I put about 100 miles on my S1W today. It's been down for the count for about 3 years now, waiting for me to get off my ass and get it to the machine shop to have the cracked header welded and braced.
Damn, that bike is fun. Even on 8 miles of twisty "fresh oil and chip" roadway....can you say "pucker-fest"? Ugh.

Very cool. The last Buell bit I have left is a spun cam bearing crankcase nobody wants. I'm tempted to get a latter M2...but remembering all of the unscheduled maintenance of my many years of S1 ownership gives me nightmares

The S1 I restored/rebuilt with my dad in 2018/2019 gave me an oil pressure light the other day. The sound the valves started making (before I killed the ignition) indicated that it wasn't just a faulty sensor .
I suppose I should thank it for doing it a few hundred meters from my home instead of kilometers.
The M2 I owned for a few years was relatively trouble free. No issues in 12.000 kilometers, though the base gaskets had started to leak by the time I sold it.

I've got a M2 coming up on 120,000 miles. I never thought it needed any unnecessary Maintenace. I do need to do something about the rear brake.
That is unheard of. Mine blew the shock and forks every 10-15K miles. Broke the cylinder head boss off at the front mount. Needed isolators periodically. Ate a charging system or two. Killed the original ignition sensor. Nearly ate up the original oil pump drive gear. Spun the original crank. Leaked from the base and starter gaskets. Broke the negative battery cable early on. Broke off a couple of clutch cables. Broke a belt before I went to a chain drive. The race header broke three or four times at the collector. The original starter solenoid died. A few sets of wheel bearings. (The fronts were kinda small, and the rear outer on the sprocket side killed itself occasionally). It blew the crank gasket. One of the oil pump lines got rubbed through. I'm sure there's more. I had a Suzuki DR650SE used over similar mileage, and aside from a twenty minute service every 7 to 8K miles, I hardly touched the thing.
