So, my '08 started acting weird, see subject line. It was acting like maybe the battery had a bad cell. Push starter button, starter hits, then - nothing.

Tested the (NOCO Lithium - 7 months old) battery, and it was fine. I figured it must be the starter - the starter button and relay sounded like they were working.

Bought a new starter from Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007MS29GQ?psc=1&ref=ppx _yo2ov_dt_b_product_details and installed it last night.

To my dismay, the problem remained! So, I swapped the starter relay for one of the others, and the bike started immediately!

All I can figure is that the relay (which appears to work fine in the other location) was failing under load - it would engage momentarily, then fail. Repeatedly.

So, if you are experiencing the same behavior, check the relay first!

The good news is that the new starter (1.4kw) spins the engine much faster, with no 'grunt'. And, I found the transmission breather hose had been in contact with the rear exhaust pipe, and had a hole burned in in it.

And - I guess I have a 'good' spare starter!

I've got a crank no start situation on a car of mine. I was told to replace the main relay even though it tested good. I was told by a long time mechanic that sometimes the relay will click and test good but will not supply enough current to get the job done. Unfortunately it didn't work for me but glad you figured it out even though it was after the new starter. Mine's still dead!

That’s good advice.
The electrical system is usually the culprit, starter warranty during the one year (and later the two year) period on Evo Sportsters and Buells - was almost nonexistent.

It can be bad ground conductivity.

Also keep an eye on your Amazon starter, it may start leaking oil from primary case. I had overrun clutch issue with the stock starter and replaced the stock starter by a starter from Amazon and the starter from Amazon started leaking. So I ended up replacing the overrun clutch in the stock starter and installing it back.

The starter from Amazon had no seal in the housing and on the overrun clutch. The housing was poorly casted and had different internal design. This is basically Chinese knock off with a lot of design flaws and poor fabrication quality causing leakage.

Tpehak, I read about that in several places. I asked the vendor if their unit was sealed and they said it was.

Can't really tell from the box, but I get the impression it is from Eastern Europe.

Visual inspection - they looked identical. The only 'issue' was the solenoid-to-motor connection rubber boot. It was already dissolving, so I swapped the old OEM (I assume) boot onto the new starter.

I'm always watching for 'unintentional discharge'!
