"I will go back to my statement earlier. Are you willing to allow us to pull the plug on you and bill your family for life support costs?"

Why would you need to bill my family for life support if you already pulled the plug? And yes, if I am in that bad of shape, with little hope of recovery to a somewhat normal life then by all means, pull the plug on me!!

Freedom is not free when your neighbor pays for it.

Court, Wise Words and the reason I posted the following:

Freedom and take responsibility for your actions! The life you improve may be your own.

You hurt yourself, be responsible and pay for medical coverage to protect against your losses. Someone else hurts you they should have been responsible to have adequate insurance coverage to handle your expenses. If not, you sue and take their house, wages, first born male child, etc.

The only thing this does is place responsibility where it belongs. Sounds like a dream like "Walgreen's Perfect" but insurance or filing for financial responsibility should be made mandatory in all States and proof of insurance should be presented when you receive or renew your Drivers license and endorsements. Bottom line: No insurance = No license.

I don't know what Canada is like now, but that was the requirement in the Late 1970's. Was one of the great things their one term socialist government implemented that made the Country a better place to drive in. It also helped the young new drivers as all were treated equal until they started acquiring tickets and accident reports.

In the USA, regardless whether you own your home or are renting, you can link your insurances so that an Umbrella Liability policy will cover all your activities in the event of a law suit against you.

Personally, I have my homeowners, auto, 2 bikes and my umbrella policies with one company. I get a really good rate for the combo package and in the event an incident occurs, the policies all go into play for a seamless transition via one agent. Every incident that I submitted to my insurance carrier was fully expedited and required no real leg work on my part to get satisfaction and that included two lawsuits against me. Remember, I lived in CA for 30 years and everyone sues out there to get ahead in life. LOL FYI, I won both times compliments of an engineer like Blake being the Jury Foreman. Quite simply, they were able to overcome emotionalism with logic.

So what's left to make this a perfect world...How about LEO's making the right call when writing up your incident. I personally believe that this is a major source of our problems as motorcyclists.

It appears to have become way to easy to say the rider was in the wrong and let the cage drive skate on their portion of the financial responsibility. Incidentally, the States with the Socialistic No Fault Laws have proven the error in their ways much to the chagrin of their residents. Better to just stand up, be responsible and buy adequate insurance coverage. You stand a much better chance of physical and financial survival all the way around.

In conclusion, ride responsibly on the street. Your physical and financial future depends on it. Am not saying, don't have a good time. Just save the antic's until you are in a remote location, away from other traffic, and you will stand a better that average chance of both enjoying your bike and avoiding tickets and accidents.

I know this "epistle" will draw flames and agree that many of them have merit. This is just something that I have practiced in my 46 years of riding and have been able to avoid a lot of bad karma. YMMV

So many different ideas going on here but just thing about this one:

Greg indicates that Motorcycles generate such a small percentage of insurance premium that its insignificant in the grand scheme of things. I would think that the insurance company would have to charge a premium so they can make a reasonable profit for their shareholders return on equity. REMEMBER, they are For Profit Corporations that bear a responsibility to the shareholders.

That being said - the insurer must charge a premium assuming it will be paying for future losses, this underwriting is based on its previous experience with that particular class of business it would like to write.

You also have to realize that an Insurer only has three sources of income.

1. Premium Dollar
2. Investment Income generated from the Premium Dollar
3. Claims Expenses

If one of the three is affected the the other two must compensate. For example - If the investment market is good and interest rates high then the income from that source will off set premium dollar therefore lower premiums can be justified. It also works the other way in that if interest rates are low then more premium has to be charged to get the same rate of return for the investors. Of course if claims payouts are up and investment income low then your really going to see a major increase in Premiums.

Therefore, some years an insurer may have good luck (very little claims) writing bike insurance so you should see a drop in rates but if the same insurer had bad luck then your going to expect to see sharp increases. My advise to you is stop complaining about the rates and shop around. In an unregulated system the competition my be very favorable. In a regulated system like most of Canada you will find competitors very close to each other. Automobile/Vehicle Insurance is Mandatory here in Canada and you must prove financial responsibility when getting a Motor Vehicle registered, even though a good percentage do slip through the cracks.

We can debate the above for hours on end as to what is right and what is wrong, but when it comes down to it how many business/corporations stay in business to operate at a loss or just to break even - NONE that I would want to invest money into.

As for Helmet/safety laws I think that is you care to go helmetless then medical benefits should be restricted or denied. Back to Canada where medical is primarily picked up by the Provincial Government Medical Care Systems. We have helmet laws and I guess that would be mandatory considering the kind of medical system we have. If you are a vegetative state or require major surgery you will be taken care of.

Another good point and I can not remember where I read this but someone made the comment that "Wearing Helmets can Cause more injuries?" Good statement but what the person failed to mention was that by wearing a helmet how many fatalities were prevented.

"And yes, if I am in that bad of shape, with little hope of recovery to a somewhat normal life then by all means, pull the plug on me!!"

Not gonna happen. Should you ever find yourself in such a predicament, please know for certain that you will be sustained interminably, your brain hardwired concurrently to the Buell parts network and high speed internet. Best for you to accept it now. Resistance will be futile.

"Hal" of the Buell parts network: "Dave?... Dave, what are you doing?"

Dave S.: "I'm getting a set of isolators sent to Blake in time for his track day, sending Techlusion modules to a bunch of Buell hot-rodders, ordering a new stock of Drummer mufflers and Dark Horse Moto sliders for my customers, arranging a local track day, developing more new and successful ways to sell more Buell motorcycles, and continuing to be a glaringly positive influence in all things Buell. Why do you ask.

Excessively staunchly held beliefs can make idiots out of most people.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Hey, as of today, the daylight hours are once again increasing in duration in the northern hemisphere. : D

Condolences to our friends in Aussieland and in other lands South of the equator. :/

This is so scary, I told my wife the same thing & I mean it. Screw that life support crap, pull the damn plug now. I also told her if I was ever completely paralyzed like Christopher Reeves was then she had better do something, smother me with a pillow or whatever or I will simply whistle my wheelchair right into lake michigan or out in front of a truck.

It's easier than that, Dyna. Just have a living will. Remember the case in Florida where the husband wanted his wife removed from her feeding tube after 10 years, but the parents and then the state intervened? The whole mess could have been avoided with a living will.

My wife and I both have living wills... Then again, she made me promise her under no circumstances would she ever be allowed to be sustained, indefinitely in a vegetative state.. I've never broken a promise to her.. and never will. Take that for what it's worth..

For those who are serious about the pul lthe plug deal, please put it in writing via a living will. Otherwise the issue may be very problematic.

Dyna...Forget the Lasik for use on the computer. Is primarily for nearsighted folks and you will most likely still have to use readers.

Note I said nearsighted and not narrow minded. Big difference and I don't perceive you as being either. LOL

Dave's wife serves pickles at a fund raising dinner for Dave, after he is reduced to a brain hooked up to the Buell computer.

"There's something funky about these pickles!", a number of guests remark. "Really?", Kandie says, "I just bought them last night. Oh, no! I grabbed the wrong jar!"

Dyna blinks a new topic, "My ultra reliable X1". A technician knocks on Dyna's door and his wife answers. "Has Dyna been practicing with his blinking software?", the technician asks. "Practicing? He's been posting more than before the accident!", his wife exclaims. "Oh, no!", the technician says, "He was only supposed to practice with the beta software! It's not reliable!" Dyna sits paralyzed but blinks rapidly.

Isn't all this kind of morbid around Christmastime?
