mexican beer in a Mexican bar in West Wendover with the Elves while Woz does what he does best negotiating a deal on the food. Fat Tire with Susan W, Henrik, FMJ and Grizzly after shopping for a bunch of hungry Elves. Unknown Beer in an Italian bar in an unknown town in NC on the first day of "The Running the Ridge" adventure with some new found friends. |

what no one likes a ten dollar case of Natural Light? If I have money though I trek over to canada and buy a beer made by guiness called Killkenny. It is a lovely amber beer, not sold in the state of Michigan Hard Corps |

Any beer that is not a "light beer". Especially free beer. If I have to buy my own I like Michelob, Miller High Life or Pacifico. Not in that order. Killians red is also a favorite. |

"Dragon's Milk" is very good, and very hard to come by. 10%, black but not thick, very rich. |

I must preface this endorsement by saying I've not touched the stuff in over 10 years. But,,,back in the day -- I lived in Germany for 10 years: 1. Bitburger on tap or in the mini bottle (stube bier) 2. Konigsbacher 3. Konig Ludwig Dunkel 4. Heffeweissen nearly brand indepent 5. Eichbaum tied w/ Warsteiner |

I know I stated a preference for Guiness hand pumped from a keg. However, the bestest beer is ANY beer NOT from France. The French may be able to make great wine, but they are completely clueless about beer. |

For commercial beer: Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout - North Coast Brewing Co. (Ft. Bragg, CA). Rich but not sweet. Heavy, creamy head and a smooth, silky texture that's hard to beat. My favorite beers, though, are the stouts and porters I make. That's one of the real joys of homebrewing...you make what you like! |

The French may be able to make great wine, but they are completely clueless about beer. I agree. Although during my holidays in France many well-chilled Kronenbourgs went down without a grudge from my side. |
