Greetings, Anyone have a resource or solution for repair of the inner plastic rear fender on a 1998 S3T. Mine is cracked/disintegrating...the plastic weld products did not hold.... I've considered a short piece of 90 deg stainless/aluminum angle held in place by small stainless bolts/lockwashers.. Thoughts?!? Thanks! | ||

What part of the fender broke? If you're considering using angle, I'm assuming it's either along the bottom edge where it mounts, or along the straight part that covers the belt. I feel like some bolts through into angle is still going to keep all of the stress on a few small spots where the bolts are, and it'll just end up breaking there too. I think if you go that direction your best bet would be a good bit of epoxy between the fender and the angle, assuming the epoxy will stick well to the plastic fender. | ||

https://www.permabond.com/materials_bonded/abs-adh esive-how-to-bond-abs/ Read up on ABS glue. You can fix all motorcyce parts with it You will need to buy some acetone. Brush the acetone on the abs area that will get the glue. Its will clean and soften the abs and promote bonding. You can also grind up the abs sheet and make a slurry with the acetone if you need filler. For Rigid ABS I prefer this SCIGRIP 16 Acrylic Cement, Low-VOC, Medium bodied, 1 Pint Can with Screw-on Cap, Clear ABS and acrylic glue. Buy ABS sheet on ebay to make splints and reinforce the area. Ill use a heat gun to melt and shape them. Sometimes put some holes in them so the glue can breath. If you GOB on SCIgrip 16 and cover it up with abs sheet,the chemicals cant breath out and will melt the plastic a little in the sun.They can take 3 years to escape. What you will see is a sunken area where the crack is. Becareful here when paint is on the otherside or if its a high vis area. The good news is it wont break again. Platic welder is great stuff for small stationary things out of the weather. Its expensive and doesnt work well at all on ABS. Best to keep the SCI16 around for ALL plastic and ABS repairs. Thanks for the reply... Tried "Plastic Surgery" the adhesive, and have some JB Weld on standby to try... I figure too many schmoo's (glues) will conflict with one another. I've also considered trying the angle on the back side for cosmetics....60,000+ miles and counting.... Thanks Again... | ||

These ABS and Acrylic glues are 100 times better than those household glues. Waveguides, Whereabouts you at in NC? I'm presuming somewhere near Wilmington, based on the dealership reference in your profile. I thought I knew all the Bueller's in NC... But back on topic, I've got a handful of '98 S3/S3-T rear inner fenders that I hope to make one useable part out of. Al of mine are fiberglass. Are you sure yours is plastic? Can you post (or Email me) pics? I was told by some that they did exist in plastic, but then others have told me that they were all fiberglass. Good luck and I hope to learn from your experience! |
