Is it just me, or does the Buell gas cap $uck? I mean, it's not the easiest thing to take off, especially if your hands are cold or you're still wearing gloves. Does anyone make an 'improvement' for this contraption? I wrestled with this thing for about 10 minutes trying to get this Rube Goldberg device off............

odd... i was thinking the same thing recently...

mine used to come out with ease, now i have to twist and tug on it to get the damn thing out...

does the rubber need to be replaced periodically? can it be?

yes, the rubber part can be replaced. you need hylomar besides the new rubber part but it's pretty easy... check the manual.

I know this becasue my cap was stuck and I couldn't remove it. After messing around for a long time I finally rounded out the large plastic piece on the underside. And you guessed it, have to buy a whole new gas cap! If yours gets stuck, remove the outer ring, screws and cap as a unit and seperate them on your workbench. I think the rubber part shrinks if not constantly immersed in gas.

I had trouble with the cap on my Cyclone some time ago. What I discovered was that the aluminum tank fitting was building up a burr from the clamping of the cap latch. I cleaned that up and it worked slick after that. You can also adjust the clamping force of the latch by turning the locknut.

The lock nut is the thing, I had trouble getting my cap on last fall after painting the tank. I loosened the lock nut on a whim and found I could adjust how tight the cap goes on.

I'd recommend loosening it up as soon as it starts getting difficult so you don't have to replace the whole thing as Bob had to.

Problem is that the rotational forces are transmitted through the central hole in the plastic piece in there. And all that goes through that little elongated hole (circle with flats on either side). Once that hole gets hogged out (easy since the hole is so small and the plastic is relatively soft). I took mine apart and used some washers and O-rings to transmit the torque. Works much more reliably now.

"I think the rubber part shrinks if not constantly immersed in gas."

That or gas fumes. I had my cap assembly off for a couple weeks while I painted my bike and when I put it back together, I couldn't get the @#%*&! thing to work again. After an hour back on the bike with gas in the tank, it worked fine again. I went to the trouble to order a new one (it's called a splash guard btw) and never used it.
