OK... today I took the Cyclone out to the Harley Dealer and drank their beer. I got home and decided to trade tanks with one that I recently painted from a 2000 Cyclone. Easy peezy right? WRONG... I removed my 99 tank and drained the gas and started swapping over the gas cap but the screw holes weren't lining up. They ALMOST went in but I didn't want to strip them so I took it all off and drilled out the gas cap bolt holes just a bit and thought that this would do it but no... so after F'n around trying to figure out why it's not going on I took it off again and turned it upside down to see if it fit flush in the recess and it's just about 1/32 too big for the 2000 tank. I couldn't believe it... I don't know if Buell changed something from 99 to 2000 but why? Has anyone else ran into this problem? | ||

I haven't heard about anything specific to those years for the Cyclone, but I've heard about people having plenty of trouble getting gas caps to fit just right due to the tanks expanding and contracting slightly from absorbing the vapors in the gas over time. How long as yours been drained? My old speed triple tank used to swell so bad that I had to make a whole new mount for it just to be able to attach it. Then it was hard to get the seat on because moving the tank back 1/8" pushed the seat back and the latch wouldn't line up anymore. | ||

" I don't know I bought a bunch of Cyclone parts that probably sat for years. no doubt the tank has shrunken. it's only about 1/16" but it's enough for it not to fit and I can't force it to fit.... I thought about lightly sanding the inside of the countersunk area but I don't know how thick is the plastic. I don't want to bust though or weaken it. I might go back and look again and heat it up with my heat gun and see if it expands enough for the gas cap flange to fit. THANKS | ||

I've had the filler opening shrink on a couple of tanks that sat without a ring for a few years. I was able to gradually snug the screws (over multiple days) and get it to stretch. Still working. | ||

If I do it again, I'll put some gas in it and let it sit for a few days before I try to install the cap.... I had no idea that these plastic tanks shrink. | ||
